Thread: I'm feeling really disappointed in myself.....

I'm feeling really disappointed in myself.....

I always liked watches but never really had any appetite to spend more than a couple of hundred on one. I often admired expensive watches but always thought people were crazy spending such vast sums of money on a single watch or even several of them.

Something changed late last year, i caught the obsession and have become quite ill. I have amassed a collection of 11 watches ranging in price from £300 - £6000 and developed a real interest in everything to do with horology. It's a hobby that has taken over all other hobbies and I love it.

I started to have a think about the watches I was wearing at my major life events (inspired by another thread on here) including my wedding, graduation, birth of my kid, purchase of my house etc. I even had to dig some old photos out to remind myself and the results were sickening and very disappointing!!

    Graduation - A Sekonda!!!
    Wedding - A replica Breiting - A fake, noooooooooooo
Birth of daughter - I can't even say it. it hurts - A £15 Gul?!?!?
House purchase - Unknown - probably for the best

On the plus side, things can only get better!!! Maybe I can Photoshop some of those photos :-)

Still got the replica Breitling - oh dear!

Well, Im glad you are on the mend, to be honest that isn't even a replica Breitling, Im not sure what I would call it, its a 'thing' with the word Breitling on the dial However, it was your wedding watch so in its way, special.

Indeed, it's so horrible it's unfair to even call it a fake

Still as said, it has a value to you.

Agreed it has some sentimental value and to be fair it actually keeps good time but wow it is horrific to look at. I remember buying it from a tourist shop in whilst on holiday with the family on Majorca and paying €55 and actually feeling quite pleased with myself - young and stupid!

That thing in the first post is dreadful!
The zenith/speedie are beauties though, wear them in good health and get some more pics of the collection up!

Thanks jhw, they are definitely my favorites. These two are my latest additions:

I'm starting to like some of the Eterna and Christopher Ward stuff a lot.

Does anyone know what movements they would put into something like this? I assume it's a cheap Chinese unit, but a colleague suggested it was likely to be a Seiko movement? I'm just interested how much it would cost to put one of these together in order to justify selling them for €40-€60 a pop

+1 for the Zenith - it's a beauty. That's about the worst pic I've seen of an 11/45 though - sort it out!!! 😱

Let's hope one day you won't break the bank buying expensive watches and won't start regretting developing your current hobby

Your nice and ripe to get sucked into the vintage world, start appreciating creamy lume and tropical dials and it's all downhill from there

I have to chime in here.

What I love about this post is that I suspect the OP was going about to get a lot of blind stick about the fake and then he exhibited some very fine timepieces that would make most of us more than envious.

    Well done OP !

Love that Zenith. As my lifelong journey in timepieces continues I just keep coming back to Zenith as a cool brand.

You are right about Zenith, fast becoming one of my favorite brands!

It's amazing how you can go from a passing and admiring interest in watches to becoming quite consumed by it in a very short period of time. It's like discovering a whole new world with so much history and information and an endless amount of both vintage and modern watches. I have found it quite hard to control myself initially, but have now reached a point where I have a nice variety of watches and my purchases are becoming more controlled and thought out rather than purely emotional and impulse although that might have something to do with the fact that I have no money left!!!

The fake Breitling in my possession is a good reminder of where I have come from although I still cringe when I see me wearing it in my wedding photos.....
