not as much as when he struggled to identify the Speedy as an Omega, unless he was joking.

That Patek looked more than $33000 worth. ( I don't know my Patek models but that had a few complications )

So who's going to contact him and tell him that Grand Seiko is worth trying? :-)

I think it was a stainless steel 5712 so $33K is about right, going by Chrono24 prices.

Looks like a 5712/1A-001 in stainless so $33k is about right.

Edit - just beaten to it ^^^

Not sure if this video is a joke or not. He throws his watches down...??

At least he pronounced Jaeger correctly.

You can bet there was a cushion/piece of foam off camera and and an edit to recover the watches. But a great mix. They prob come for free anyway or to him they are pocket change (his coke habit prob cost him $millions)

  13. #13
That entire collection cost him less than a days work when he's making a Movie, I do really like him, he made a great comeback from a complete personal and professional melt down and I respect that.

"Anybody wince..?" No - I found it quite refreshing actually; I don't think it's any great loss to posterity if any those pick up a few scratches. Of course it is subjective and I've no desire to own any of those models.

On the forum we put many of these things on a pedestal when really, they're just industrially produced in large numbers and are neither interesting nor unique and can be easily replaced.

Whilst many of us might wince at damage or loss in value, his circumstances are different as I doubt he goes into a shopping centre and takes out a loan at 0% to buy any of them. I doubt anyone would care if he was seen chucking Swatch watches about. It is a bit of two fingers up to the working man who struggles to buy luxury watches but, maybe, that's a joke in itself.

I also liked the comment about Omega not paying him and consequent 'so what attitude' about the Speedmaster - it is a cynical business with product placement, brand ambassadors etc. and his comment turns that on it's head or maybe he's just being honest if he's signed-up with the competition.

Notice that some get thrown harder than others, so perhaps he does value some more than others, the JLC and the Patek particularly.

He's not a serious collector and it is just a heap of stuff at the end of the day...

Indeed, hence his "I just bought him a Black Rolex and apparently I had to have one too" remark.

To be honest, it seemed pretty vacuous to me, but then it was a GQ video, so I'm not too surprised.

No more interesting than a rapper's watch collection video to me, and I quite like RDJ...

There were a multitude of scratches on a few of them, mind you it looked like they were kept loose in the box, so no wonder

    Not particularly impressed or amused.
I certainly admire his comeback from complete ruination.
I would judge a man not by what is in his jewelllery box but how he treats his watches.
He is in a position where he can't afford to come across as being serious about anything, so it feels like he felt obliged to do this video in a flippant, nonchalant way.
A decent group of watches but not exceptional.
One can see he is not a WIS in a way say,Johm Meyer is.
Dont expect him to write for Hondikee or something anytime soon

Hodinkee are running the feature now in conjunction with GQ magazine so I guess "today we're talking watches" https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/ro...ction-gq-style

Seriously though is he any worse than the guys who go on Hodinkee seeking approval for their recently bought collections? It was good in the early days but seems to have gone downhill. I'm not fussy about the brands but am interested in someone's story and reason behind their collection and the more intriguing and nuanced the better, sometimes it's just a shopping spree.

That's comedy for you... For everyone who finds something funny there's at least one who doesn't.

I can see the aim was to amuse, but it failed for me, in the main part.

Some sites are saying that the Breitling and Speedy are both fakes. Certainly the speedy looks really dodgy from the photo I saw on one website.

Possibly props from movies he got to keep?

Check out the dial on the speedy 57 secs in, looks very dodgy - looks like it says spaghetti professional.

Could the whole thing be a hoax?

    I totally agree.

If some are fakes does this mean Hodinkee endorse this...? I think Hodinkee have lost some credibility linking in with this tripe.

Is that supposed to be in jest or did he come across as a pretentious tw** to other viewers as well? If you really can tell a lot about a man from his jewellery, it doesn't say much about him tbh.

Hodinkee didn't watch the video presumably as the Breitling & Omega are bad fakes

    Very expensive and well chosen??
    Fake Omega and Breitling?
    Black Rolex?
    The ugly Bell & Ross?
Epic collection is as big a misnomer as they come.
Even if they were all original, this is an Ok collection at best.

    Nail. Head.

Its just a bit of fun, a parody if you will of those guys on Hodinkee explaining their reasons for assembling a watch collection that could buy a Learjet.

Couldn't be more baity to some on here if Roy Scheider was tossing it out the side of a boat.

Bait, I'm sure. He's worn some nice JLCs (including the deep sea chronograph) in films.

Hadn't spotted the fakes (my bad, especially the Speedy, and I've owned 2 of them).

I thought it was quite expensive, probably over £65k? More than I earn in a year, anyway!

I still enjoyed the video, which I now think is bait, but still funny!

So Hodinkee are mocking the very people/collectors they covet?

If it's a joke it's been written by Leigh Francis and like all his stuff is absolute crap.
