What to use as fat absorber on BBQ

Hi
I know there are few BBQ experts on here so hoping someone can help. Recently bought a gas BBQ which has a removal fat tray. The manual and some of the videos I've seen on-line talk about putting some fat absorption granules or other material into the tray.

All I've managed to find is things like tray liners which isn't what I was after. The stuff I was after looks like cat litter and can be left in there most of the season and is changed periodically, have also heard of sand been used. Is there anything that people have used, could recommend etc?

I have always lined the tray with kitchen foil and then a layer of kiln dried sand. Works fine. Then scrunch up the whole lot when a change is needed and replace.

I tried that but the turds whiffed a bit when they got hot.

I find a few slices of bread absorb the fat nicely. Bit like roasting beef and dipping in the dripping. Sorry, but I love BBQ fat. Not every day mind.

Another for the foil & sand.

Some bbqs seem to drop a lot of fat, the newer Weber spirit seemingly a prime candidate, my 12yr old one barely gets any fat into the tray.

The new spirit is the only thing I’ve ever cooked on where I’ve had 2 fat fires from the drip tray. Not my bbq both times as was grilling at 2 different friends houses.

Cat litter is an interesting idea though.

Always used sand too
