It might have changed now, but international post was always covered off by a ‘you deliver ours and we’ll deliver yours’ type agreement, at least between nations with recognisable postal systems. There’d be an occasional reconciliation, but not sure if any money actually changed hands.
The attributable costs to Royal Mail used to be quite low, as they were going past every delivery point 6 days a week anyway.
With the huge increase in parcels and larger packets since everybody went online to buy things, the economies have probably shifted due to the space and carriage requirements.
