Wow - what a thread! Let me give you guys a common enemy to unite against.
I wouldn't buy either one. IMO,
Grand Seiko = I have more money than sense (spending that much money on a Seiko??)
Rolex = I have more money than sense (Every yuppy who's 'arrived' buys one)

Never been called a yuppie before. Thanks a bunch! :)
Off to ebay now for a raincoat, filofax, silver briefcase, yellow three wheel van and a brother called Rodney?

I await your report! Pics, please! Ooh and prices, if you can, if only on the model featured in this thread. (I've got the email address up in another window, ready to ask them to get one in stock for me...)Originally Posted by MrBanks
A friend of mine has several modern Grand Seikos including GS Springdrive. (he occasionally has a stall at the watch fair at the Motorbike Museum, so you may have met him if you visited the fair). I have handled them and they are of excellent quality. The details are absolute brilliant. I own watches by several brands with Rolex being the main, including the GMT IIc. Funny thing is, I have nevered compared the GS against my rolex. The reason why is simply they are all great watches and I love them all.
No slaying involved.

Got a new watch, divers watch it is, had to drown the bastard to get it!
Seiko? Japanese?? Not making watches now are they, the b*stards! Nothing good will come of it, mark my words. Just like Yokahama Tyres! And Kumho, too (or are they Korean - somewhere miles away, anyway) - just try asking for a Kumho in Dar es Salaam and see how far you get. The Japanese don't understand KiSwahili you know. :drunken:
The other sense severely lacking these days is a sense of humour. Lighten up mate - its called a joke!  :roll:Originally Posted by Daddelvirks

What a great thread it's made my afternoon. Thankyou all. Love the Seiko by the way :)
Bored with it yet Ryan ?
No bl**dy way, it's my absolute fave now. 8) I decided to move on my PAM 111 as it wouldn't get the wrist time any more (although I'm keeping my ND Sub as you always need a Sub in the collection IMHO), although a 2009 Breitling Blackbird is inbound so the flipping is still going strong. :D I still stand by my 'as good as Patek Philippe' assertion, indeed I'm not the only one judging by this thread;Originally Posted by Karl

This one isn't going anywhere (unless a real financial crisis was the cause). Indeed I'm eyeing up another GS in 2010 but I don't want to pay list so it's a case of waiting patiently for a pre-loved one to come along (which isn't often)
8) i thought about flipping and going for the Ti diver but got a bit attached to mine, i'll see how work goes next year and have both hopefully.Originally Posted by ryanb741

But is it a ''classic'' design, one that will still look good in 50 years from now?Originally Posted by Saibot7

I didn't mention the word fashion, but ''Classic.'' You say the ''Seiko has a more modern design than Rolex'' well that seems to me to be leaning toward ''fashion'' in my opinion. Rolex have been making their watches for a long time now and the design has only subtly changes in 50 odd years. Seiko on the other hand have made a bewildering array of case & dial designs. Some of those do seem to be quite dated now IMO. I'm not knocking Seiko here, all I'm saying is there are different philosophies in their approach to making wristwatches. The Parthenon embodies classic 'design cues' still being used today. It's true also, of say Chippendale or Hepplewhite furniture that use proportions that seem to be relevant over a long period of time. We still have a ''Lloyds'' building & IKEA furniture though.Originally Posted by Karl

i wasnt knocking rolex either look at this beauty 8) both rolex and seiko make bling watches
Excellent thread! I have a GMT2c and a load of Seikos and being most impressed with my Atlas, which I think is almost as good as the Rolex, I'm really looking forward to trying out one of these GSs. Don't give a toss about Seiko not being Rolex, the only thing I'd need to do is justify spending that much now I already have a £3.5k watch.

This is the unique Credor featured in issue 39 of QP magazine, which sold to a Japanese collector for over £300,000. A very bold choice considering the alternatives such as this Patek Philippe minute repeater sold for $575,000 at the Christies HK auction just before Xmas.Originally Posted by Neil.C

I've not had an oppurtunity to handle any of the Grand Sport Spring Drive, so I found Ryans' report interesting. I applaud his decision to put his money where his mouth is...so to speak.
I am still gobsmacked at the value placed of the Credor....

It certainly looks nice enough and I have do doubtsthat it's a high quality product. But.... it is a Seiko, and I could not get my head around spending Rolex money on a brand that you can buy in H Samuel or Argos for £100 or so. Reading your text I think you have tried very hard to convince yourself more than anything else and I expect to see it on SC very soon. In the meantime.....enjoy.
You actually couldn't be further from the truth. Since getting it I shifted my Pam 111, Milgauss and my Sub ND will be next to go as they just didn't stack up against the Seiko (although the Milgauss was involved in the deal that saw the Seiko arrive). I had subsequently had a Breitling Blackbird inbound which I actually really like so that one's staying for now, although ironically I would like another GMTIIc next.Originally Posted by shalako
Also Steve you will appreciate that I am being impartial re the Seiko vs the GMTIIc as it was you who purchased my GMTIIc off me so you will be aware that I had one on which to make my comparison.
Hi Ryan, I remember when Luke (Tangaroa) spent thousands on a Spring Drive Seiko (Not sure which model) about 18 months ago and I was impressed with the quality, but just couldn't get my head around spending thousands on a Seiko and we had the same debate. He is into really high end brands like AP and Patek so when he sais the Seiko Spring Drive is high quality I have to take note. Maybe one day I will get it because I do like Seiko and it's the brand that first got me into this watch hobby.ryanb741 Wrote: You actually couldn't be further from the truth. Really like that Blackbird, I came very close to doing a deal with the seller but he didn't wan't to trade with my Pam 88 GMT and I didn't have the cash. Now that is a great watch and the best looking Breitling IMHO. 8)
  you cant buy gs. Or any high end seiko in samuel. Argos. The reason some cant get their head round all this is because you are a label whore and a fashion victim. Its the chav mentality in you.
reading this arrogant condesending text sounds like your saying Ryan doesnt really know what hes talking about or lying about his thoughts on this watch.Originally Posted by shalako
Guys, I took a trip to the Seiko Boutique (by Trocadero Group) in Bangkok on Saturday. Very nice place, friendly staff and an onsite repairman who you can see at work over the counter, which I thought was a nice touch. They had A LOT of Grand Seiko in stock, most models you can think of, including some Credor, the whole Ananta range , Velatura, etc. Plus plenty of limited pieces. The one thing they were lacking were the Prospex range, which I was disspointed with as I had planned to buy myself a MM300. However, the salesman did say that they get roughly 1-2 per month and he would be emailing me as soon as he had stock
He also mentioned that if you pay with credit card he would give a 20% discount on any watch, and if you pay cash you get a 25% discount!
They can also source any Seiko/GS for you from Japan. If you're a Seiko lover and you're in Bangkok I recommend you pay a quick visit there. Theres a few other watch shops in the shopping centre.
Reading this load of tripe suggests you have totally misunderstood my text. I know Ryan and I am sure he took my post in the spirit it was intended in response to the 'Rolex Slayer' heading. Most of us are passionate about watches which is why were on here and I humbly believe the initial elation will fade quickly. If it doesn't and he's happy with it in the long term and It becomes a keeper then I would be only to happy to have been proven wrong, it's just that everyone I know who has spent big on the Spring Drive models has ended up selling them quickly.Karl Wrote: reading this arrogant condesending text sounds like your saying Ryan doesnt really know what hes talking about or lying about his thoughts on this watch.
You can compare Seiko with Seiko like Swatch with Breguet... same thing, they all tell the time. Same companies too and to each their own. I love Swatch, Rolex and Seiko "experts" alike. 8)Originally Posted by shalako

Things can be taken out of context easily (god knows its happened to me and probably is right now). At first I also thought, eh, that doesnt sound right (shalako initial post) but if Ryan's alright with it, then he is alright with it. I think we are Seiko-philes and I love you all for it. Me too. The spring drive GMT looks awesome, and the GS bug is starting to fiddle around with me....its only a matter of time (2 months hopefeully....and then the SBGR023 shall be mine!).
I too think spending £££££ on a Seiko is silly, but if you are spending £££££ on a watch (any watch) then surely it matters what you get for that kind of green. I mean the Sub I have now is trampeled on by the MM300 in almost every way..but the reason the Sub wins for me is because its a Sub, its a classic, with a durable proven movement and a parts supply chain that I know wont fail me (even though the prices sometimes may seem extortionate).
If I had the money available for a watch at that price (having scratched my '70s Omega diver itch, naturally) I'd buy one. I'm a big fan of another mostly unloved piece of Japanese kit, the Honda NSX, which blew away the 911 and 348 when it came out in the early '90s. The Honda was brilliantly engineered, using lightweight materials to counter the limitations of the self-imposed (by the Japanese car industry as a whole) engine power limit of around 280 to 300 bhp. The V6 engine was unstressed, the car was completely reliable and it didn't cost much more than a normal Honda to service. Very few people bought them because the name, synonymous with mass-produced cars and pizza delivery bikes, and parking at pub factor, were nothing to most people compared to that of Ferrari or Porsche. If Seikos held their price then we'd probably be all over the high end ones like a rash. I agree with what someone mentioned earlier, they need European designers to appeal to us lot outside of Japan.
