New to the forum and new to watch collecting

    Hi all,

Newbie here, just thought I'd introduce myself.

Despite wearing watches for over 30 years I have never really been 'in to them', they have just been a tool to tell the time and when one breaks i'd just get a new one.

This has recently changed, I decided to get a decent watch and impulse purchased a Rotary Aquaspeed. It was okay (ish), I felt a bit duped by the est Switzerland rather than Swiss made, but then again that prompted me to do a bit of research on watches and brands and stumbled upon this and other watch enthusiast forums.

My god.............. there are some fantastic watches owned by people! Anyway, aside from the beaters and one decentish watch my wife bought me 17 years ago (Adidas Adventure), this is my most recent purchase, received 10 mins ago (luckily there is a watch repair shop 20 seconds away from the office and they could adjust the strap for me)

A Steinhart OVM, apologies for the poor photography, it was taken on my phone.

My firt automatic and I'm sure my first of many!

That watch is a real looker, if it is a ceramic insert, its a new one to me.

[heads off to find out more info] :D

Yes it's a ceramic bezel insert available I'm told from Steinhart for EUR30, I didn't do it, the person I bought it from did it but included the original bezel insert and a nice leather strap for £260.

All in all I'm very very happy!

The wife might not be when she finds out what I've got my eyes on!

Great watch, had one myself and as always, a well used phrase on here, "regret letting it go"

Welcome sir, I hope you've got deep pockets. The single best watch forum in the world IMO.

Enjoy the ride and excellent choice in the Steinhart, they really are an immense amount of watch for the money.

Certainly not a bad watch for your first Auto.. a lot of lump for the money.
The ceramic insert option is news to me too, good to know.

    Oh, and welcome !

If you have the spare insert.. I wonder.. any chance you can measure the outside & inside diameter? (with calipers if you have 'em) !! Might as well get you into doing this sort of thing.. from now on you'll be measuring watch lugs, bracelets, cases etc etc!! :thumbleft:

You are welcome to the spare insert if you want it, I'm not so much a tinkerer and would hate to damage it with my inexperienced hands I'm happy with the ceramic bezel insert and would never change it over, chances are the spare would just get damaged or lost anyway so I'd be pleased that someone else would get the benefit

That's very kind of you, but I don't need one (just yet), and it may be the wrong size. I ask, as I am thinking of a custom project, and I'm trying to locate a certain size insert.

    Welcome!

My advice is to not get carried away in a flush of enthusiasm and end up buying too much.

Plenty of advice available on this forum, don`t be afraid to ask for help. There's a lot of humour and banter too, but lots of expertise when you need it.

    Good advice Paul,

I am already carried away, the only thing holding me back is explaining it to the wife when she asks "what are these transactions all about?"

I've set myself what I would consider to be a reasonably acceptable acquisition list over the next 12 months.

I'd like a CWC G10, I had one years ago but smashed it on a caving expedition and it had a load of water ingress so I binned it.
Heard good things about a Broadarrow too, not sure if that was issued, it certainly wasn't when I was in, but I hear guys get on with it quite well.
A seiko 5 because it seems silly not having one for the price they are, also some very nice looking Seiko divers - I think I'm a bit spoiled for choice with this brand
    A Zodiac Seadragon I think they're called
And finally a GMT auto, not sure what brand but I know it won't be anything 'top end', something in the region of £300 would suit me.

As I'm writing that list I find it keeps growing :-)

Hopefully for my 40th next year the wife will treat me to a Seamaster...............

You just don't listen, do you? :D

Take a break and enjoy the Steinhart. It's probably a lot better than you can appreciate at the moment. Learn a little more and make the next acquisition worth while.

Can't fault you wanting a SMP, my first "real" watch, and wearing it as I type this, and as for the GMT auto, lots of choice out there, but the for the budget if you can stretch it a little  I'd go for the Steinhart Ocean One GMT 8)

    Enjoy your stay :)

I like the Steinhart GMT, in fact I've fallen in love with the brand, but I'd like to try a different brand, the £300 budget does have a bit of flex in it for the right brand but not sure what options I have, my only stipulation is that I have quality.

My knowledge on the subject is miniscule so all suggestions would be gratefully received.

Man.................. I freaking love this forum!!

If that is the case, then can't go wrong with the PRS22 GMT from our gracious host 8)

Welcome aboard, the Steinhart is a great way to start.

I've got one on the way too, allegedly, I think it's got lost somewhere between the Jura region and Gunters place :?

Unfortunately I didn't have calipers so measured with a ruler, the internal diameter is 31mm & external is 38mm

Edit* I found some calipers in my shed last night and can confirm that these are the internal and external diameter measurements!
