Thread: Divers and shirt cuffs..

  1. #1

    Divers and shirt cuffs..

Something raised in another thread prompted me into thinking.. and so I thought I'd ask..

My current Seiko divers all bug me in the one same respect that I am forced to wear them outside of my shirt cuff as none of them will sit comfortably underneath. Does anyone have anything more positive to say of the Sumo or the Samurai in terms of bezel or overall depth? If that's a negative captain then it's either polo shirts all the way or desk diving days are over..

    cheers, H

    Re: Divers and shirt cuffs..

Well I have a Sub and an MM300; the Sub is fine with just about anything - button or double cuffs - but the MM300 can get a bit tight with the latter and even with a button cuff it its a closely fitting one (and if it's not on the bracelet it seems to be even more of a problem). I imagine that both the Sumo and the Samurai would present similar difficulties but it can be done...

Maybe it is the shirts fault, rather than the watch...

I can even wear a Ploprof without any problems with mine.

I can wear all my watches under cuffs - chain cuff-links give you more room.

    Very useful..

And yes I suspect so! From what I gather the Ploprof is a substantial piece of engineering..

Can somebody explain me the fuss about watches sitting under the cuff? If it does, well, good, if not, who cares?

I understand there are occasions when watches are not to be seen on a man's wrist, but we do have pocket watches for those events, don't we?

Sorry, I'm pissed off about work, had to open the release valve somewhere

Being only 5' 8" but having a 17.5" neck means I either go short sleeve or have to endure extra long sleeves which means the watch will sit under the wider cuff. Not so bad these days with fitted shirts.

If in doubt you could always buy one of these http://www.thewatchcuff.com

Oh my dear God!!! Is this real? Even the defunct Giovanni Agnelli would not have guts to wear that!!!

P.S. For the uninformed, he was the guy wearing watches ON shirts.

P.S.P.S. Just saw the post above mine, seems SternG is not the only one having my same thoughts. Scary

Wee Jackie, who is of course a brand ambassador for [s:ot4tl8p2]Volvo[/s:ot4tl8p2] Rolex, has his watch cuff cut slightly shorter and looser.

I go to work in jeans and t-shirt so I don't have this problem. When I do wear a long sleeve shirt I've never had a problem with any of my watches though. A few are a bit tight to the cuff, but never had a problem. :)

Go right ahead! No problem with me so no apology necessary far as I'm concerned..

It's not really anything to do with occasion as I'm not one to give a hoot how others might view it, more just a comfort factor and idle curiosity - I've a couple of slim fit CK shirts that are pretty much wrist fit at the cuff where there is no way the watch will slip under.

Might be time to size up in shirts, anyway..

I've a 19 inch neck so ready made shirts tend to come with large cuffs anyway - for tailored shirts I just spec the left cuff as the diameter of my wrist whilst wearing my biggest watch.

But if your cuffs get caught on your watch, for a barrel cuff just either open the cuff or additionally fold back, for French cuffs buy a better fitting shirt or you'll look like your dressed as an Oxfam reject.

Black tie, ultra-formal "functions", maybe? Of course, you can always wear a Submariner, order a vodka martini, and drive away in an Aston when you've had enough, but it isn't advisable :D

When I was last measured up at my shirt maker he asked me to wear my largest watch so that he could "allow for it" in the pattern :D

I thought it was fantastic and told everybody I could for months afterwards. Since wearing bespoke shirts I've never have a problem wearing my watches under my cuffs and I wear a shirt (with French cuffs) every day.

I found that my first Speedmaster was ruining my shift cuffs from the inside by wearing the edge so changed to a reduced size version. Since then i've bought shirts with greater girth on the cuff and all my watches sit nicely tucked under the cuff.

It depends on the cuff as to whether my watches fit under them.

Personally, I like the watch to fit under the cuff at work as it's more understated. Just personal taste.

Well, I did work in IT.

I suppose it depends whether you work with your hands, or sit behind a desk. I got fed up with rolling up my sleeves several times a day, so switched to buying shirts without them.

I used to work in IT, but took early retirement at the beginning of the year. Field engineer, not on-site support. I don't wear "proper" shirts at all, now. Strictly polo and T-shirts.

I'm not so sure that is cool; I think that he is cool. The watch over the cuff is something of an affectation but, by god, he carries it off.

This reminds me of a, now retired, colleague who was posted to China in the early nineties, and who didn't work in IT. He always wore short-sleeved shirts and acquired the nickname "Shirty" amongst local contacts as a result.

I remember that being the standard way to wear a watch in the 70's. It was at my school anyway. I always found it uncomfortable though.
