Linn pre amps

Any Linn experts? I’m looking for a hopefully not too expensive used Linn pre amp with phono stage, to make my set up fully Linn. I’m currently using a Rotel pre amp but looking at the used Linn options is very confusing, what would fit best with a Basik/ Akito turntable, Pioneer Pd-s 505 precision cd player, LK 85 power amp and a pair of Ninka speakers? Thinking old Majik? Is the remote replaceable if so seeing a lot used with no remote. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Let me know if you do get one without a remote. I am currently abroad but back on the 27th and I may have a spare remote at home which I can pop in the post to you for free.

Linn Kairn or Wakonda are the obvious choices, but it depends on your definition of "not too expensive" :lemo:

I’m am a Yorkshireman the cheaper the better!

register a search on Facebook marketplace for Linn and also on UK Hifi sales group.

You can of course set the search radius to whatever you want.

I got a great pair of Keilidhs that way.

Get yourself on eBay and search for 'used Matsui'.

If none available, Amstrad used to make some fine budget pieces.....

Tread very warily buying Linn-anything from the last 20 years or so - at some point they changed from linear PSUs to switchmode. Great for efficiency, but many of them have proven unreliable, and not infrequently die irreparably. The older ones can neither be repaired nor replaced since Linn don't keep stock of spares for the older designs. Even when you can get spares, Linn are notoriously expensive.

You'd do well to do plenty of research on hifi forums like Pink Fish to get a clearer idea of which models it would be wiser to avoid.

I am from the era when every 17 year old wanted a set of Matsui 'shoe box' speakers fitted to the parcel shelf of their Ford Escort/Fiesta as soon as they passed their driving test (closely followed by a set of crappy spotlights/fog lights fitted to the front somewhere). And every Currys was rammed full with dreadful cheap 'hifi's' with flashing light graphic equalisers.

Its funny how things change though, as I think I was around 20 YO when I first discovered a Rosewood Linn LP12.
Matsui/Amstrad etc never quite seemed the same after that.

Even now my inner teenager really loves watching massive graphic equaliser display, or even the bouncing meters on the old Rank Audio tuner amp my parents had back then

Remember reading Alan made the speakers half the size to fit more in a box / container. Brilliant for selling crap.
