Lexus RX. Epic build quality, stunning, reliable loads of features.
Hi all. Our 4 year old Porsche Macan diesel is now not big enough for us.
Budget should be about 40k.
Initial thoughts are used Cayenne, Q7, XC90, Tourag. Any others?
Other alternative is to go for something further down the scale but new.
Any thoughts/suggestions?

New Q7 looks pretty special TBH.
When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you.........
Bentley SUV. Bet that costs a bit.
Belay that it's right fugly.

Can’t go wrong with those mentioned, all top drawer. Q7 would be my choice.
For new, if you can handle a lesser badge I wouldn’t rule out a Hyundai Santa Fe or Kia Sorento, great VFM and long warranties.
Had a number of Cayennes and currently the last of the diesels. Great car and significantly bigger than the Macan. If you enjoyed the Macan then the Cayenne won’t disappoint.
Touareg, BMW X5 or Lexus RX.

If you want / need 7 seats then buy the XC90. It's not the most exciting car in the world but it's safe as houses and looks ok.
I tried all the above and then bought a Tesla Model X
Edit, sorry just seen the budget but through a business mine cost me no more than a nearly new Q7 would have for a variety of reasons mostly tax related.
Honda CR-V. World's best-sold SUV (there has to be a reason). Built like a tank. With more boot capacity than a Volvo V70 - as we know from experience. 40K buys you a new one, but given Honda's quality, it's okay to find a pre-owned. Here in Holland, new Honda's are sold with a 10 yr warranty - and it's transferrable to the new owner if you sell it within that time period.

I saw a Lamborghini Urus yesterday on Horseferry Road
Fantastic looking car, you might have to stretch the budget a bit though.
Had the latest gen Q7 218 S-line new in 2016 and it is a fine motor. Replaced it last April with an XC90 R Design and for me the Volvo pips it in all areas apart from the engine. The XC is quicker, more economical but the 4 pot is not even close to Audi’s V6.
Every other area the Volvo is a step up, tech is far superior, it’s a far nicer place to sit, standard spec amazing and has just so many really nice touches.
I will be replacing April 2020 and would be happy with both but the XC90 would give me more smiles
Would concur with XC90, I’ve just run one for 9 years from new, utterly bombproof, all it needed apart from regular service items (brakes, tyres) was a DPF sensor for the princely sum of £280.
Solid, reliable, safe, practical, comfortable, a very endearing car which grows on you with time, like all Volvos. I was totes emosh last weeekend when I had to sell owing to new job and company car.
Oh, and people will let you out at junctions, unlike a Q7...

Another vote for the CRV, on my third at the moment, great load carrying, dogs love the space.
Bought a Mazda CX5 recently, great car and very well put together. Bags of room and getting 55mpg
Another vote for the Lexus RX, the dealers are great and the cars are reliable.
I’ve got a Kia Sorrento, great car with a 7year warranty, luckily I haven’t needed it.
Lots of space which I like. It has 7 seats but I’ve never used the rear 2 tbh.
Cheers,
Adam.

£40k gets you a full loaded Skoda Kodiaq, not very exciting but comfy and loads of space.

Just seen an advert for the new Seat Tarraco launching next week. No prices as yet but may be within budget.
Seven seater, it’s probably a cheaper Q7
Has anyone said Range Rover yet?
Or if you can wait a little while, the new Lotus SUV will be a cracker ;-)
Were looking at the new cayenne S test drove it a few week back, what a car!! Super scary
Typical ‘what car should I buy’ thread.
I want a large SUV.
40 replies suggesting every single large SUV that can be bought.
The thread should be entitled, name me every large SUV you can think of.
If TZ-UK did have any moderation, my vote would be to ban the car recommendation threads.
Have you though about a Toyota Landcruiser, lol.
Anyone mentioned Nissan Pathfinder?
So OP, it’s like ‘Large SUV’ bingo and you’ve been recommended;
Lexus RX
Q7
Bentley SUV
Sorrento
cayenne
Tesla model x
Cr-v
Urus
Xc90
Cx5
Disco
Kodiaq
Tarracca
RR
Landcruiser
Pathfinder
Lm002
Merc ML
You’re all sorted now.
Since you’re listing...
Rolls Royce Cullinan
Might get a stolen recovered Cat C cut-n-shut dodgy import ex-Katie Price Barbie pink one for £40k?
We use 4x4’s hard and heavy in work towing triple axel trailers. Nissan patrols and land cruisers are the only things that stick the pace. Tried shoguns etc etc but just end up replacing diffs/turbos/endless bushes etc etc.
However if buying one for myself for family life it would be an xc90. Lovely thing. Just a pity they are 4 cylinder only now.
Neighbour has a GLE...it’s not my cup of tea but I can see the appeal if you want a quality package with a lot of space.
Range Rover Velar all day long. Price for a properly specced one would be much higher than £40k (more like £62k) but because of high residual value on a finance deal you'd pay the same as what you would on a £40k car. Interior is amazing, and looks wise it's for sure the best looking SUV bar none. Compare it with the hideous new BMW X5 in the beauty department lol. Currently doesn't have an engine option to compete with the Porsche if pure speed is your thing however. Reliability sometimes an issue with Range Rovers although seems like they've sorted the early teething issues on the Velar
I’d be looking at a G-Wagen in OP’s situation.
is reliability a consideration? If so this may help -

I named a few and asked for comments.
