Any last requests? Want a blindfold?
Hi All,
I know many of you will probably not consider Gucci as a good watch brand....however, my Mrs seemed to have spotted one which fances....anyone own one and are they any good ? Or just rip off fashion watches ?
I think the one she like is a Gucci Pantheon, a quartz - thinks it was around £1000. Also, can good discounts be had on this brand ?
Cheers
Any last requests? Want a blindfold?
out of interest what movements to Gucci use
I think you probably already know the answer to that question..... :DOriginally Posted by kandyman
But if it is what she wants, what does it matter?
 1000 quid for a watch? She must be nuts!Originally Posted by kandyman
Very much a fashion item. Price is based on the brand image rather than the technical quality. Ladies love them, so buy it for her. Very high brownie point score on these, worth at least two weekends away with the lads.
My wife has a Gucci watch. The quartz movement died a couple of months ago. So I popped the back off to see what was in it and a £30 Ronda movement dropped out. The watch didn't seem to be particularly well putt together, the movement is cheap although when working was up to the job.Originally Posted by kandyman
No worse or better than any other fashion brand, and your missus won't care what's on the inside.

for that money you're used cartier territory - a fashion brand which is probably more desirable and a decent watch! educate the Mrs (and then roll over and buy what she wants)
Or sales Cartier!Originally Posted by skidder
Gucci collection sell belts for £1000 - but then they look a lot better made than the watches.
It's just a matter of time...
£1K for a Gucci? We should just behead him. Slowly. :evil4:Originally Posted by GraniteQuarry

Costume jewellery. Ouch!!!
Massively overpriced for the quality and movement...you are paying for the cachet of Gucci and all the advertising it takes to maintain that brand.
Course,you might be a multi millionaire :D
Ladies don't get mechanical / automatic so quartz makes sense.
It is a piece of jewellery and should be seen as such.
skidder is right - used Cartier is within reach and will probably bring more lasting pleasure than new Gucci. (and the movement is better - quartz but better as has been said already.)
Plus used Cartier must be worth - what 3 weekend with the lads at least? :)
at least 3! Also you could get hand wound or auto cartier in ladies. Wife has an auto santos and loves it. She also loves her quartz Christopher Ward that was less than 10% of the cost though. (i bought her the CW and a previous employer bought the Cartier - the CW was probably worth a late night out in London in terms of pink slips)Originally Posted by aldfort
She buys the socks and boxer-shorts for you - because that's her field of expertise.
You buy the watch - becuase that's your field of expertise.
Tell her to give you some ideas but to trust it to you - and she can then enjoy the anticipation of a nice suprise gift. Meanwhile, you snap up something for half that, and get yourself a little timekeeping treat with what's left......
I changed the battery in a friend's wife Gucci watch & did a quick buff. The movement was held in place by a nasty plastic movement holder & all I can say is I wouldn't have given £100 for it, let alone £1000.
All style & no content.

That'll happen with a £1000 quartz Omega too - although it'll be a £30 ETA that falls out, not a £30 Ronda. Just saying it's easy to slam the value-for-money aspect by picking any premium quartz watch, basically.Originally Posted by chrisparker

We will not shoot you. You manage just fine by yourself :P
Gun...foot...bang 8)
Just get her what she wants.
My wife has a half a dozen Guccis and she loves them and really dislikes mechanical watches like most proper gals. :D
No point trying to educate them into mechs or they will want all yours.
Cheers,
Neil.
I agree with a previous poster - steer her towards Cartier, a Ladies Santos would be much classier.
My wife has one that is fifeteen years plus old , apart from new batteries and glass plus strap still works well ,not getting a lot of wrist time at present , Have tonight looked in the box working ok.

Well in order to keep the peace, we went to purchase the watch last night......but when she tried it on a few times we both thought it didn't look right on her wrist. So what a result....no cheap italian designer watch at a rip of price...plus i get bonus points for offering to buy an expensive watch for her :P
I so want this to be a euphemism.Originally Posted by shellscript

Cartier all the way. The ladies love it! Love it I tells ya!
So clever my foot fell off.
Only Gucci, Armani, Bulgari and Panerai.Originally Posted by captainhowdy

Just to show the flipside - I have a Gucci 9000m bi-metal that I bought over 20 years ago from good old Zales and other than a baggy bracelet it is stiil going strong. I would never buy another but I liked the look of this when I was young and impressionable.
is it real though??

hm, with that £30 point enuff said really (nothing wrong with a £30 movement in a watch, but not if you are paying £1,000 for it!) And how can anyone not care what's on the inside with this info? :bounce:Originally Posted by chrisparker
Ps I've got a cheap watch I'm happy to inscribe Gucci on to and flog for £1,000 if anyone wants it :D
Not suggesting Paneria aren't fashions watches   but they've certainly not been Italian for some time.Originally Posted by supercarl

With all due respect... for £1000 a much better watch can be had... I would say at half that amount you can find a better watch, granted a better brand: fashion or otherwise.
Oh well...looks like this is back on, as the mrs has found another Gucci watch she likes.
Back to the shops we go......
You can get a nice Longine Dolce Vita for that price.Originally Posted by kandyman
Well the deed is done.....managed to get 30% off the list price so still £700 too expensive...but better than 1k  But the best thing is one over the moon mrs, and lots of brownie points.
Fabulous everyone happy - at the end of the day if she really likes it and is going to wear it a lot then it serves it's purpose.
It's just a matter of time...
Depends on how selective you are with the evidence presented in front of you ;).Originally Posted by CliveG
The outcome is the right one. If one forced one's WISsy righteousness on the recipient and bought them something that only the buyer wanted, like a nice mechanical Sinn or someone else's second-hand Omega, there would be a great deal of resentment going on. I will never understand the idea of buying your wife something that would only impress other men on the internet
...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!
Very true.
Women like what they like. :D

Yup totally agree with the previous posts...it would make no sense in buying a watch which she didn;t like whether its a Gucci, Sinn or Rolex...after all the main purpose was to give her a nice suprise and make her happy...Job Done :D But a dent in my bank balance. :( Heyho...off to work we go.
