    The affordable tourbillon

Finally bought a Sea-gull tourbillon. It's mesmerizing! It's +10 on the timegrapher so not too bad. I got a 9105 to +1 from -15 the other day, but I think I'll leave this be, just in case.

    Going through my perlon phase.

You can see why I use the word mesmerizing here.

I had one of these (the retrograde version) and agree that a tourbillon is something very special. I could just sit and watch that thing go round and round.

What put me off was that the watch and its strap had a very strange chemical smell, so I sold it again.

Wonderful value and that isn't bad at all timekeeping-wise - I certainly wouldn't touch it as I think you're very lucky to be that accurate as it is!

Is this the tourbillon movement Roland Kemmner modifies?

Here's one that caught my eye last month. Equivalent of about £1,500 IIRC. Was very tempted, but I then wondered how to get it serviced/repaired.....

Getting a new one every 5 years would be more cost-efficient than servicing it

That's what puts me off getting one.

Yes, it's a real shame. I saw another one with a porcelain dial that I really liked as well and I would love to give some of these a go. Lack of support network means no, though.

I read a review of the Seagull a while ago in which the reviewer said that a lot of movements were rejected as they are complicated to build. He thought that these movements went to other watchmakers, so perhaps Kemmner buys these in to modify and rebuild.

Some of the rejects end up as cufflinks too.

Servicing was my concern, so I bought it from Jun @ good-stuffs. I have a number of Sea-gulls from him and trust him to put things right. The watch has a 3-year warranty, although I haven't had a problem with any of my other Sea-gulls.

Good to know, thanks. I'll take a look.

In case anybody is looking at perlons. The lug of the tourbillon is 21mm with perlons coming in even sizes. I tried 20mm from EULIT and Rios but they didn't stretch to cover the bars, so it's on a 20mm from Watchbandit. The Watchbandit one is thicker than the others and covers the bars. I have some perlons arriving from Cheapestnato straps so will see how they go.
