What the hell is all that about  Sounds like another Hungerford
Nutter on the loose. Over 2 hours past and he's still out there.
He's topped himself

Seems like the only thing that stopped him is that he crashed his car so he fled on foot ?

Ralph Waldo Emerson: We ask for long life, but 'tis deep life, or noble moments that signify. Let the measure of time be spiritual, not mechanical.
I've just been listening to the Radio Cumbria local news. Scuttlebut says 11 dead (not including the shooter).
Not often you hear of shooting deaths in Cumbria. Last two (I believe) were the Midland Bank manager in Alston in the late 70's, and Percy Topliss (the monocled mutineer) in 1920.
I have friends visiting Whitehaven this week. :|

Not for me, that's the easy way out. I'd rather he spent a long time in a prison cell with a very small window.Originally Posted by boddah

Why didn't he just top himself first

One eye-witness described the weapon as a "James Bond type rifle with a large telescopic sight". If it was a .22 it could have been legally held but it will be interesting to see what it was.

Whole chunks of my life come under the heading "it seemed like a good idea at the time".
I can understand someone being depressed and ending their own life but to take the lives of innocent people who he has no connection with, well its pathetic really. :(
I cycled most of the route he took a couple of weeks back as part of a tour around the Lakes. Dreadful situation for such a close-knit community.
Tragic.
Scary thing is this sort of incident could happen anywhere.
Like Eddie, I'm interested to know what weapon(s) he used.
Likewise - from the point of view that if it was a legally held weapon, all hell will break loose from the anti-gun lobby.Originally Posted by johnfoxllb

Here we go again.
I'm pretty sure any calibre of firearm can be held legally - as long as you have the correct licence :wink:Originally Posted by swanbourne

This was in England and as far as I know the same stringent laws apply here. (Although Scotland are now trying to ban airguns (with no licence)Originally Posted by jwg663
Rifles are legal in the UK up to .22 as self-loading, calibres above are only available as a manual bolt.
Crikey, I am in process of reapplying for my licence, this won't help :?
Legal if you have the licence!Originally Posted by GraniteQuarry

Sorry guys.
There's a devastating story here and I'm wittering on about gun laws.
I will shut up now. :(
Jim
Radio 2 interviewed a local GP who tried helping the shot, he said the guy had walked up to them and shot them in the face with a shot gun  Jesus H Christ that will not leave much
Terrible news this, I remember having to hand all my hand guns in after Dunblane (spelling?) this will give the anti gun lobby bullets to fire (seriously no pun intended)
Mart
If one of my relatives had been a victim I'd want the shooter dead by any means possible rather than have a media circus around a trial that would no doubt see him banged up the rest of his life at huge expense, I seriously doubt you'd get many answers beyond the ones that will now come out.Originally Posted by Tony-GB

I've just had a pint in the pub with a mate who's a well respected shotgun manufacturer / dealer / refurbisher etc.
Firstly, he was most upset about the human cost and secondly the (obviously) poor light that shotguns will now be shown and the ill informed debate that will now take place.
Living in a rural village I know many people with guns (and who's livelyhood depends on guns / shoots / clays etc.) and having had guns myself feel this will inevitably end up in a 'ban the guns' tirade. :(
It only takes ones arsehole to ruin it for lots of people.
My sympathies go out to those those affected.

Very sad.
My wife and daughter, (8) are in Whitehaven at the moment, visiting family. The random nature is the most alarming aspect to me. Had they been in town this morning, (they were at the hospital where the wounded are being tended), it's inconceivable to think what may have happend. I spent a few years in the Army and have experienced incoming fire, (unfortunately). It's very unpleasant and anyone who says its not "sh*t your pants" scary is a liar. At least as a soldier in a given situation one can expect it. Popping out to the shops and being faced by a loon with a weapon is another matter. I'm honestly not sure how I'd react given how totally out of context the situation would be.
This is really sad, it looks like he was using a shotgun in the latest news reports.
I was on holiday, when I was a kid with a group of people from hungerford during that massacre, it was awful, everyone was trying desperately trying to get news.
I feel for everyone involved in this tragic set of events.
RIP all those who died at the hands of this loon.
Itīs not guns that kill people, itīs people who kill people. Nevertheless, firearms ownership should be as stringently regulated as possible, which appears to be the case, judging by the amount of such incidents in the UK, which is lower than most other countries.
Apparently he had a shotgun and a rifle of some kind...Originally Posted by pastrana72
