    Which watch to watch?

Why is it that there are so few watches that are talked about here? its always the usual suspects - Brietling, Omega, Rolex etc... there are many brands that never seem to be discussed or are very rarely discussed... some of them really nice. :-) I'm thinking Luis Vuitton ! or Cartier... erm.... hmmmm.

Some of the Cartiers are really nice. Louis Vuitton and watches? Nah don't think so :)

    Re: Which watch to watch?

The usual suspects are what many of us own, however there's plenty of talk about Oris, Seiko, Sinn, Damasko, Anonimo to name a few others .. mind you we do normally draw the line at fashion watches  :D but we can make any exception for yourself, so let us know what you've got, why you like them & please let us have lots of pics :D

Every level of user is familiar with the big brand names so they tend to be talked about more. There are only so many times one can talk about the possibility of a Damasko bracelet.

I have to say i agree although they are seemingly trying to become genuine watchmakers. They even have their own in house movement. http://watch-happening.blogspot.com/...s-vuitton.html

Shame they stuck it in that case though.

An obnoxious and flashy real estate agent I once dealt with wore a LV Tambour

ooookay... that's a shame - about the obnoxious person bringing down the brand, I mean. I happen to like LV and a few others :-(

But that said, yes there are a lot of great utilitarian watches but then there are also a lot of dress-y watches.

So here's another question to the online gang? What is the definition of a so-called good watch (bearing in mind that LV and Cartier have just been called luggage and spectacles makers LOL) ?

To me, I thought it was the "Swiss made" that made it acceptable ?!

To me a 'good watch' brand is one that is set up with the purpose of designing and manufacturing a watch to the best of their ability at which ever price point it's marketed at.

Some watch manufacturer's main aim is to add another range of products to their luxury goods portfolio, including some of those brands mentioned above.

I hear what you are saying its all Roex, seikos etc

Louis Vitton makes watches in a small production and is more about the name than the watch!

Cartier is iconic brand with classic designs and very classy watches

Too many around here are stuck in their ways, imo. There's loads of things out there, that are a little different. In the last year I have tried watches from,

    Bell & Ross

    Ball Watch Company

    U Boat

    Tourby

As well as the more traditional things like Breitling

It's just as well, or it would be a sad place if we all bought a SMP or a Rolex Sub. :P

    Re: Which watch to watch?

Amongst others I have a Chanel J12 with a diamond dot dial, which is a good watch though many here will disagree, a diamond dot dial bi-metal Datejust and round Cartier Santos. The others being things like Rolex explorer 1, vintage Zenith/Omega/Longines (which I guess gets approval) and Citizen eco-drive/G-shock/Tag quartz.

I imagine your choice of watch is going to be small and smart with a feminate appeal , as against the majority that appear .
I will also look forward to viewing your choices lke the rest of us , especially as this may give us all some ideas as to what the femails prefer when it comes down to watches. Hello and welcome.

    Actually, I quite like that.

These fora are populated by people who have a love for horological engineering, and a passion for the objects of desire produced by highly skilled artisans and artists, and the world was ever thus. I'm sure that part of the issue here is the knowledge among our peers of the micro-engineering that goes into a watch, and a perception that unless the watch has a movement made in-house (as opposed to bought-in, although this is a completely separate can of worms) then it isn't a "proper" watch. Some generic movements are highly regarded (ETA for example).

"Fashion" watches (for want of a better expression) are seen as an adjunct to a brand whose main business is perhaps clothing or luggage. Watch manufacture, which is likely to be sub-contracted to a specialist manufacturer, is simply a diversification. Such watches are likely to be quartz powered: a reasonable quartz movement can be bought for a few dollars, and the rest of the watch is easy to have sub-contractors source or make. Put a "label" on it and think of a number. Margins are the name of the game.

These watches have their place, as do the highly specialised "proper" watches. We all have our own motivations for choosing what we want to adorn our wrists, and long may that freedom continue.

The ladies Cartier tank is a very nice looking watch that would look good on slightly larger wrists....

    Cheers
