Mmmm - I thought it was 'obscure harmonies'?
It might offend your ears, but not a lot of peoples', so that is a subjective statement.
She might be 'out of tune' - I'm not sure what you really mean by that, but again, I'm not sure it matters if people like what she does.
In terms of popular music, from what I've now understood, I don't think technical ability is that important. You'll either appeal or you won't. Delivery, charisma and performance all play a greater part in deciding if you enjoy a singer or not. Sometimes even the most discordant notes appeal to something in you.
Maybe we need another couple of threads "People who can't sing, but you really like" and "People who are great singers, but set your teeth on edge"...?

And as you raised The Human League, what about 'Backing singers who not only can't dance, but haven't even the slightest glimmer of a sense of rhythm.'
I was reminded of this in the Ali Gee/Beckams interview (talking about Brooklyn Beckham...)
Ali: So tell me, do you want him to grow up to be a footballer like his
dad, or a singer - like Mariah Carey?
V: Yeah, I'd like him to grow up to be a footballer like his dad, and I'd
like to grow up to be a singer like Mariah Carey!
I'm surprised that there has been no mention of Bono yet.
Most of the answers on here seem to be about whose voice you don't like, not who can and can't sing.
You might not like Adele, but she's got an amazing voice. You might not like Rod Stewart, but what a singer. Tom Jones? Not my thing but clearly a great vocal talent.
You might as well say Pavarotti had a 5hit voice purely because you don't like opera
I agree about Ian Brown live though, especially with the Roses. Saw them about five times and only once he didn't make my ears bleed. Still love the old King Monkey though
What I can't stand are singers who appear to affect a weird accent or trait when they sing. The worst offender must be Ellie Goulding with that 'baby' voice she does - she actually has a good range (without sounding a prat music teachers always said I have perfect pitch) - but there's something fake about her delivery. Listen to people like Iggy azelea doing her 'merican gangsta twaddle, I find it really off-putting. There are plenty of singers whose style I don't like, but it doesnt mean they can't sing!?
I think the epitome of 'Can't sing for toffee' is W Axl Rose. Adequate for a few years & then lost it. More howler monkey than singer these days.
(A friend of mine claims to have met a chap who sang 'behind the curtain' for Axl in the late 1980s. Anecdotal, nothing more.)

Not conforming to the tuning system (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musica...Tuning_systems) that I am culturally familiar with. That said I'm not culturally familiar with the Chinese tuning system but I'd rather listen to Chinese music than FatM
I'll try and find time to read that, but your final point is really more relevant.
No-one says you have to like anything, any more than I have to share your dislike.
Personally, I rather like her 'tunelessness' and clearly I'm not alone (although I'm a bit of a voice in the wilderness here!).
Maybe my cultural upbringing has aligned me with a different tuning system

I am surprised no one has mentioned Britney Spears, not that I listen to her
Apart from her my list includes (in no particluar order)
One Direction
Natasha Beddingfield
Kanye West
Spice Girls
Liam Gallaghers voice is absolutely ruined these days as well. He certainly could sing back in the earlier days of Oasis, or at least had some range.. not any more.
I think it comes down to whether you are singing your own music.
I don't expect all singer/songwriters to have perfect voices.
I love to hear Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joe Strummer et al. Distinctive voices but certainly not perfect. They are simply emoting their own lyrics.
If on the other hand somebody sets themself up as a singer, they had better be able to sing.
Cheers,
Neil.
Shaun Ryder.....End
Paul McCartney's voice has gone now. Same for old Elton John.
Tom Jones now sounds like a pastiche of himself.
Jimmy Nail singing & acting.
Having just heard her on the radio - Pink
She isn't bad singing live.. I was in a show in Soho last night in a scene with Madonna, i executed her by lethal injection (and her son by guy ritchie), her last words as she looked at me were "i love you" and afterwards in the bar she sang "It's raining men" on a karaoke in a bar, no miming at all :D ...
Such a surreal night, i'm still pinching myself :D
Was thinking the same thing. Slightly confused. Perhaps Adele isn't in the same ballpark as Montserrat Caballe, but come on, Adele has a cracking voice.
If you're looking for those who are vocally challenged, then Ellie Goulding, Victoria Beckham, Jedward, etc all fit the bill. And Morrisey. And Kanye West.
I agree with this. Most of my favourites 'can't sing'.... Van Morrison, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Dylan, Morrissey, Geddy Lee, Brian Johnson, etc... Doesn't spoil the enjoyment.
Joni Mitchell, Rufus Wainwright and others are acquired tastes that took me a while to get used to - but well worth it.

Always thought Simon LeBon was rubbish.
Disagree with Katy Perry and Elle Goulding though.

Can't believe whether Maria Carey can sing or not was actually debated! :D
Oasis, sounded like cats wailing, and Sting, useless without his backing group - how did he make his millions ??
This is a weird one. Plenty of multi-platinum selling singers out there who aren't opera-standard or technically perfect who are nevertheless wonderful to hear. Tom Waits, for example - monumentally creative in his use of the human voice as an instrument; or Nick Cave, able to flit between sonorous plainsong to feather-spitting, raucous rage inside half a bar. Neither is "conventionally vocally beautiful", but by god they can sing.
There are plenty of others whose voices I don't like who are intensely musically creative (Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen). And relatively few who're genuinely unable to carry a tune in a bucket. That Jordan video was just... Painful!
I do dislike autotune though - it sounds weirdly "clipped" to me and if there's anything the examples above demonstrate, it's that autotune is unnecessary for musical impact. I don't like Michael Bublé's voice, purely because it sounds (so far as I know, unfairly) autotuned to me...
Rare Joe Meek recording discovered:
Chairman of the Joe Meek Society, Rob Bradford, said the clip was "indeed rare" and probably dated to about 1962 or 1963.
"It's quite a tuneful one compared to some of the other demo tapes I've heard," he added.
Adele, Tom Jones, Sting, Katy Perry, Michael Buble, CeeLo Green ...... are all names that have amazed me by appearing in this thread!
Not saying I like all their music by any means, in fact Sting is the only one whose albums I have bought, but I'm really surprised that people think they can't sing. It must be a very subjective thing.
Nicki Minaj - Can't sing can't even rap! Just dreadful.
I saw Axl about 13 years ago and he was very good, electric atmosphere when he threatened to quit the show after telling one of the security staff to leave for being to heavy with the crowd. Mr Brownstone was fantastic. No idea if there was anyone singing behind the curtain.
Squeal, squawk screech. Every word dragged and drawn out. What's to like? Of course it is all subjective but to me that is not singing. Maybe saying she can't do it is harsh but I would never class her as having a good voice.
