Time to unmothball the QE2 for trans-Atlantic travel. Six days, wasn't it?

Anyway. Screw the supermarkets, the lot of 'em. Farmer's market tomorrow, and apparently some of them use these things called greenhouses to grow stuff that normally requires a warmer climate. Amazing!

My wife warned me not to go outside today because of the fall-out from Iceland
Foolishly, I ignored her and was promptly hit on the head by a Black Forest gateau and a bag of peeled prawns

The worst possible scenario is that we start using ration books again ... like we last did in 1950/51. This eruption could last for weeks or months.

It could last for months, but I expect that we'll manage for a while without kiwi fruit and pineapple slices. Mind if I ask how old you are, Dunk?Originally Posted by sundial

Seriously, exotic fruits and veg. plus seafoods could be in short supply - but I expect that UK growers will rise to the challenge if the aircraft grounding continues.

I'm not sure what the fuss is about.
It's JET aircraft that're grounded, I believe that Air Atlantiques flights are unaffected & they can haul cargo like fruit & stuff.
Plus, flying from Coventry to, say, Berlin in a DC3 or 6 has a certain jene-s ais quoi. Don't forget to throw chocolate bars out of the plane on final approach. :D

I know what you were referring to, but there's a significant difference between using QE2 as STUFT in a war and the current situation. I wonder if the fact that Cunard and P&O are now American owned would have an impact on our ability to do that again - presumably any move to use the current ships would have to be done on the basis of a commercial lease.Originally Posted by sundial
On the subject of ships / boats, I found out from a friend yesterday that he has a yacht stuck in Martinique completely unattended - the original skipper appears to have done a runner, and the replacement skipper and crew are stuck in Poland with no way of getting out there to secure the boat and bring it back. He's understandably pretty anxious, and his wife is due to give birth any day now - not good.
It's clearly going to be an issue, but there are times when I think that the transporting of fruit and veg around the world by 'plane is pretty excessive and wasteful really. I'm not particularly ecologically minded, but eating seasonal, local produce ( as far as is practicable when we need to import a huge amount of food in any case) has a lot going for it.Seriously, exotic fruits and veg. plus seafoods could be in short supply - but I expect that UK growers will rise to the challenge if the aircraft grounding continues.
The country would fall apart :D. The have-it-now generations wouldn't know what to do if they can't get their starfruit and asparagus; the junk-food and mutton-pie brigade would starve as supplies of Argentine beef and rejected New Zealand lamb dry up. 'Course if we just grew more of our own stuff in the first place instead of importing it from the cheapest bidder...Originally Posted by sundial

I assume that beef and lamb are imported by sea. It's exotic and unseasonal fruit that we'll run short of, and I'm not sure the junk food brigade will be particularly troubled by that.
should have been on a sunbed today should have flew out friday to hurghada, instead i,m sat here wondering wether my 1400 quid has gone up in smoke so to speak.
There is a possibility we may witness a blue moon or blue sun ... http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/s ... 098303.ece

It's clearly an insurance job by the Icelandic government, first they go bankrupt and then a little while later the place goes up in smoke...
The ban has now been re-set to 01.00 tomorrow.......
looks like I'm staying home next week!

My Berlin>London flight has now been cancelled and have re-booked for Wednesday. It's a good job I didn't wait for an email from the airline and just refreshed their status page periodically.
Sun shining in Berlin so not feeling particularly miffed. By co-incidence I took delivery of two video conferencing systems last week (plus a Komandirskie and a Nikon D200 :)) but am struggling to get them to work. That should keep me busy on Monday and Tuesday...
What with the papers going on about the ash lasting weeks, the other half is getting concerned our honeymoon in 4 weeks will be stopped.
I note there are voices of discontent from some airlines about the closure. Nobody big dares break ranks though. The notion of a 777 tumbling to earth doesn't bear thinking about.
i,ve been informed that i may have a refund from the airline but i,m still waiting to find out wether the hotel will either re-schedule or refund ,but i don,t expect to find out until tommorow so keeping fingers crossed,i was thinking about re-scheduling for may, but i,m not so sure now.
There seem to be atmospheric strata unaffected by the dust and therefore safe to fly in. But, do planes have to fly through polluted strata to reach the safe zones?

I'm in New York on business at the moment - supposed to fly home in a couple of weeks, but who knows how long this'll go for. Fortunately my employer is on the ball and has reserved tickets on a liner to bring us back, just in case :). Apparently it takes four days...
I HAVE to keep thinking only because Brussels Airways is totally out of the air. No website, no mail, telephone overloaded....Originally Posted by the big fella

I just booked train tickets to London for Thursday as a backup in case the flights are still binned :P
keep trying you are entitled to a re-shedule or refund apparantly ,but it,s not supprising most of the airlines are on overload. even though i did manage to get through to thomson,s alright.Originally Posted by Huertecilla

looking at the afeccted areas it lookes likes uk flights may be possable from 7.00 am, a freind also tells me they,ve had rain and quite strong winds in glasgow and it,s bringing the ash down with it.

Interesting to note on the radio that HMS Ark Royal and HMS Ocean are apparently going to be used to being people across the Channel, and HMS Albion is heading for Spain to bring back 3 Rifles and may also be available for civilian use. It's an encouraging start - and pretty handy that the ships are in the right place rather than in the Indian Ocean or something like that.Originally Posted by sundial

How do airliners and military jets cope with sand getting in the engines in the Middle East or is that completely different silica?
