    Well I'm still lost, how does it work? I've found the quartz version on YouTube but that's simple.

    It has a movement that uses the resonance of a small electro-mechanically maintained tuning fork as a time base this drives the gear train via a magnetic 'escapement' which in turn drives the number flaps.

    Wow. Thanks. Never heard of them before. You learn something new everyday, I'll delve a bit more, they're very interesting.
