With the Steinhart build quality and Newman dial looks you can't really go wrong.
My only query would be on size (added height due to the chrono module), it looks like a big hunk of metal so would be interested to see how it sits on the wrist.

Well the Newman inspiration isn't accidental that's for sure. At first look I thought it was a Newman. It's a cheeky homage that's for sure. Sent the link to my Mrs, my birthday in 6 weeks (here's hoping haha)

The Swiss made just makes it laughable imo. Homage gone too far.

The 18mm height is also rather bonkers.

    18mm, I didn't read that carefully. That's huge :-O

I have been giving this serious consideration. Neil at Chronomaster has it in stock at £850. Yet to see one second hand, been keeping an eye on e-bay as someone will buy one and then move it on. Might as well let them take the initial depreciation

I can't decide what I think of this. I've had four Steinhart and loved them all but looking back, none were going to be keepers. There's plenty to like about all their products but I just can't see this one as a good purchase. Too long, too tall, too expensive for a Steinhart. Admittedly, a great price but for me Steinhart are at their best with basic divers and fliegers.

Edit: actually, I'm talking guff about the price, 823 quid seems almost entirely reasonable.

It is not a small watch but looks and feels great. The only problem is very little lume on a very small area of hands. So,not muc use at night.

I bought this one this week.

Another crazy priced Steinhart. The original buyer paid £760 in June 2016 then sold it on e-bay at the end of Oct for £575. The next owner listed it last week at £499 or best offer. I offered him £400 and he shocked me by accepting, so another stunning five month old Steinhart for close to 50% off.

The dial in the flesh is stunning and it means that I can own a GMT without a cyclops - a service that Rolex does not provide. The date wheel alternates between red on even days and black on odd days which is a nice touch also.

Thanks. So are you going to take a punt on the Paul Newman. I watched the attached you tube review and the guy compares it to a Deepsea. A little long winded, but a great review if you are thinking about it. He covers the height issue fairly well.

You could always buy and if you don't like it sell it to me

At first glance I liked it but on further study I really don't like the markers on the sub dials. Could live with that...

I'm a big Steinhart fan, but this one doesn't really do it for me. That said, there are only one or two styles of Daytona that I like, and this isn't based on that I like.

I'm not normally a fan of chronos but I really like the look of this one - the lack of date is a real plus for me. The main question for me is how the height would work - it could be pushing it a bit.

    Jon,

Watch the you tube link below that I linked. It is a bit rambling and he starts by giving the history of the Daytona to add context, but he does a good job of answering the height issue. I just watched it again after posting the link and it is no longer an issue for me - although the £850 asking price is...

Haha yeah I may well do that, you have first dibs.
I was working today 7-7 so only had the odd chance to look, now I have a 97mile drive ahead of me to get home so will look at the video later. As for the height, about 3-4mm of it seems to be the raised crystal so it might look better in the flesh and wear better than it's dimensions. I do rock a large watch tho ;)

I like the Pan-Am look, its just that I feel the hands are too long on the Steinhart, especially the GMT hand.
I think the Pan-Am version of Squale is much nicer.

Thanks, I'll send it back for a refund and buy the Squale then.

Note: just checked the Squale and they all have cyclops - so not for me.

Nice watch, but for about £120 you can approach the same curb appeal in this mechanical:

Nice Rolex, but for 40 quid you can have this Invicta.

    C'mon bud, that's just silly.

What Rolex? We're talking about a Steinhart.

    Hate to pile on, but...

My old Sinn 356 was 15.5 mm thick, which was VERY noticeable when wearing long sleeves. 18 mm seems laughably thick.

    Submariner.

And yes, you're right, we're talking about a Steinhart, not a PoS Alpha.

And we're talking about a massive difference in price.

The Alpha's really not that bad either - Certainly as much as I'd want to pay for a watch with that dial!

One of the most beautiful watches on the market IMO.

Back in the early 2000s I owned a couple Alphas. Both of them were actually excellent watches functionally and cosmetically.

These watches are made (or at least distributed) about 10 miles from me. I did check them out on e-bay and I thought that they did look a bit cheap and nasty - like a bad fake. Apologies if anyone owns one, but I suppose the £120 or so asking price probably is top whack for one of those.
