The track anomalies can be caused by the method of tracking linked to the transponder/receivers. ADS-B aircraft are usually tracked very accurately, but under MLAT a lot of the track is dead reckoning in some situations, so it can be miles out, literally.
The aircraft could have been doing any manner of things prior to its reconnaissance/photo tracks, setting up the cameras or responding to air traffic direction.
A lot of these smaller aviation companies really have to sweat the assets for them to earn their keep, so not surprising they’re going wherever the money takes them.
Herc just went over northbound near Lyneham
We had a Chinook over here yesterday evening (just south of Blackpool. Never seen one here before apart from airshow) Wondering if it was delivering medical equipment.
Joint Helicopter Command have established an Aviation Taskforce to support the COVID response, taking people and equipment from A to B etc.
More than likely a flight under that tasking.
Heard a very different sounding helicopter last night.. went over the house just after 11pm. Sound was very deep / thumping compared to normal stuff (air ambulance, police chopper etc) so I hastily grabbed my phone and loaded FlightRadar24 and to my surprise no sign at all... so presumably it was military and either a Chinhook or Osprey but.. sort of surprising for it to be untrackable!
This one will show the military stuff about, you can just filter it to show them or like FR24 specific types.

Thanks for that link, it's very useful. Earlier I found several Hawks and an F16 (off the Netherlands) and now I see a police helicopter over London and several military helicopters around Whitchurch.
Edit Add to that www.ads-b.nl for more information about military aircraft, flights etc.

The surveillance drone from Southampton uni is up over the Solent area.
G-TEKV is an unmanned air system being flown under a civil permission (as the reg denotes) and the simple reason I think is that it won’t be fitted with ADS-B, as it isn’t required to be.
I suspect that G-TEKV uses a Mode-S transponder and FlightRadar is using MLAT to track its position (borne out by the occasional erratic track being shown), whereas the website adsbexchange tracks aircraft with ADS-B transponders.
That probably explains why it isn’t shown on the latters website.
Drone G-CLLU ULTRA TDP-001 up over Lee on Solent. Think it might be this link.

I was looking at a Typhoon off the coast of Aberdeen and it just disappeared, at 19,000 feet! Stealthy, or what?
The call sign was Psycho19 or some such thing
Currently 4 RAF aircraft showing on FR24
A C17 has just done a touch and go at Liverpool
A MRT is just about to land after an air to air refuelling session over the North Sea and a C130 is doing circuits
An A400m over the south coast
Don’t often see that may RAF aircraft showing up

This passed over 3 times today doing touch and goes at Glasgow airport. Ascot481, A400
Seems as though its Prestwick's turn this evening...ASCOT439.
I suppose that this is an ideal training opportunity for the RAF to train using different airfields and it will give the local ATC and airport control something to think about.
I wondered where the BBC helicopter was off to.
We live a couple of miles ish from Edinburgh airport, it's been so quiet during lockdown that we now look up when we hear an aircraft.

Maybe ASCOT486 (A400 ZM415 https://tar1090.adsbexchange.com/?icao=43c5e9) was one of the targets? It flew out of Brize, dropped to low level over the North Sea and is now returning.
Edit Plus, the NATO E3-A looks to be returning home.
