Review of the most bonkers Omega ever made, "The Grand"

Well this watch was definitely an experience to photograph and research.

Nah, I think the Ploprof is the most bonkers Omega ever. Mind you, the new Ultra Deep will probably take on that accolade. I got the opportunity to handle a Le Grand many years ago. It was all original, including the bracelet, and not nearly as large or cumbersome as you’d imagine.

Well this is a PloProf too. Just PloProf with depth rating of 1000 meters instead of 600 meters. And the actual diving capability wasn't even tested because "The Grand" was more watertight that the submarine (that was used in the test).

It was quite bonkers back in the 1970's.

Wow that’s a rare beast! The Grand was the pinnacle of divers watch manufacturing when it was made.
I look forward to reading your review later this evening.

The fellow member I met who owned The Grand had set out to find the best available example out there at the time and his patience certainly paid off. It was good to handle it. Would be great if Omega reissued it.

And thanks for this latest review and your recent Ploprof one too. I also enjoyed your Porsche review and I’m pretty much indifferent to cars.

You're welcome my friend. Glad you liked 'em.

Now that I'm already in the middle age I seem to gravitate more and more towards the classic models. Both watches and cars hehe.

I'd probably put the Flightmaster at the top of the bonkers Omega list.

They threw everything including the kitchen sink at the flightmaster (I have just wound and set my 910 ready for tomorrow) but The Grand was far superior in terms of performance to any other dive watch on the market at the time. Omega had bonkers covered in the late 60s early 70s

Omega had so many crazy cool models in the 60's and 70's. I find these vintage Omegas very fascinating.

I still have a Seamaster 300 review coming up. That's another masterpiece.

Hi , great review almost bought one of these recently but my concern was how easy or difficult it would be to service due to no case back . Acces to movement would mean full disassembly of bezel and removal of crystal . Would you know if these can still be serviced by Omega ?
    Many thanks

That was a great review, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Who would have thought that a case could be too watertight, so that the dial rotted !?

Please see this as a helpful comment, not a criticism, but where you have used the word "borrowed", it should be "lent". English must be a horrible language to learn, but you've done a great job; Many thanks.

    Thanks Gren. Changed that.

This is an example of those corroded dials with the "bubble effect".

I look forward to that, it’s one of my favourite watches
I made an attempt at a review/ comparison with a bubbly dial 7016 a couple of years ago.

Very nice. I love that Tudor Sub too.

I still remember in the early 2000's when Tudor Subs were selling for $1500.

    I wish I had a time machine.

    Here's another interesting PloProf-related link:

Yeah, that was a simply awesome piece of watchmaking. I'd love one of those.

I wouldn't place the flightmaster in the "bonkers" category... Whereas the 176.004 firmly sits in there

That's definitely bonkers. Gorgeous too though.

PloProf and Alaska Project probably tie for the bonkers appearance medal but it goes with the territory of having cases engineered to work in extreme conditions.

I found the Flightmaster a bit difficult to love (too easy to move things)

The Seamaster 120 176.004 is really beautiful though.

Ploprof 600 is a bit bonkers but amazing !

I wish I still had a PloProf 600 and Big Blue but my 911 Flightmaster and 1000M aren't going anywhere! Great big chunks of metal all.

Yes - Wish I had got a 1000m when I had the chance. Too expensive now :(
