saw this pop up on a couple of friends Stalkbook, never heard of it & just had a go. 5th attempt for first try isn't bad I suppose!

All 6 for me, as my brain refused to let me go there as it being a word they would be used.

  6. #6
Managed it in four today which seems to be my average. I’ve been mentioning it to kids of people since I started playing it at the beginning of the week. I love it.

    4 today.

Not related to today's puzzle but been thinking of tricky 2x double letter words, eg SHOOS etc. There are even a few words with just 2 letters, eg MAMMA, UNNUN, etc...

Solid 4 today, zilch on the first line as per usual!

Mrs P got it in 4 as well.

Managed it in two today. Total fluke, but my pride shows I obviously don’t have a much else going on in my life. Haha. No need to comment.

Four for me today again. Two is my lowest attempt and six my highest but I have managed to get all six I’ve tried so far. I do start to get twitchy if I don’t have it after four attempts though.

6 days in, got four of them in 3, the other two in 5. Quite enjoying it.

introduced GF to it after doing a couple of days myself. She now hates me as she simply didn't get it at first and then spent ages doing it without success.

I did it in 3; another reason I'm not popular today

quite enjoying this as it is a quick process and gets the grey stuff working.

So much depends on how you start. (I have not done it yet today)

Annoyed by my first ever six, I decided to create a spreadsheet, using an English letter frequency table, to determine possible useful start words. The first I happened upon was from Cornell University.

Using Excel’s XLOOKUP function, I created a spreadsheet which can “score” start words by adding the component letters’ frequency percentages. While this is clearly not going to assist with all Wordle games, as today’s has shown, it may be of use.

My personal favourite (before creating this sheet) was, FEAST.

    F E A S T 37.82
    2.3 12.02 8.12 6.28 9.1

Here are some others that have been suggested in this thread, as useful start words:

    A D I E U 34.65
    8.12 4.32 7.31 12.02 2.88
    T H I R D 32.67
    9.1 5.92 7.31 6.02 4.32
    A I R E D 37.79
    8.12 7.31 6.02 12.02 4.32
    E A R T H 41.18
    12.02 8.12 6.02 9.1 5.92
    S O A R E 40.12
    6.28 7.68 8.12 6.02 12.02
    A U D I O 30.31
    8.12 2.88 4.32 7.31 7.68

As you can see Earth provides most coverage, in frequency terms. What then could be the best start word using this frequency table? Well the best I could come up with is: ATONE - 43.87

Letter frequency is probably less important than letter/word patterns in solving Wordle but, it's a good starting point.

A 5 for me too. Took until the fourth go just to get one letter in the right place. Also took me a hours to get through as I seemed stumped to even think of the words for the letters I had. Still, it’s no fun if it’s easy.

Two letters after four tries. Going to try the last two after some coffee tomorrow, can’t go to bed on a loss.

Same here, managed to get an incredible 11 letters wrong in my first 3 guesses, took a silly punt on the 4th which didn't help but got it on the fifth. I suppose whether a puzzle is tough or not depends largely on the first guess but that was a good one for today.

Another 4 for me today which seems to be my go to score with half of my attempts being 4's....

For those of you leaving it for tomorrow, does it let you do that? I thought it was a one word per day game and had assumed if you didn't get it in that day, it was a fail?

    Cheers,

    Adam.

3 goes and still only had the 1 correct letter in the correct place from my first go. I ended up at the full 6 and seem to be getting worse!

Messed up my 2nd word and had a few variations for the winner so a poor 4 for me. Oh well!

A 4 is not poor, it is 'splendid'.

A disappointing 5 today. Pretty much drew a blank after two though.

My first fail, albeit in German so I have an excuse. Should’ve chased the missing letter for safety.

a failure for me, despite having 3 in the right place at the third. I made the mistake of trying to conclude asap instead of ignoring the 3 and trying to eliminate more letters in one go.

There are some right pigs in the archive. If I hadn't really narrowed down the possibilities I might not have got this one with three letters the same:

And this was a close call despite the strong start:

P.S. I don't always go with the unique letters technique but it does pretty much guarantee success with the more obscure words.

For the 3rd day running my first two lines have given absolutely no letters in the right place or the wrong.
12th letter today before I got a yellow.
Still managed to do it by line 5.

I try to get the vowels first, plus the common letters of r, s t.

So, for example, rouse, adieu, roast.
