Saying Goodbye To My Faithful Companion

It's with a heavy heart I had to make the decision last night and let Barney, my Springer Spaniel, pass away. He was nearly 14 years old and as youthful as the day he came into my family's lives. The shock for me was the speed in which a minor case of stomach bloating escalated into to something far worse so very quickly. The vet believed there was more than likely an underlying tumour and for the Barney the scales had finally tipped against him. I felt terrible signing that piece of paper to put him to sleep but was told under the circumstances there would be very little they could do, so for me it was important he suffer no further.

He was our first family pet and my shooting companion and excelled in both worlds. Naturally the children are devastated and our younger Labrador (2 years old tomorrow) is very forlorn and distant. I remember being upset as a child when we lost our dogs and cats, but losing Barney has surprised me as to how much his departure has affected me emotionally. I'm in pieces!

I can console myself in the fact he had never had to visit the vet for anything important prior to last night and lived life to the full, a great beaters and peg dog, enjoyed protecting the front door with his barking to anyone who knocked, enjoyed his usual spot in front of the log burner and ensured Buster knew he was boss whenever he chanced his luck. Always affectionate with the children and strangers alike. He was a real people dog.

Took this photo beginning of the summer and can't believe he is no longer with us.

    RIP "Old Boy"

Very sad. I love dogs, and am always upset to hear of their passing as it reminds me of losing our family dog when I was a kid.

Focus on all of the good memories

I sympathise deeply. We had to let our beloved old French Bulldog go earlier this year and it was (and sometimes still is) very sad.

Barney sounds like he was a wonderful dog, which is also how he looks in the photo that you shared. Take comfort in all the good years he had with your pack.

Sorry to hear that mate. People who don't have pets don't usually realise how they are such a big part of the family. RIP.

So sorry to hear this, Jason, but at least the end was not drawn out and his life was fantastic. Even 16 months after losing my own beloved dog, this thread has brought tears to my eyes.

Sad times, I've had to say goodbye to two dogs over the years, both Barneys age, heartbreaking experiences, as others have said, remember him for the 14 years of unquestioning loyal devotion and companionship.

    Hello

Very sorry for your loss. Had a few near misses with our two. One old, one young. Not looking forward to crossing that bridge. Especially as my daughter will be heartbroken.

    Regards,

    Ben

Sincere condolences. There's just something magical about the devotion of a dog; But what a great enriching life you gave him, you could do no more than give him this daily tribute.

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like you gave him the most perfect Springer lifestyle, so be very proud of that. Our Springer is only 2 but I will feel the same when his time comes.

I know how you feel mate, held my Westie in my arms as the vet did the deed, tears streaming down my face. But remember the good times you had while out shooting, it takes away the pain a little.

Very sad indeed. We had to let go our cat this summer, because of he couldn't walk anymore. He was 17 years old, last five years of his life he was blind and deaf.

Very, very sorry to hear such news. But you have the consolation of having enjoyed such wonderful times with the boy. I dread the time coming for my own boy......he is my life and soul. All the best to you at this so very difficult time.

I have never understood the attachments to family pets as I have never had any.

My new wife has had dogs all through her family and 3 weeks ago we got our first dog and it amazed me how much happiness they give you and your family.

    I am sorry for you.

Many thanks for all your kind words. It's being able to share such intimate emotions with fellow members that makes this forum such a very special place indeed.

I was able to cradle Barney in my arms together with my eldest son when the injection was given, and yes we both sobbed our hearts out.

We buried him today in the garden which has given us all a bit of closure but he'll never be far from our thoughts and love. Unfortunately Buster is a very lost soul at the moment, bless him!

    Sad news indeed.
Buster will end up being your 'crutch' through this difficult time. I'm convinced that animals, especially dogs have a sixth sense.
Remember the good times past and the good times yet to come with Buster.

Its devastating...heartbreaking....I hate having to go through this :-(
    Thoughts are with you...

I found this poem that i liked....

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

    For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

Sorry to hear about Barney he sounds like he was a real cracker, I know how hard it is, I had to let my constant companion TC go to sleep after 16 years. Still hurts like a bugger !
    Cheers

I feel your pain. We made the same awful decision on Monday evening after our young cat suffered a road accident at the weekend. It leaves such a gapping hole in life doesn't it.

Barney looked like a top fellow. I'm sure his memory will endure long after the pain of his passing has dulled. All the best to you and yours at this sad time

Always sad when a pet comes to the end of it's days. Sounds like this one had a good life, and 14 is the equivalent of a human living to mid-90s so he had a good innings. He's been lucky to have both quality and quantity of life.

I grew up with a boxer dog and I remember having to have her put to sleep, never forgotten it.

I`ve never had the urge to own a dog, but my stepdaughter got a Labrador puppy 3 years ago and you can guess who gets the job of looking after him when he's home alone. Her husband works shifts so there aren`t many days when the dog's left in, but when he is he usually comes to our place and either me or wifey take him out. Have to admit we've become v. attached to him and we almost consider him to be ours. He's a super dog, v. good natured and well-behaved, we miss him when he's not around for a few days.

Keeping pets is good for us, I`m convinced of that.
