I’m ashamed to say this… but, here goes anyway.. Fleetwood Mac - Dreams. I prefer the cover by The Corrs.
I heard Joe Cocker cover of 'With a little help from my friends' after a long, long time today. I have to say that is a magnificent cover, and I am ashamed to say better than the The Beatles original, although the latter are the true geniuses for writing the song.
I thought it would make an interesting thread of covers you think are better sung than the original.

Any random David Bowie cover is better than original. It's no that I don't like Bowie songs, but covers usually are better than his own versions.
I'll se myself out :)
There's a thread in the 'All The Young Dudes' sub-forum entitled Your Favourite Cover Tunes
It was started in 2005...

Jim.
Hurt by NIN , original is excellent of course but Johnny Cash’s version is legend.
In a similar vein
I’m Your Man by Leonard Cohen , Elton John’s version is a whole different epic thing .
Its nice to hear Leonard perform but no one would say he’s a singer or musician . Probably a lot more covers of Cohen’s work you could point at there , Willie Nelson singing Bird on a Wire for example . Tower of Song ( an album of covers ) has lots of interesting covers not all succesful but all quite interesting.

Isn't the Zutons the original? Or have I misread your post?
Anyway I'd nominate Heard it through the grapevine by the slits.
Though the original is a superb as well
Delilah by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.
Guns n Roses version of Live and Let Die
George Michaels version of I can't make you love me
Elvis' version of Blue Suede Shoes

Excellent shout, saw them twice in the same week in 1976, at the Liverpool Empire then supporting The Who at Charlton. There is an old Whistle Test clip of this on YouTube. If you like Alex Harvey also see Next and the faith healer from 1973.
Ultimate cover for me is All along the watch tower by Jimi Hendrix. In fact when I saw Bob Dylan in 1996 (he was shit) he played the Hendrix version, not his own.

All along the watchtower, Jimi's version is far better than Bob's.

Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations
True for Iggy's version of China Girl, although it's not really a cover. Otherwise - no. And here's a case in point
I'm fond of the Earth Wind & Fire version of Got To Get You Into My Life. What I really like are cover versions that change the chords a bit to bring the jazz out of them, like this one.
I like the Nirvana cover of The Man Who Sold the World
Portishead did a cover of ABBA SOS.
Check it out on YouTube as it was never actually released. Really good spin on a classic :)

A few great ones above!
Easy, Faith no More originally by the Commodores
The Sound of Silence, Disturbed originally by Simon and Garfunkel
Smooth Criminal, Alien Ant Farm originally by Michael Jackson
I saw Elvis Costello cover Knowing Me Knowing You in Glastonbury 1987. Superb.
Personal Jesus - Jonny Cash
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpYW3qng78E
Joe Cocker - with a little help from my friends (originally the Beatles)
Hallelujah - Andrea Burke (originally Leonard Cohen)
Twist and Shout - Beatles (originally Isley Brothers)
I will always love you -Whitney Houston (originally Dolly Parton)
Nothing compares 2 you - Sinead O Connor (originally Prince)
On the Lulu theme, it's a close thing, two completely different treatments, but I prefer Them's "Here Comes the Night" to Lulu's.
As I said in the original thread.
Springsteen's Nightshift is massively better than the original - admittedly the original sounded very 80s synth-y and that's never much of a help

I think we've had this thread a number of times (or maybe on other forums I waste the working day on) but I will nominate Walk On By by The Stranglers.
Not necessarily better than the original but I like them.
The Damned - Help
The Fall - Lost In Music
LCD Sound System - No Love Lost
And pretty much everything by Nouvelle Vague
Gun - Word up (Cameo).
Black Crowes - Too hard to handle (Otis Redding)
Big Mountain - Baby I love your way* (Peter Frampton)
*I think this could have been a good James Bond song actually.
I was going to say exactly that. Also see:
Maggies Farm - RATM
Subterranean Homesick Blues - Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Blowing in the Wind - Sam Cooke
Wanted Man - Nick Cave
One more cup of coffee - White Stripes
It Ain't me babe - Johnny Cash
Mr Tambourine Man - The Byrds
And many, many more!
Blows Candi Staton out the water IMO.
I prefer Jeff Buckley Hallelujah to the OG Leonard Cohen version.
On the topic of Cohen, Lana Del Ray's cover of Chelsea Hotel No 2 is phenomenal.
Whiskey in a Jar & Turn the Page - Metallica
Hounds of love - Futureheads
https://youtu.be/-jEUq3hEjus
Great version by 2 legends.
Back to the thread......
Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon - Urge Overkill.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.
Sweet Child of Mine - I prefer the Sheryl Crow cover to the Guns n Roses original

See also the live at Monterey version and the Monterey feedback intro to Wild Thing which is like a discordant Vulcan bomber engine.
Dont forget Red House while you are searching.
