    Blancpain...........good bad or ugly

A brand respected by many and i'm looking at possibilities. What do 'we' think ?

Any owners care to share their views?

I like them, classic gold dress piece and they seem great value pre-owned.

The brand is good, no doubt but I am not a fan of the fifty fathoms - doesn't do much for me :|

    Love mine!
It just stands out so much from the rest of the watches I have owned (then again this is the only truly "high-end" watch I have owned).
The only downside is the expense and sometimes I think of what else I could own if I "cashed this in".
(Of the 3 options, definitely good)

    Re: Blancpain...........good bad or ugly

They're a really good company manufacturing some fantastic watches, i do think they've gone a bit off track with the new fifty fathoms and all the variants, i used to love those the most, then i saw them in the flesh and they look a bit too 'plasticy' and colourful for my liking.

But, there are so many classics that they do, the build quality is great, the movements are fantastic and they look as good as anything on the market, the normal fifty fathoms is a beauty though, as are the lemans and the other chronos, oh yeah, they also make one of the best bracelets on the market.

Have to agree that some of the newer stuff has gone somewhat off track.

The problem with me about the brand is less about "Good, bad and Ugly" and more about the need of "A fistfull of Dollars" to buy the one I like.

Lovely watches. I'd love a FF but they are just a bit too big - which is great news for my solvency.

That's me you're on about isn't it

Yeah, i loved the FF DLC when i saw it being released, went after it and when i finally saw one in the flesh it just didn't look right, the DLC is a bit too shiny, with the bezel it made the watch look a bit 'plasticy' for me and i ended up getting something else. This isn't to say that you or others wouldn't love this look, but for me i love the rugged look and a matt PVD/DLC, this was more of a gloss finish.

Indeed yourself  I've flirted with Blowers example of this watch more than once but draw back each time also, because of your chosen word of plasticky. Not great on an £8K+ purchase.

As things transpire, the coveted DLC exercise on the PAM 233 is suddenly back on, so that is what i'll doubtless end up pursuing after all.

You really have to see it in the flesh, it wasn't my cup of tea, but it might be exactly what you're looking for, i know you're not a fan of the grainy PVD finish so this might be the right one.

So the 233 could be rescued, that would be good, just make sure the firm know how to do a watch, they start doing the whole case and suddenly the glass won't go back in!

Tried on a FF in NYC. Its got Sea Dweller disease as far as I am concerned, in that I just didn't find it comfortable. Unlike a Sea Dweller, I wasn't that bothered, because I didn't particularly like it anyway. Definitely not one to buy "blind" IMHO.

Oh Neil, you are doing it to me AGAIN  - just love this watch :drunken:

In answer to the OP. "GOOD" - tried on the new FF Chrono in Bangalore and its was the mutts - much nicer and better quality IMHO to the DSSD which I tried on at the airport the previous week.

Down side - price and availability.

There's no doubting the fantastic quality, it's a brand I keep trying to like, but as yet haven't fallen for enough to take the plunge. The FF is a classic.

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder - but I defy anyone not to think this is a beauty. I sort of wish I still had it, but it went to help fund a Milgauss GV (I think?) - which I wear more:

Not i think the manifattura models?

It is tempting. My immediate reservation is the somewhat blingy and large 'Blancpain' on the side of the case. I guess it's a trademark but pretty unsubtle when compared to Panerai styling.

Not too keen on the not completely accurate claim to have been in production since 1735.

Simply beautiful & 'toolike', best of both worlds IMO. Would definitely go for one of those in the future.

    GOOD............the build quality and finish

BAD...............the way they restrict supply of parts so that you're pretty well forced to use them for servicing if anything needs replacing

UGLY..............one ot two of their latest offerings

What is ludicrous is the cost of the strap-changing gizmo (tool kit) - a very reasonable £400!!
Blancpain UK wouldn't sell me the screwdrivers/allen keys separately or even tell me the dimensions needed.

I spent considerably less on 2 allen keys to do the job (2 x 69p, I recall)

I just collected a BB FF chrono yesterday.

It's on my wrist now and I love it.

I was a bit apprehensive that it would be too big (oh er) but it looks fantastic.

The build quality and attention to detail is beautiful :)

Some are nice in stainless steel, but in gold? Horrible! Sorry, just a personal view, anyway I really don't like any watches in gold.

I assume you mean yellow gold? I have a BP GMT Reveil in white gold, and it is lovely. The WG has an interesting, subtle, different colour to steel. And a nice heft too.

Some steel versions I like ... gold not really my style

I'm not sure about the gold models, but the steel sports designs are pretty sweet.

    Re: Blancpain...........good bad or ugly

Never really looked at them much to be honest so couldn't call good or bad. However, from the examples on display here, they're certainly not ugly....quite the opposite in my opinion.

Yes, sorry I do mean yellow gold, I also do not like that rose coloured gold that seems to be thing nowdays. But white gold or platinum is cool though.

    Re: Blancpain...........good bad or ugly

I love the watch - Dark Knight - and I will have one - still wanting a 50th anniversary tho - bit smaller case - but then I'm sure I'd get away with the bigger ones these days.
It's just a matter of time...
