Thread: Shed paint colour ideas?

  1. #1

    Shed paint colour ideas?

Well, we have finally decided on graphite plastic decking for our back garden, expensive but worth it I feel if for nothing else than low maintenance!

My shed is new and has a 15 year guarantee, I was told there is no need to paint it, but alas my wife hates the natural look. Right next to the shed we have an enclosed oil tank which has already been painted dark brown.

I'm looking for ideas on colours to paint the shed and enclosure, I'm sure some of you like to have a nice back garden and could share your ideas and pics?

    Cheers!

Without a picture to see the layout and backdrop etc. it's hard to suggest ideas.

However you have 2 main options IMHO - 1. to blend the shed in with the oil tank and other garden structures in that area, or 2, to make it stand out, which will have the effect of "pushing back", the other structures IYKWIM.

My friend recently painted their summer house which I think goes really well with the brown fence.

i have sheds in dark blue, light blue and dark green. they all look pretty good imo.

if you want any colour, then i recommend alcro ( formerly called beckers )
these guys will mix up any colour for you
    https://www.paint-paper.co.uk
    they also stock osmo

you might wince at the price , but it won't need retreating for a much, much longer time than anything else.

if you want cheap and cheerful but with a severely restricted choice of shades, then i would recommend ducksback

if you are going for colour, then forget cuprinol shades et al, just bite the bullet and buy alcro

    just my 2p

With the graphite coloured decking, there's also an option for an even lighter grey/greenish colour.

But, as said: pics will help a lot!

I painted my fence "urban slate" which is a very dark grey - it looks good against light grey steps so depending how the decking looks maybe that or something lighter.

Be warned it is like painting with water so mask up everything near the shed !

Here's a quick iPhone pic from my spare room -

beleive it or not it's 3m from the edge of the grass to the hedge and 13m from the shed to the other edge of the garden, this is the area getting decked in the next few weeks as its a 2m drop just past the edge of the grass so wasted space essentially and may as well make use of it.

That pole behind the shed is new, it was slap bang in the middle of the garden but after a few sympathetic calls to SP Networks they removed the old rotten one and moved/installed a new one behind the shed right on the edge of my land.

The decking will have a bespoke fence made all around it up against the bush, and the deck will be flush against the grass so when I mow you will just put two wheels on the decking for a perfect cut, or at least that's what the landscaper has told me ;-)

to to give you an idea of the surroundings I'm the last house but one on a headland, 50m from the sea -

    Looks a lovely place :-)

I'd pick the same colour as Roy's shed - great colour and will look great in your garden.

    I'd go light bluey grey
' pentonville scapegoat ' I think farrow and ball call it
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

Got three big sheds and a summer house all painted in the same colour

Went to a paint specialist to get paint .......it's a farrow and ball colour in Superdec Paint ( Superdec paint = the best outdoor paint ever IMHO)

Do the same ....choose the colour you want and go to a specialist for him to mix it

If only I could get photobucket to work I could impress you with photos of the baronial pile. The cricket pavilion looks especially good this year.

Thanks, it is a lovely spot, it was a long hard slog to get here but that's all history now and we are over the moon! Living right by the beach is great for my little girl who is 6 and I've never been so active!!

all we need to do now is get the unadopted road approaching the house sorted, which should be done by the end of the Summer (well it better had be as its killing my M4!).

Quick shot from the bedroom balcony -

I will take a look in the shed tomorrow ......the actual Superdec paint is mixed so it doesn't have the farrow and ball colour on it , but I'm sure we bought F&B samples first.

btw , I can't sing the praises of Superdec enough ....it might be £96 per 5l but it's worth it

    What a view!

Due to the different colours of the shed and the fenced 'box' next to it, it looks like it's not tied in (don't know how to put the down in better English - I am not Alan Titchmarsh!). Make sure that the shed and the fence next to it and the wooden wall in the back are colour-coordinated: all the same colour or using the same colour-line in a few different shades.

From Seikopath's posting: this is exactly the colour I had in mind combined with graphite. Glad you posted this (and... great minds think alike!)

I was using a clear preservative at about £20 a gallon but last year switched to Creocote. You can pick it up quite cheap since the oil price crashed. This is light tan but they do a dark as well. Enhances the wood IMO.

The old boys rounds here still use old engine oil thinned with turps or white spirit. Certainly works well as a preserver although as Henry ford once said, any colour as long as it's black. The Mrs might not appreciate the garden smelling like an oil refinery though.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

Been out and checked this morning ......it's Farrow and Ball "Green Smoke" (as I said before , I had a specialist mix this colour up in exterior Superdec)

I do like it ....it seems to turn a different colour or tone depending on light .

    Few old shots to get an idea ;

We are having a shed made at the moment and have been discussing colours.

Options where the same as the fencing or make statement piece out of it so we are going for pink and cream.

Should make a statement i reckon.

will pop up a pic when it's ready.

Not sure if this may help, but a quick change of colour in Photoshop may give you some food for thought

Despite "selling" my farrow and ball colour .......id have to say , out of the three, it's the dark brown for me !!!

  34. #34

    Wood coloured creosote for me.

No messing about, just slap another coat on, it never flakes and really sinks in to protect the timber.

I blame Alan Titchmarsh for all these weird colours......... that and decking.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

I love these threads - they remind me how modest my garden/house is compared to some others - then question why I'm being distracted by a watch forum instead of chasing down more ...

I moved house partially because the garden in my old place was too big, half an acre of mature landscaped lawns shrubs and bushes, 3 hours mowing every five days and a fortune on gardeners!

I like the fact that time in the summer is now my own, no worrying about mowing the minute the sun comes out, when in does I just crack open a Peroni and enjoy the view :-)

A camp paint job might be a good idea.

So, my garden is finally finished but I'm still undecided on shed colour!

The decking is "ebony" (composite not painted) and I have used sadolin on the fence, I have now painted the oil tank enclosure "black ash" to match the decking and was just going to paint the shed in sadolin to match the fence?

    Thoughts gents?

Same as the fence, gets my vote.

The money you save on using what you got already could be used in getting a bit of color in furniture cushions, planter etc.

Looks great - how did they suspend the decking - 13m stilts or some sort of cunning cantilever type arrangement ?
