    Rolex Prohunter - opinions

What do people think of the modified Rolex models by Prohunter? Does anyone have one?

haha thanks for that! I've been wondering what makes them cost twice the price of a new model and what they offer over the new model, does that mean there's not a lot of difference?

    Re: Rolex Prohunter - opinions

I had to sell mine I was that embarrassed by it - went out one night in London and everyone was wearing one ;)
    &
They cost more than twice the original.
It's just a matter of time...

Ridiculous price, and if you are that worried about the sun reflecting off the watch, why not just take it off?

Quite like the idea of a black PVD Rolex, don't like the idea of paying almost double for a coating though.

I like their 'military sub' with the 'Military Gladiator Hands' instead of the classic rolex mercedes hands.

waste of good money for another watch!

    Re: Rolex Prohunter - opinions

I do really like the 'military' version. At £5K I'd be tempted but not at £10K. These kinds of watches are targeted at a niche and I imagine sell better to their target market because of these 'exclusive' prices.

Personally, if I had that amount to spend I'd be looking at a nice vintage piece or perhaps one of the new and rather lovely JLC re-issues.

I did see a post on another forum where someone had Project X add sword hands and fixed bars to his own watch which looked quite good. If anyone is interested, I'll see if I can find the link.

I like the idea of them and they look OK, but really Chris is right, they are a FAD and aren't worth the money they ask... in fact it probably de-values them a little over standard models.

    Re: Rolex Prohunter - opinions

I quite like the look of them and some of the Bamford and Project X designs, but I have two 'issues':

    1) The only time I've seen a PVD' Submariner it make it look like a fake/cheap.

    2) I take exception to the prices that these people charge - I appreciate the argument of being able to charge whatever someone will pay, and that this keeps them exclusive, but the difference against getting the original and these customised pieces is so extreme that it raises my heckles. I believe that the makers deliberately pay over the odds for their own pieces at auctions in order to claim that they are highly collectable and in demand. When I see that someone has purchased one of these pieces I respect their individuality, but I also feel sorry for them for being mugged - IMO.

To me the sellers of these are selling the "Emporors new clothes".

For a one grand premium I could be tempted, but I resent being mugged. Oh, and let's not forget that often they are selling the head only, so they're selling a used piece, without a bracelet, for twice what a new piece would be.

Just my opinion, and hats off to those who have them.

Its a bit like putting chrome spinning wheels on a new Rolls Royce ...

If you have got the cash to splash you might as well be different and show off but for me Im into Rolex as I think there the perfect made watch just as they are.

Saying that tho I looked at a project X non crown guard a while ago and I wouldent kick it out of the watch box in a hurry.

Wait long enough and someone will do a £200 "homage".

Those prices are ridiculous, and I agree that it probably undervalues the original in the end.

Other options are Steinharts Ocean Black

The $75 homage has been around for a while now - very tempting.
(and will work out at about £75 with any add-ons and delivery costs)

I liked the Pro Hunter, look so I had this one built:

For roughly 1/60th of the price I'm getting better reliability, and wearable size (subs always look a bit small on my wrist).

    Re: Rolex Prohunter - opinions

I did try a DLC-covered Sub once, (not Prohunter), but I returned it as it looked very plasticky in real life. I have seen some of the Prohunter ones at Watch Club, and they do look quite good, but the price is scary - I also think they will look pretty shabby as they wear and end-up being worth less than an original. If you are going to try any of these watches, you really need to see them in the flesh.

    That Seiko looks fantastic, btw!

    Re: Rolex Prohunter - opinions

I think they look great. Very legible but the prices are as said are way off the mark. Plus there are warranty problems as Rolex will not service them from what I've read.

    Re: Rolex Prohunter - opinions

I'd be worried about the resale value.

If anyone wants an intro to these guys drop me a PM. Their work is good. I've seen it. They will also do custom work. The bracelets are the priciest as they have to be taken apart and put together again so heads only are best costwise.

AFAIK, forum member Bry does custom PVD coating at a fraction of the Pro Hunter prices, might be worth an inquiry.

I see there are still plenty of mixed feelings here. I dont like it. for me it is a bit of sacrilege. Its like buying a 911 and going to Halfords to get a body kit fitted to it. Doesnt really work, the 911 is perfectly good as it is, just like the Rolex

I saw these today at Watch Club and quite liked them despite myself! They really do look much better irl than online.

The pricing is a bit optimistic though!

The NATO straps though are to die for - best I have ever seen!

I'm sure they see themselves more akin to the likes of Gemballa etc. While the original products are held in very high regard, there always seems to be enough demand for a more exclusive modified version.

I think the black Rolexes look pretty good. What suprises me is Rolex themselves haven't released their own versions, with say a 30-50% premium over standard, and kill the modified market. It's seems an even greater oversight given the crass diamond-filled versions they release.

its the same reasons that the oem's don't do the same things when it comes to cars. Sure Merc does AMG but there will always be a market for Brabus - some folks just want exclusivity or something different, like this chap with a project X
    http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_04kZGR_ltmE/T ... r-book.jpg

or this guy with a pro-hunter

    Re: Rolex Prohunter - opinions

I can understand the appeal, and agree with the car analogy to a point. However there are far greater ways of modifying cars above and beyond what a mass market desires compared with simply offering a DLC / PVD version of an existing watch.

    Re: Rolex Prohunter - opinions

I suppose these are akin to the bodykit guys. If you want to muck about with the innards and have something unique made then I'd be calling M. Dufour to place an order

as with any analogy it breaks down to some extent as you delve into it. There is limited appeal (read a new market opportunity) in trying to improve a Rolex movement. Sure you could make it more appealing cosmetically but to no improvement in functionality (and anyway you'd be buying a Langhe &c if that was what you wanted)

Why do I find fake PVD Rolexes acceptable? :(

Which ones should Rolex be more upset about ...

    1. Real Rolex PVD? or,

    2. Fake Rolex PVD?
