Thread: Cover that is Superior to the Original

  1. #1

Cover that is Superior to the Original

I heard Joe Cocker cover of 'With a little help from my friends' after a long, long time today. I have to say that is a magnificent cover, and I am ashamed to say better than the The Beatles original, although the latter are the true geniuses for writing the song.

I thought it would make an interesting thread of covers you think are better sung than the original.

I’m ashamed to say this… but, here goes anyway.. Fleetwood Mac - Dreams. I prefer the cover by The Corrs.

Any random David Bowie cover is better than original. It's no that I don't like Bowie songs, but covers usually are better than his own versions.

    I'll se myself out :)

There's a thread in the 'All The Young Dudes' sub-forum entitled Your Favourite Cover Tunes

    It was started in 2005...

Probably a stupid question, but are out of interest, are you still 21.5km from Moscow?

Hurt by NIN , original is excellent of course but Johnny Cash’s version is legend.

    In a similar vein

I’m Your Man by Leonard Cohen , Elton John’s version is a whole different epic thing .

Its nice to hear Leonard perform but no one would say he’s a singer or musician . Probably a lot more covers of Cohen’s work you could point at there , Willie Nelson singing Bird on a Wire for example . Tower of Song ( an album of covers ) has lots of interesting covers not all succesful but all quite interesting.

Isn't the Zutons the original? Or have I misread your post?

Anyway I'd nominate Heard it through the grapevine by the slits.

Though the original is a superb as well

Excellent shout, saw them twice in the same week in 1976, at the Liverpool Empire then supporting The Who at Charlton. There is an old Whistle Test clip of this on YouTube. If you like Alex Harvey also see Next and the faith healer from 1973.

Ultimate cover for me is All along the watch tower by Jimi Hendrix. In fact when I saw Bob Dylan in 1996 (he was shit) he played the Hendrix version, not his own.

All along the watchtower, Jimi's version is far better than Bob's.

True for Iggy's version of China Girl, although it's not really a cover. Otherwise - no. And here's a case in point

I'm fond of the Earth Wind & Fire version of Got To Get You Into My Life. What I really like are cover versions that change the chords a bit to bring the jazz out of them, like this one.

Portishead did a cover of ABBA SOS.
Check it out on YouTube as it was never actually released. Really good spin on a classic :)

Can’t say I’m exactly a Lulu fan but her cover of The Man Who Sold The World is excellent.

On the Lulu theme, it's a close thing, two completely different treatments, but I prefer Them's "Here Comes the Night" to Lulu's.
As I said in the original thread.

Springsteen's Nightshift is massively better than the original - admittedly the original sounded very 80s synth-y and that's never much of a help

I'd also add Knocking on Heavens dioor by Guns and Roses......... in fact any cover version of any Dylan song done by anyone is a vast improvement on the original. He's a great songwriter, but his singing is dire

I started this self same thread in 2005 and it is still regularly posted on.

FWIW all the stuff mentioned on here has already been posted in the 10 pages.

    Gun - Word up (Cameo).

Big Mountain - Baby I love your way* (Peter Frampton)
*I think this could have been a good James Bond song actually.

I prefer Jeff Buckley Hallelujah to the OG Leonard Cohen version.

On the topic of Cohen, Lana Del Ray's cover of Chelsea Hotel No 2 is phenomenal.

Love The Fall and had this in mind along with There’s a Ghost in My House. In fact there are quite a few where Mark really makes them his own, Rollin’ Dany and Victoria also.

I don’t deny that Hendrix was talented, but he always left me cold. Apart from Watchtower, which really is magnificent.
