Weird and bizarre!
Presumably some of them must have come out to earn money or at least gather food.

Ah, they did come out to tend their goat and veg garden(!)
Weird story today:
This morning, Dutch online papers mentioned the discovery by the police of a family of (most adults) who'd lived in a cellar under a farm for over 9 yrs.
One of the children had managed to escape and he made a run for it to the nearest local pub. The first time, the pub was closed (late at night). But last Sunday he managed to get in. The landlord there warned the local police who ultimately found the family. Then the plot thickens: there's no mum and the oldest adult (father) doesn't speak Dutch, he apparently speaks German!
During a press conference, the major mentioned the fact that -especially the younger kids- have no idea about an outside world!

Like a movie story...unfortunate, good it has ended.
I hope it's not similar to that Austrian horror story a few years back.

Could have been worse I guess, there is some really crazy stuff happening these days
Waiting for the end of time makes sense, though.
And seriously, kudos to the guy who reached out for help -- it requires quite some inner strength when your brain is washed.
We have a few weirdos on this forum who spend most of their time in the Trump, Brexit and Draft threads in the Bear Pit and rarely come out to goad other members, so surprising it's not

We've got a new record when it comes to losing in an escape room challenge.
Man suspected of holding family against will
A man arrested after a family were found hidden at a remote Dutch farmhouse is suspected of holding them against their will, prosecutors say.
The 58-year-old suspect, named locally as Josef B, will appear in court on Thursday.
He was held on Tuesday for failing to co-operate during a police search at the farm in the province of Drenthe...
There are more facts coming up, as strange as well. Before they moved to the little village of Ruinerwold, they (apparently) lived in a former harbour town called Zwartsluis, 10 miles to the SW. The police started a search in two houses there. One is a shop and the other a house behind the shop. The shop is old and delipidated and has been for sale for 10 yrs now. People who've lived close to them back then, remember seeing the family. However, it's still unclear if there's also a 'mother' involved.
None of the kids is known with the authorities. That would imply that the kids haven't been to school in 9 or 10 yrs, that they've not been to a doctor etc. It's very, very hard to stay under the radar like that in the Netherlands.
The other news is that the 'father' couldn't come off his bed due to a stroke or something, leaving him paralysed on one side.
But there's more: despite the idea that the young ones were held against their will, it looks as if the oldest son (BBC calls him 'Jan') did have access to social media(!), including Fb and Insta. Sounds odd to me that you have access to this sort of media when you're held against your will. I don't know if the others in the family were also able to surf the internet.
I mentioned the lack of education. Going through Jan's social media postings, it looks as if he has proper knowledge of the English language. Something you don't pick up in a cellar I suppose.
A few postings up, I mentioned that horrible Austrian case we all remember. In this case, the 'father' appears to be Austrian as well. People in the harbour town knew him as 'the Austrian'. Hopefully, it's nothing more than a coincidence.

Another mad Austrian.....
It seems they are connected to the Moon sect and that 3 members of the family escaped/left in the past. Strange story
It gets weirder every day. The Austrian appears not to be the father. A 67 y/o Dutch guy is arrested because he knows more: he's the father. There are three more children in the family; all have left (escaped?) the family years ago. People who know the Austrian from 10 yrs back state that he can be very 'convincing'. Both the father and the Austrian are in custody for -up until now- 'unlawful deprivation of liberty' as it is called under Dutch law.
Here comes the weird part: one of the kids, then under 18 - a minor under Dutch law- lived in a home all on his/her own. Authorities have investigated the whole situation, filed a report but it's unknown what the police and childcare have done with the report. Apparently, the kid never said a word about the other family members.
After a few days of 'silence' there's an avalanche of info available now. In short: the father is a real 'prepper' preparing for the End of Times and the Apocalypse.
I was amazed that the oldest son had access to modern media like the internet in general and Facebook. Now is revealed that the father of the family was very active on the internet under John Eagles (alias) and his eagle-rock blogspot. He wrote his own wiki, had a Vimeo account etc. There's also a vid about his own-built rowing machine.
He's now also suspected of laundering money. The plot thickens.
Yeah, but he's got great feedback on H&V.
