The rules I respect when buying a watch...

    Hello,

I'm now a long time WIS,I've own over 40 watches at one time, some time ago I decided to be harder on myself before spending my cash on timepieces.
So here are my buying "rules" wich I almost never break.(I will break any rules when Eddie CAF is ready)

    1- Only inhouse mouvement
    2- No mineral crystal
    3- No quartz
    4- No less than 36mm
    5- No integrated bracelet

I would like to know if some TZ-UKer are following buying rules too?

    Do I like it?

    Do I want it?

    Can I afford it?

Although... that third rule sounds over the top to me... :-)

I'm too poor to buy cheap. But I know I'd end up with a gazillion mediocre watches if I didn't try to put some method to the madness. So I actually have a totally different concept of collecting. I want in my collection at each point in time:

    1. an elegant watch
    2. a diver
    3. a pilot
    4. a chrono
    5. a GMT
    6. a white face
    7. a black face
    8. something to go with blue
    9. something playful, just for the heck of it

at a max total of 6 watches.

Subsequently, when I find myself in *need* of a new watch, I have to decide which one to drop. Usually, that makes me realize right there that I don't really need that newfound love.

    Best,
    Guntram

No rules here, except I haven't found a watch yet that would make me buy one with integrated bracelet. :)

Please give me first sight of all the less-than-36mm watches you're offered and refuse.

I've had tons of Seikos in the past ... so I swore never to give them another penny ... but if you want to give me a Jap watch make it an RAF Seiko and I'll break two rules in one go.

If you only bought in-house movements you'd not buy an Omega SMP, Oris, Tissot, Tag Heuer, and many many quality Swiss makes.
I've changed my mind on titanium, and like that version of the Seiko Samurai.
I can't understand why anyone would have a rule of not buying Japanese

Generally however, I agree with those that say no rules.

If I still want a watch a lot after thinking about it for over a week, then it usually qualifies

    p.s.
I would not buy Rolex as I think their quality is hugely overhyped with the prices
I wont be filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed, I am not a number, I am a free man, my life is my own!!!
    Be seeing you

    ????????.
I found that with Japanese watches I lose interest very fast and stop wearing them very quickly ? so I have stopped buying them. It is not an anti-Japanese thing, I love Japanese bikes and find the culture totally fascinating. It?s just that their watches look too Japanese but not in a Japanese way ... they give us what they think we would like and that?s where they are getting it wrong. This is a totally-personal opinion.

There have to be rules otherwise we will all be wearing this:
