I've got £3500 to spend and since being a member here for a few days my head is now all over the place, can see why people chop and change so much, bit like cars, there are too many out there that I must own at some point in my life.

Matt dialed 16660 sd or save up and get a 1665 great white or a very nice 1680 red sub. Be just like having money the the bank on which you can make interest tax free.

If you want new - ceramic sub - end of!

For me personally, it would be one watch. Either a used SDDS or try and get a deal on a new IWC Ingenieur 3236. That's where my next 5 or so grand is going at the moment. Well, there or the PAM 386 depending upon when it's available. All this is, of course, subject to change at any time.

Two or three decent watches. I would get a dress/suit watch for work, sports watch for weekend wear and one for all occasions, bit of a beater type thing

£5k is a healthy lump and opens many doors, whilst we can give opinion you have to go with what makes 'you' feel that feeling that the right new watch brings.

Personally I would do the usual suspects, GMTIIC, Sub C, Green C Sub, Panerai 312, IWC Portugese Chrono,

IWC Mk XII. Not sure how much change you'd get from £5000, but I think it might run to an Aerospace.

so many options, here are but a few:

    1. Sea-Dweller and JLC Master Ultra Thin - the ultimate pair of sport & dress (you'll need to go a little over budget but not massively)

    2. GMT II plus all 3 bezels and both bracelets and a Speedy - lots of different looks and 2 classic watches (and a strong space exploration theme.)

    3. Explorer 1 and 2 (white face) - again, 2 classics and 2 very different looks

    4. Submariner and IWC 3536 - THE classic dive pair

    5. A G-shock and one hell of a weekend in Amsterdam......

Buy wisely because when you decide to flip them, you don't want £3k back from your original outlay! 8)

    Re: Five Grand To Spend...

Yep I'd have a deep sea - but you could get a Ploprof and a 2254 and I like that combo too - luckily I don't have to think about what I'd buy any more :) - I'm quite happy with me lot at the moment.

    Re: Five Grand To Spend...

For me, there's have to be a (used) Rolex in there first - SD, GMT II, or 1680 Red Sub with luminova dial and hands (I know!). ny of those would cover the range of activities from dress to business to sport. With some careful shopping, that'd leave me with £1500 - £2000 left over - enough to get a decent chrono. I love centre sweep minute hand chronos, like the Lemania 5100 or the quartz equivalent.

If I bought the SD or Sub, I'd also go for the Breitling M-1 for the high-end 251.262 quartz movement with its quick-set hour hand (great for travel). But, if I'd bought the GMT II (which already has that feature) I'd suggest a mechanical chrono with the Lemania 5100. My personal pick is the Fortis Cosmonaut LE in Ti; or a Sinn EZM-1, but the smaller 39mm Fortis Cosmonaut's would also be high on the list, as would the Tutima Air Force chrono.

That should leave just enough to get a Casio G-Shock (GW-2500) or Seiko Diver as a beater. Or for those business meetings when you don't want to look too flash.

    Job done!

    Re: Five Grand To Spend...

My choice would be an Omega PO, Speedy Pro plus a Longines/Stowa or Sinn.

    Or

Blow the lot on a PAM320.

I can't advise you on which watch to buy because I have no idea of your taste in watches. Nevertheless £5k is a significant amount of money and ought to be spent wisely.

The first question therefore is do you intend to keep the watch or trade it on? If it is a keeper then I would be inclined to take my time and spend the whole amount on a single piece. If on the other hand you see the money as seed corn capital in a long term activity in trading watches, I would be tempted to buy at least two or possibly three and review the position again after a few trading cycles.

If it helps, I have only ever bought watches I intend to keep and have never sold one. Also I have no idea how easy it is to make money trading. What I can say is that in DCF terms watches have been some of my worst investments.

As long as you buy pre-owned at a fair price you'll have the pleasure of owning almost all of these watches listed on the thread over the next few years.

I'd start with a SD and a nice vintage piece of some sort - maybe an Autavia or a Speedy Pro. I love my DSSD but there is no way it could be my only watch

Anyway, enjoy the journey and take lots of photos :)

Although I agree it would have been helpful if I had amplified my initial statement with with the qualification that it depends whether it is a watch to keep or trade, I think that point is reasonably clear in my second paragraph. If however that was not the case, I apologise for the confusion caused.

And to answer your question assuming the watch is to be a keeper, which as I have already stated is my only basis for offering advice based on my previous experience, I would walk up Burlington Arcade then cross the street at the top and buy a Grand Seiko Spring Drive. The actual model? Probably the GMT.

    Hope that helps.

I might be being simple here but it reads to me that he's asking what "you" (ie: "us") would buy. Not what we think he should buy. That would be silly, "we" know little if anything about him and his "tastes".

A hypothetical situation perhaps and maybe one where he is hoping to gather ideas/inspiration for his upcoming £5k purchase.
I don't know... maybe I read things as they are:

It's imaginary. The question is 'what would you get if you had £5k'. It's not advising the original poster. It's just a general question. The original poster isn't buying a watch and doesn't have £5k. None of this is real, just imagination. It can be any style, keeper or flipper, red gold or green as it's just what you would buy with 5K, not what the OP should buy for 5K he hasn't got. The hypothetical money can be spent on any hypothetical watch that you would like, not one the OP likes as he has no money and nor do we, but in our imaginations we can imagine to spend it hypothetically. Not really. And it could be a watch that you want to own, not what's best for the OP, who is not looking for recommendations, just ideas and inspiration from what the general forum people would buy hypothetically from an imaginary, non-existant £5k watch fund that doesn't exist.

Just to clarify, here's the original post again, although I admit it's confusing...

(£5k)...On one watch or multiple watches
    ...New or used

    What would YOU do...?

Very tough to pick one, but very easy to give you a few to choose from, each of which will come as no surprise as they're straight out of my collection:

Ceramic Sub LV - It's all I wear on my wrist at the moment.
Deep Sea - awesome piece of kit, far comfier than it has any right to be, beautifully constructed.
IWC Portuguese 7 Days - Just gorgeous.

All are achievable in one form or another for about £5k.
