    Question about "gun metal" finish

I'm a watch collector for quite some time now and I'm developing more and more interest in watches that have a gun metal finish.
Now I happen also to be a brush & polish freak.

My question is if there are some scratches on a gun metal watch or bracelet can those scratches be brushed out?
Or will brushing and / or polishing remove the gun metal finish?

Does anyone here have some experience with that?

    Thanks for the input.

I've no experience on watches but guns are 'blued' or less commonly 'blacked' by quenching them in hot oil. a watch however may be untreated but blueing is a specialist practice.
