    Help Dating Omega

I wondered if anyone could help me date my watch.
I haven't removed the back at this point, but if that is the only way, let me know!
My photo skills are poor, but working on it...

    Re: Help Dating Omega

Actually, that looks like one weird watch, possibly ersatz Omega . Day/date, yellow/orange dial and Roman numerals. I would have to see the movement and case close up an personal before I thought that any part of it was Omega. So, from the picture, I would be tempted to date it from last week.

    Best wishes,
    Bob

    Ok, here goes!
My camera is poor, so not sure if the movement will help?
The case back has the serial 1660117, Omega Logo in triangle, and other bits?

    Re: Help Dating Omega

1960's best guess. EDIT - looking now the one on ebay could be 1975 despite sellers description
This is the closest I can find.
Had to go to ebay - item 250592974833

Same case, movement looks the same, day/date but can't find any dial like yours (roman numerals) yet.
Can you read the serial number on the movement?

Omega's official site seems to have changed recently. You used to be able to research the older watches but seems to not be an option for the moment.

I can't make out the serial number on the movement at all. No amount of squinting does it, but working on it!

    Re: Help Dating Omega

My guess would be that it is/was an Omega Geneve with cal 1022 movement from the mid 70s, which has had the dial redone/replaced. The hands may be a replacement as well.

    Best wishes,
    Bob

Well, it's certainly not an automatic, as the dial suggests, it's manual, so looks like a hotch potch all round. Got this of ebay over ten years ago. Was advertised as 1966, so matched my birth year. Another sentimental rip off I guess. Any more help would be appreciated.

In the picture of your movement it appears to have an automatic rotor ?

Oh, now this is going to get complicated! I'm only just starting out on my quest to get to know more about watches, (rather than just buying and wearing them!). All I do know, is I have to wind the watch - If I don't - It stops??????

You just have to wear it for it to run as it will wind itself with movement, if you find that the watch stops even when worn on the wrist then there is a problem with the movement, you should not need to manually wind the watch

Thanks Dave. Feel like chucking the thing out, but will assess the possibilities of getting back to original, whatever that may be?

its an auto, give is a few winds and then if you wear it for at least 8-10 hours daily it will keep itself wound, if thats not happening i suggest a service! looks like a rescued/redialled watch to me as i have never seen that dial colour used my omega and the print looks wrong, probably an old omega geneve. try using the macro setting on your camera (usually a little flower icon)to get a better close up.

    Re: Help Dating Omega

According to the omega webiste that case reference is for the following:

    Genève
    Gents' leather strap
    Reference
    MD 166.0117

    International collection
    1972

    Movement
    Type: Automatic (mechanical)
    Caliber number: 1022
    Created in 1973
    23 jewels
    Central sweep-second hand

    Functions
    Day-date

    Case
    Gold-plated or steel

    Case back
    Screw-in
    Full metal
    Dial
With luminous hour markers and luminous hands

So it's not a Seamaster and if the movement reference number isn't 1022 it's a total Frankenwatch. Never mind, I'm sure most of us have been burned by an ebay purchase at one point or other

    Cheers

    Ian :D

Go to ebay in an hour and you might find a really nice yellow dial Seamaster.....Made in Switzerland, India and someone's Back Street!
Thanks everyone. I'll chuck it in a drawer and get round to doing something about it another time :D

    Thanks to the forum.

I'm sending the watch to a member. He will look at it properly and we can then assess if it's worth returning to it's original state. At least if I know it is as it should be, I will be happy
