Home Insurance that Covers Watches

Hi Guys, can anyone recommend an insurance company that is watch friendly.

I've been with M&S Home insurance for years who re-brand AXA insurance, however I've just spoken to them and they have a limit of 10k per single item and I have just bought a watch that is worth more than that.

I asked them if they'd cover it and they said no and also that they would be canceling my insurance in 21 days as they either have to cover everything or not at all, I said i'd make alternative arrangements just for the watch but they still insisted they had to cancel my policy, thanks for that then !

So can anyone recommend a company that is a bit more watch friendly ! I appreciate they will probably charge me a bit extra just to cover the watch which I'm expecting

Had a similar xperience with M&S after we added two extra rooms via an extension. Moved to Liverpool and Victoria and are now with Aviva (you have to go online and get a number once you exceed the regular insurance limits).

Direct Line covers all single items up to £4000 automatically. I added my wife's engagement ring as a high value item so I can't see they'd have a problem with a watch of that value.

M&S cover any single item up to £10000.00 but the watch is worth more than that hence the problem

I've been in the same position this week. I ended up cancelling my current contents insurance and taking out a new policy with Hiscox Insurance. They have specific cover for watches and jewellery above the limits you are looking for and seemed reasonably priced. Also includes unlimited contents cover for other stuff in your house and cover for art works etc separately.

You'll also need a safe to store watches when not being worn.

I do already have a safe thankfully. I'll give them a try, Thanks for the advice JP

I think the previous poster's point was that the automatic limit is £4K, but you can add on specific higher value items, such as your +£10k watch, as he did with the ring. That's how I read it anyway.

Thanks but the replacement cost is higher than 15k

Insure it seperately and give the company copies of those docs should resolve your issue if you have many watches perhaps a commercial policy may be better saying you buy and sell watches get an upper limit on total costs like car dealers with cost of stock !

Another vote for Hiscox. No need to name any individual item or pair of items below £15k. Anything above that needs to be specified, from what I remember it was pretty painless to do.

NFU mutual is allegedly very good. I use them but never tested them, if this makes sense. I do not know what their individual item value limit is, though

John Lewis Specialist home insurance, for the last 4 years
They will cover multiple times the value of which you quoted.

I use Hastings. My premium covers all of my watches including my AP RO and there was no increase when I added my BLNR last year. Premium is <£200 so not bad really.

I've never had to make a claim but I find Aviva to be quite sensible. Anything over £2K needs to be added as a specified item, I just call them up, tell them what I've bought, most recently the BLNR, which after I told them if I had to make a claim it's likely to have been subject to a price increase and we agreed to insure it for just over £7K even though the retail was just short of £6K. As there was only a few weeks until policy renewal it got added for free for the remainder and cost around a tenner for next year.

You fellas are great. Just got a quote for M & S Premier and even after a £31.76 cancellation fee with my old insurer (Aviva), I just saved almost £200!

Ha This has gone full circle, I was with M&S and they wouldn't cover my watch as it's over their limit.

I very much doubt that, I just have one recently acquired watch they won't cover, being the dearest it's the only one I really do want covered. Hence having to find a company that will cover it. Hiscox are looking like the winners so thanks everyone for the recommendations.

Agreed, we have been with them for 4 yrs and renewed again today after trawling the comparison sites and making a few calls. Each company defines valuables differently and has differing rules as you would expect. JL count audio equipment under regular contents so that was a big win for me. Premium was very reasonable too.

Hope I never have to deal with their claims department now :smug:

They're superb IMO. Changes are easily managed and they have a fantastic reputation with regard to claims.

I'm insured building and contents with Aviva and find them reasonable and anything over circa £1,500 needs to be specified and with an Omega Seamaster and engagement ring it was an additional £30 per annum. Also I had 3 months remaining when added and they did it for free before my renewal was due!

If you'd done it through quidco you get £25 cash back........it was £40 when I did mine in January....

Same with car insurance, just got £35 quid back from direct line on a £200 quid motor policy.....it all adds up..
