My thoughts on the genius of choosing an English classic built by the famously motivated skilled artisans of the 1970s may be found here
I'm looking forward to some nostalgia here!
Me in 2000 with our first car in Qatar - ex-police Landrover Disco, V8, manual box. Great fun. Until it wasn't.

Then a little earlier? 1998? My wife's 320i. Straight six engine was a peach. I loved its slack, loose nature.

^^^ I'm also looking forward to some more motoring nostalgia, I very much enjoyed this post:

It's been 5 years since I sold it, but there are still times when I miss my Noble P4 replica. :apologetic:

Sometime in the late 80s, in Wales with my Caterham 1600 Crossflow, twin Weber’s sticking out the hole in the side of the bonnet!
Loved it - however I could actually get more luggage on my motorcycle than I could in the boot of the Caterham!
It’s long gone, as is the moustache, and most of the hair... only thing still with me is the Sub 16800 on my wrist!

In roughly chronological order. Missing a Mercedes CLK & a VW Polo, maybe others, because I can't find any photos
My grandmother's car which I inherited on my grandad's death in 1985.
1955 Series II Morris Minor. My dad failed his first driving test in this. Won't ever get rid of this one.

Mercedes SL500....lovely but made me too anxious to own because my son had a tendency to wash cars
using half a brick rather than a sponge. Also, as the speedometer needle rose, the fuel guage went in the
opposite direction. Had 17K on the clock when I sold it. Regret selling :-(

From the SL500 to the Nissan Micra. First time my son saw this he called it the 'Monkey car'. I can see his point.

Skoda Octavia Scout Estate

Skoda Kodiaq...worst car I've ever owned. I felt that the car was driving me rather than me driving it. For example
slamming the brakes on because it thinks I'm about to hit the car in front, doing the same when I go around a left hand bend,
radar picks up a wall or a hedge & presumably thinks I'm going to go off at a tangent, usually with no car in front. Parktronic
being set off by its own exhaust fumes. Never went out in it without calling it a 'stupid car' at some point. Decided that I needed
something retro which did what I told it & didn't have alarms going off all the time.

Hence....Land Rover Defender from the last year of production. 7800 miles on the clock. Planning on keeping this for some time.
Brings a smile to my face on every outing.

Great idea. Not sure I have many pictures of my cars from back in the day though.
I've had quite a few cars over the years, all were the usual family-orientated fare but when the time came for us to have two cars, I bought my first Land Rover, a 90. Flat as the proverbial but had some great days out in it. Then a newer one, in Rioja red metallic came along. Had it for 16 years and it was incredibly reliable. I only changed it when the dreaded chassis rot took hold and it was cheaper to buy one which already had a galv chassis conversion. I still miss it and kid myself that when I win the Lotto, I'll get it fully restored. That's Mrs Sish in the hat, in case anyone was wondering...

Good grief, a Rover Vitesse, what happened to all of them? I had a "C" reg silver one, had a rudimentary trip computer, worst MPG away from lights a bit sharpish was .5, best was backing off after coming off the Orwell bridge from 140mph + at 199! Cheers, John B4
Seems shallow reminiscing about overindulgent past 'motoring' loves is not to everyones taste on a watch forum and hence I have removed content to prevent any further offence to a fellow member..
Don’t let a lone voice put you off. The chances of me ever owning a Lamborghini or Aston are slim, but I still love looking at them and hearing people’s experiences of them. It’s what car enthusiasts do.
I’m even less likely to ever own a mil sub but that doesn’t stop me enjoying Mike Wood’s company!
Wait until Nicky discovers what some folk spend on a watch!
One of the many I should not have sold - 1968 Lotus 7 series 3 with 1700cc all steel BDA engine - what a noise!

Please put the pictures back up, I didn’t get to see them whilst they were visible.
Like others here, I would never be comfortable spending the sort of money cars like that cost, but I’m glad other people are. If it weren’t for the people prepared to spend the money, these cars wouldn’t exist for the rest of us to enjoy looking at.
Fabulous! My Caterham was an ex-hillclimb car, with a 1.6l Kent crossflow, built by Oselli. I really enjoyed that car, and used to take it to work occasionally, a 40-mile round trip involving some fantastic A and B roads in the Meon Valley. I'll try and find some photos.
Very capable cars!

Was it an Anniversary?
I can still remember the QV engine figures from Fast Lane - 455 and 369.
My lovely 883, bought new July 1987, took it in for its first service a fortnight later after a nice little tour, and written off August bank holiday 1987 by a nice lady in an Astra who wanted to use my bit of road. One of the two vehicles I would be unable to choose between if I could only have one of my many past loves back.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e3a5dac14e.jpg

lovely to see a couple of Karmann Ghia featuring here. I sold mine just 5 days ago! (Also a 69 LHD).

The X1/9 was also mine. It had a tuned engine with twin 40s, camshaft and exhaust IIRC.

I've posted this picture previously and it strikes me that I have very few pictures of my cars over the years. This is my TVR Griffith 500 and the picture was taken around 1995 of my then girlfriend (sadly no longer with us) as we descended a private road to Campbells Cottage near Plockton that we'd rented for a week.

A few of my oldies starting with my Kawasaki Z250 in 1982...
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a8beb3b2_h.jpg
After getting my car licence I paid £600 for a MK1 Cavalier 1.6L which was shortly followed by a Capri 2.0S which I bought from my brother..
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a9ff4014_h.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...cbf62aed_h.jpg
I then got a company car with my job so enter a Ford Escort 1.6LX with a Motorola car phone fitted...back in 1989 I think this would have been...
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ce34755c_h.jpg
I'd had the bug for fast(ish) Peugeot's so in 1991 and having been made redundant (I bought the Escort off the bank I worked for) I traded it in for probably the best car I've owned...a 309GTi 3 door...
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1fff4ea3_h.jpg
I then added a 205 1.6 GTi for my wife...no power steering so she stuggled to park it but boy what a cracking drive...
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...36a77550_h.jpg
I then had a 306 S16 (really slow) and a 306 GTi with a 6 speed gear box, plus a 106 GTI for my wife...

After the 106GTi I went German with VW Golf's BMW's & a couple of Porsche's too...currently happy with a 2006 BMW 535d Touring and a VW Up! ... guess that's old age for you :-)
Ahh I am a bit of a secret petrolhead. LOVE some of the cars in this thread.
I only have early years photos of my third car which was a 56 Oval beetle running a 1955CC w/ dual Weber 44s and straight cut gears.
It was like a damned rocket :excitement:
Last pic was when it was unmolested in Sweden.

I always wanted a Karmann ghia.
First car I actually bought - probably 1997 - a
1990 XR3i with the Cossy alloys and the rs turbo spoiler. Was a minter when I bought it - about 30k miles.
Think I paid £4k for it. Loved it. Could not afford to fuel it tho! Was only warning about £200 a week!

What a great thread.
@Steve - love the S16. Quite rare IIRC.
@C - love the alloys and the family resemblance to the 356 is clear. Fantastic.
