Superocean Heritage, or Abyss? Update - incoming!

I am interested in buying one of these, but really cannot make up my mind! (Not usually a problem I have...)

On the one hand, the Heritage looks very tasteful, understated for a Breitling, and rather classic. But on the other hand the new Abyss looks very modern, rather cool and a little bit funky (rather like I try to kid myself I am... :D ).

So what do you think? Which one should I go for? I really, really can't make up my mind on this.

Or are they both horrible and I should go for something else entirely?
So clever my foot fell off.

Abyss - no contest in my book really - but then I have an older one and not a heritage either.
It's just a matter of time...

I wish I could help you but I have the same "issue".
I think I would go for the "old" Heritage with small seconds.

I recently had the SO Abyss, might even have been the first one on the forum. While I found it a good watch, it always looked a bit on the small side, and as others have pointed out, it looks much better in the photos, than it does in the metal.

It was moved on to a new home, soon after, but if it's something new and a bit different, why not go for a AT

I have tried the Abyss and find it too small on the wrist, but then again the Superocean Heritage was too large for my current tastes. However, it has been the most photogenic watch I've owned...truly stunning 8)

My choice is the Abyss as it is the perfect size for most.

I think the Heritage will be easier to live with long term. I kinda like the SuperOcean II at the moment, but I just know that will be short lived. Strange, for years I couldn't stand the Heritage, but I've really grown to like it's classic looks

I also think you would find stronger residual value in the Heritage if that makes a difference to you. After all most of us end up flipping at some point

I much prefer the looks of the SOH; I'm wearing mine as I type.

I think it's a design that will still look good in ten years time; I'm not sure that the Abyss will age as well.

i think that the abyss is the best looking breitling atm.
infact; its about the only breitling that would be nice in my omega collection...

Re: Breitling Superocean Heritage, or Abyss?

So basically it's pretty evenly split with perhaps a slight bias toward the Heritage.

    Hmmm...

A couple have mentioned that the Abyss wears quite small - any ideas why? What size is the case?

And as for the Heritage - is the 46mm too big? Because the 38mm seems too small to me. Shame they don't make one in between...

    Further help welcome!

    38 too small 46 too big - 42 just right :)
It's just a matter of time...

38mm heritage all the way. Pretty much the only Breitling of recent years that has done much for me.

Re: Breitling Superocean Heritage, or Abyss?

Id go for the Superocean Heritage every time.

It's an absolutely beautiful watch. A truly classic design that looks equally good on either rubber, leather, mesh or bracelet - a feat few watches manage.

I have a large(ish) wrist at near 8" but still prefer a more moderately sized watch - 41 or 42mm. The 46mm Heritage is an exception for me as it seems to wear much smaller and I found it very comfortable.

The Abyss just doesn't do it for me. I like the look of it in pics, but find it very disappointing in real life. To my eye the numbers are out of proportion, the dial is too small and the rubber bezel looks dull. I also think it's 'trendy' looks will date very quickly.

    +1
That's 100% correct, but the new SO feels much smaller imo, this could be down to the new style bezel, and the chapter ring, both of these things draw the size of the watch down to what feels like around 38-39mm.

Still if it's a Breitling you fancy, why not look at the SO Steelfish, these can be had for a good price these days, let me know if you need any help with that.

    Cheers,

    C.H.

Well, I took the plunge... pardon the terrible pun...

...and went for the SuperOcean Heritage 46mm.

It arrived this morning and I'm wearing it now. Rather nice actually.

I don't own a Breitling, but if I did it would be the Heritage. Gorgeous-looking watch IMHO.

    Beautiful watch,

    Wear in health.

How did you get one so quick? A guy had a want to buy up for ages.

Is it new or pre owned?

I have had this exact model on the mesh, great watch but couldn't get on with the mesh.

    Regards

    Colin

    Cheers for the kind words!

It is pre-owned, I got it through a friend. The banana moves in mysterious ways... :D

I think I like the mesh - but will have to try it on rubber also I think.

    Good idea

I have an ocean racer on my blackbird which gives the watch a more sporty presence.

    Once again wear in health.

Heritage looks like a classic watch that will still look great in 20 years time, not sure i could say the same for the abyss, just my opinion

What more is there to say! :D

    Nice watch.

I have a vintage Super-Ocean (not my photo, borrowed from Egyptfive (who kindly tipped me off about them), but my watch is identical and in the same NOS condition)

The SO Heritage is a lovely watch, although I wish it was available in a mid size - say 42-44mm. I found the 46mm was just a bit too big for me, and the 38mm was far too small.

I'm loving the vintage SuperOcean, AM94, that is a lovely piece, very similar in looks to the Chronomatic. I've never seen one in such good condition before, it looks very smart.
