He's been given a back hander that's for sure
The selection is clearly aimed at fashionistas, i.e. fashion followers/victims, and as such they are a fair representation. Sometimes, I think we view the watch world through a very narrow lens.
In their defence, it is in the "fashion" section - that's a different demographic to us.
Plus it's August....slow news day and all that...
I think it would be an inappropriate place for a selection of £1,000-£10,000 watches, so I think it's quite fair of them to list a bunch of affordable, fun watches.
one word - Monster (seiko that is) :DOriginally Posted by spluurfg
I know what you mean...I don't expect non-wis people do like watches, such as the seiko monster, but even with the affordable fashion criteria - the only watch I would agree with there is g-shock. :blackeye:
I find this statement more concerning than the watch choices :mrgreen:Originally Posted by sunster
Fan may be overdoing it but I think they've a good website and their football coverage is as good if not better than the rest. They're fairly forward thinking in that they've a good range of podcasts and a good iphone app.Originally Posted by JC180

The Guardian has it's target demographic, as does the Telegraph, Star and Sun. All can have useful slants on the world. After all nothing is without bias and all exist to make a profit.
... looks like it was made in somebody's garage.
john
Costume jewellery. Ouch!!!
Yeah, but look at the name on the dial, so it must be good.
:laughing5: :laughing5: :laughing5:
Thanks for giving me a good start to the day - much appreciated
Probably they have chosen the best five watches in the Guardian building :D
Hilarious!
The Burberry could have been made slightly more stylish IMO with a check strap though.
Cheers,
Neil.
Five of the best watches we've been given this week?
Five of the best watches that come with advertising cash?
It doesn't actually say what they're best at or for
"A man of little significance"
Imagine going through life thinking, that those are five of the best watches.
Well, at least they got Casio right.
Please tell me that this is a joke. Right?
I'm not as think as you drunk I am.
I quite like that Burberry and the fifth one. Shame they're fashion brands. Zeno or Aristo could easily have produced that Burberry with a 2824-2 movement and it would sell for a similar price... I like the worn look with a military feel. As it stands, it's probably a quartz movement and should only be sold for about £15.
Oh, and God forbid anyone on here wears a G-shock...

A connoiseur I'd say :D
Daddel.
Got a new watch, divers watch it is, had to drown the bastard to get it!
It's Swiss Made don't you know :DOriginally Posted by shadowninja
As for the original post, I don't like any of them which must mean that they must be fashionable.
I suspect the Swiss who made it come from the very extreme east of the country and eat boiled rice as their staple food.Originally Posted by Tahiti

WTF - doesn't fit into my category for anything - the G-shock in a different colour might get a days use once a month or so but apart from that the others don't even look good enough to try out a certain members power tools on.
It's just a matter of time...
These look to me like a fair cross section and representation of the world of fashion watches. It is in the 'fashion' segment. Anyone else got quartz fashion watches they preffer to these? :)
If they were reviewing 5513 subs in the 'fashion' part of the guardian we'd be even more annoyed ;)
Haha Very true. Imagine a fashion mag featuring a Sub with mil hands, a 1969 Speedmaster, a 1963 SM300 and a Paul Newman Daytona. There'd be outrage in the horological world. Riots in Burlington Arcade. We'd be camping in Parliament Square. Well, ok, we might write a stern email to the editor.Originally Posted by metaljesus

It's not even the best G-Shock :?
The sad thing is that for the £100-£300 these are bracketed in there is a LOT more watch out there to be had. These are a terrible indictment of a our buy it/throw it away world.
Or perhaps I'm just an old fart who likes old stuff
Burberry? Seriously?
Ryan
It might be the minimalist in me but I really like that blue 'uniformwares' watch. They have some interesting colour ways on their website: http://www.uniformwares.com
Exactly why I like them.Originally Posted by pashmolean

The topic(s) about the Casio A168W illustrate this too. Only some 30 euros, very good value for money and totally in vogue over here.
Also, the G-shock (maybe not thát one but still) actually is a véry strong contender for the overall number one bar none.
Watch Ídiot Savant it is
Not impressed with this Mickey Mouse choice.
The Mickey Mouse dial is next year's top choice - you're way ahead of the game.Originally Posted by Bee.M

Mickey raver watch.
What's with all the G shock love on the WIS forums anyway, they are just a rugged crappy digital watch.
"My beater is a G Shock" - well if a beater is an everyday work watch then you wear a crap watch for most of your life regardless if theres a Patek or a Vacheron in the safe.
Let's call a spade a spade.

Come on man, get off that fence and spit it out
I don't have a beater, probably because I work in an office so I don't trash watches, but if you delivered concrete for instance it would perhaps be a different matter.
Believe me, I have no love for G-Shocks, but I can kind of understand the need for something crappy you don't have to worry about.
Those UniformWares seem to be the talk of the town. Seen them all over the fashion / style / lifestyle 'blogs. Agree re the straps - not easy to get decent 18mm straps nowadays. Also have some interesting leather ones coming along...
Expect Gok Wan to be sporting a Sinn 556 if minimalism is on its way in.
Funny stuff...
Lacoste?! WTF?! :/
