Meteor Shower - one thousand injured

Crikey! As far as I am aware, this is pretty much unprecendented. Until now, actual damage from a meteorite fall has been almost non-existent. I think a car was hit in a driveway some years ago, and I seem to recall a dog or a small domestic animal was killed by one a long time back.

I actually collect a few meteorites, I suspect there will be a few of these Russian ones hitting the market pretty soon.

The first years after the cold war Russia seemed like all misery and utterly boring. But nowadays it must be the place to be if you want action. Not a dull second, it seems. In this case rather unpleasant action, but action nevertheless!

I've just amended the thread title as the injury rate is rising fast.

    Astonishing stuff.

According to eyewitnesses in video it is not clear whether it was meteor that fell in Russia. They called it what the F*, F*, F* me, oh my F*.

Check out the coverage on Russia Today (Sky 512 or 518), they're showing loads of footage, apparently it's taken out Russia's largest zinc plant! They've yet to find a piece of the meteorite yet but I'm sure it'll hit eBay just as soon as they do

Didn't we have an "end of the world" thread a month ago? I was very, VERY disappointed waking up the morning after. But OK, I agree to give it a go! Last time I wore a Seiko 6105 to honour the "Apocalyptic" event, but since it's a meteor this time I'll go for something that can take the impact ... i.e a sapphire crystal. I think I'll get my PO.

I was looking at the videos on reddit earlier. Shockwave apparently broke windows which is what caused majority of injuries apparently. Scary stuff. Wonder if its linked to the near miss mentioned earlier in thread.

I'm not normally one for conspiracy theories, but why is there a Geordie in Russia?

Tonight's meteor should be amazing. I almost regret arranging to visit Scotlands Secret Bunker this very evening.

A couple of months ago some space debris fell near to where I live. It was very low, travelling at speed and on fire, At first I thought it was an aeroplane as I live quite near an airport-never seen anything like it!

Makes you realise how powerful nature is and how insignificant we are.
Awesome and I don't doubt not a little scary on the ground.

Obviously the fact that so many have been injured is horrendous, but as a spectacle to watch that really is quite incredible! Must've been terrifying at the time though!

Hope the injuries sustained aren't serious.

BBC says 500 injured but this is a very very close run thing.

The clever people on the 6th floor (some of you know where I work) estimate it would have been travelling at about mach 30. The area has some population centres and although a large amount of the object would have burned up on entry (it seems to have shattered in the upper atmosphere causing multiple "contrails") it still would have vaporised whatever it hit.

There's a "Hammer of God" size asteroid passing very close by today- I'll be hoping all the calculations are correct.

Imagine you saw that over your town: when I first saw it on the news, I thought, why wouldnt you think that was an incoming warhead, especially with the flash, and daily life was over...

I wonder what registered on military radars?

I was thinking the same thing, it's a good job this didn't happen at the height of the cold war!
