Thread: I spy with my little eye

Re: I spy with my little eye

Arrrrrgh! I need the 39mm, I better go sell some plasma :D
I knew when I just bought the PRS-5 that the Smiths would be forthcoming but rationalized it because I knew I wanted the 5 for a very long time. Maybe if I didn't just buy a black Seiko Alpinist and a Citizen NH6050 mil style I'd have money...

Re: I spy with my little eye

Copious amounts of beer certainly helps with the size decision making :drunken: This was definitely one difficult choice to make but deep down knew that as nice as the 36mm is, that ultimately that lurvely double dome was for me the clincher. After taking another long gulp, I whipped out the Visa card and pulled the trigger

The deed done, I sat back and finished the entire bottle and then hurriedly here to the forum to gage reactions. The biggest surprise of all was Eddie's revelation about the Fu_K up with regards to the double dome crystal, and that the manufacturer had mis-quoted the cost  Well, that certainly IS a real bonus and Eddie being the honest individual that he is has passed that savings down to us instead of being quiet about it and hitting us for more :P

So it seems that despite the still hefty price tag, that the 39mm is the way to go if you are sitting on the which to buy fence. If there is a next time, you can be damn certain that the price won't remain at this point..

I say grab the 39mm while you can and worry about the bills later :D

Really can't wait to get that sucker in my hot little hands and strapped onto my wrist :thumbleft:

Thanks again Eddie for all your efforts in seeing this through but remember to get mine out first..

    Cheers,

    Konrad

It's a tough one this, particularly as I also have a 53. Things that have crossed my mind...

    i) The 36mm is superficially similar to the 53, but higher spec and looks better
ii) I could sell or trade the 53
iii) The 39mm is a bargain and will have a huge amount of presence
iv) There would be no problem at all in keeping the PRS-53 and the 39mm Smiths
Iv) The minute hand looks a little fat compared to the 36
    v) The lug to lug distance is quite large for a medium sized watch

    Conclusion: I don't know.

I'd have the 53 and the 39. Very nice combo. If you do want to sell the 53, then Id be interested.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

I'll bear that in mind if I do get the 36 - not 100% sure I'd sell the 53 as I'd need to see them side by side first, but if I do, I'll PM you.

My ultimate decision is the 39 and retaining the possibility of converting my 53 to a Type 48.

That said an early and truly sacrilegious thought is that the 36 will be the basis for some definitive Type 48 projects.

A 'strong minute hand' was a specific point of the Smiths W10 ... if anything ... I would call the 36mm's minute hand 'not fat enough'. :P

Re: I spy with my little eye

I've been convinced to give the 39mm a try - my card has had such a hammering this month. I still have the feeling that it's going to be a little too big / long for me, but working on the assumption that subsequent editions will carry the full cost of the crystal, I'm assuming that I'll be able to move it on without taking a massive hit.

I was going to go for a black SBIII anyway, so this can probably fill that gap and judging from the pics doesn't look like a step down.

Re: I spy with my little eye

I just bought a black SBIII and was seriously thinking about a 39" also. But at a glance the dial looks very similar (I know they are totally different watches). Just in terms of having multiple watches all with different looks/purposes, it's hard for me to pull the trigger on a 39. Plus I have a PRS-18 which fills my no date beater watch. I'm absolutely loving the SBIII, so it's difficult forking over another $600 US for a similar watch...but I still want to. Hopefully these will be around long enough to give me time to make a decision.

Does anyone know if the first 50 of these (36mm and 39mm) have an upgraded movement as was the case with other PRS releases...?

I doubt it Flugzeit, the 50 chronometre grade movement in the SBIII were some Eddie had left over and IIRC they cost him less than the standard ones in the subsequent models such is the effect of ETA price increases.

Re: I spy with my little eye

Initially I thought I would go for the 39mm version. After seeing them, I think the proportions of the 36mm are better. The hands look better on the 36mm (the minute hand appears too fat on the 39mm to my eye), and I think the dial looks nicer too (especially round the Smiths part). I also find the lug-tolug distance of the 39mm a bit too big. Therefore I think I'll be going for the 36mm.

i was worried it was to small compareing sizes to my 53?

I personally like small watches. I think the GIANT watch trend is silly. 36mm is a great size, as you are far less likely to catch them on things. I see the Smiths W10 as a working watch, so I don't want to be taking it off everytime I am working on an engine. The more I learn about watches, the more I appreciate discreet watches that have much more class. The 39mm isn't too big (especially as it is quite thin), but to me it doesn't look as right as the 36mm.

I didn't know about the movements in the first 50 Speedbirds, but I do understand about the price changes of ETA movements, as well as the movement of Sterling, but I just wanted to check. I hadn't seen any mention about upgraded movements in the first 50 of these...

...anyway, according to UPS I will have the 39mm version in hand shortly... :)

    Thanks,

It's my birthday today, and I just managed to get in my order. Put in a couple of requests for specific serial numbers (I don't know if Eddie accommodates these?) including my birth year and age.

Probably sad, but better than a little badge saying "44 today"!

Happy birthday, Andrew   I'm sure you won't be disappointed with the watch.

Wish I could afford one of these, but repeated calculations show the difficulty (indeed impossibility) or justifying it now.

If I remember correctly you're a bit of a skinny wrister aren't you Jon? How do you find it wears? My concern was that in 39mm maybe the lugs would feel like they were hanging a bit, but it doesn't really look like that in your photo. How do you find it wears?

Re: I spy with my little eye

Just got mine - 39mm. It's very, very nice indeed. I'm particularly happy with the way the numbers have been applied to the dial - which has developed into something of a niggle with the SBIII for me. I was a bit nervous about this before I pulled the trigger, but I needn't have worried. On the Smiths it's still printed ( screen printed? ), but the paint seems thicker and importantly I like that the lettering is less 'font-like' than the SBIII which looks just like a standard Arial/Helvetica variant to me, and therefore feels a bit, what's the word, ordinary? The domed crystal is lovely. For those pondering on size - the 39mm wears bigger than the dimensions suggest.

Someone was moaning about the extra straps ( one black, one brown ) supplied earlier in the thread. I don't know why, they are very nice - 'SMITHS' branded and very similar to the Di-Modell Chronisimo. Not that I'll be using mine as I'm a Nato person, but a nice 'extra' all the same.

Thanks Eddie - very nice indeed.

    Neil
