I like those, good combinations to eliminate or prove lots of letters.
I haven't tried the sacrificial second line method yet, I can definitely see its benefits.
In the unlikely event there are no letters in your two lines, you've eliminated ten letters, plus Q, so only fifteen left and there's definitely at least one O. Good shout.

I just use something sensible that comes to mind every day. Don't think it makes much difference TBH and the challenge is to complete with whatever letters this throws up.
I have a few that I use for my opening gambit. I used ARISE today but my favourites are NOISE & ADIEU. I also use EARTH & SOARE sometimes. My brother always uses SOARE so I try to avoid seeing his daily result, otherwise its like me having a free first line

That's pretty similar, so we probably follow a similar route to the answer as often as not.
True.
But the only way you can ever come up with a solution in two is by either having an incredible lucky first attempt of completely shooting from the hip in the second.

I am happy with threes and fours, which are making the majority of my outcomes - because I know it's not luck but method which leads me there.
I also know that plenty of punters like their guessing, and that is fine. It's just not how I work, I have always been a mathematical person and I am just not interested in lucky punches.

A start word with zero hits is more helpful than one with one or two (if you have a starting word with a good mix of letters, that is). There are probably more words that contain an E or a S than words that contain neither of the two. Now do that for five letters.
