    Hi Mike

I have just read this and wanted to echo everyone's comments. What a great thing to do, to help someone that you don't even know. If only there were more people like you about .... I wish the seller well and hope that it eventually ends up with you :)

Amazing story, first post here really nice for someone who knows so much to provide guidance to the seller..

Would be really good if the son could gather some background about the watch and where its been and through what action.. I'm confident the buyer would pay a good price for this information..

I'm glad that his father gets to see the watch that has seen him through all those years being put to good use, i'm sure his family will appreciate the money.

Congratulations Mike, for being so generous in posting such an honest appraisal, with respect to a watch you are interested in, in order that the family can obtain the best possible price.

Why is this one so much more expensive than the last one on Ebay - the £26k one? :?

the little differences make big differences :)

think it has some way to go yet Jon, if you think Mike and Jed can sell them at £65k+ then it still has plenty of margin plus the collectors will go for a one military owner watch and I'm sure the owner has already agreed to provide details, photos etc..,,

i'm probably wrong, but having such a well known and respected milsub enthusiast as mike wood inspecting it and giving his opinion as to how original and genuine the watch is will go a long way towards people, uk wide and possibly worldwide ,bidding with confidence without even seeing it.

50k for an old knackered rolex, i know all the romance and stuff, but still, it's just a watch, i know the military enthusiasts love this type of thing but it doesn't really make much sense to me when this model sells for a fortune, but the other military watches by other companies rarely get that much.

You know guys, I'm new to this forum (not an interest in watches) and this thread is just fantastic. It's very humbling to see how people on this forum conduct themselves. Mike for his expertise and honesty in examining the watch and publishing the information and generally everyone else for wishing the seller well and that the new owner enjoys the watch. Absolutely awesome!

PS. I wish I knew more about vintage Rolex military watches... and had the money to bid!

It's good to see it getting some good bids...hopefully it will shoot up a bit more as the last gasp bids come in.
As an aside, what final value fee will the graspers at Ebay get for this? Am i right in saying they can't get more than £40 for this?...i do hope so.

While I am in many ways not a big supporter of the way eBay conducts it business, I think this is a case where they have added a considerable amount of value to the sale by connecting the seller to a market he might otherwise never had known existed.

Re: The eBay "MilSub" - Yes! It IS genuine...

Can't understand the ebay knocking TBH. If you use your loaf when bidding/buying, with plenty of 'Caveat Emptor' and cover yourself when selling by describing clearly, warts & all, you will do OK. They don't do it for nothing, and compared to other 'outlets' the charges are fair IMO.

Imagine what Sotherbys, Bonhams et al would make out of it

Anyway, what a story :) Is this THE wis blockbuster?

BTW, Wonder if any past or present MOD stores bods have seen it? Is it not STILL the property of the Crown, and could there be tax implications for such a large sum?

    Just a thought :drunken:

[1] Changed this to avoid offence, already done that enough this weekend.

Which of those is the "authentic" Admiralty grey shade, I wonder.

Just curious, is there a significance to the 08/20:17 time signature?

its just where you need to put the hands to be able to inspect rolex logo at the top and circle t / depth rating at the bottom :)

I showed a few people at work the auction and they were stunned at the price.

When I mentioned the circumstances of the sale, their attitude changed markedly. What a great result for the seller and respect to Mr. Wood.
