    go on - be honest!

how many watches have been through your hands?
i'm an inveterate flipper, and i reckon i've had upwards of 80-90 watches through my hands and on my wrist, sometimes the same model and even the same watch more than once, just how many have you tried?
just imagine if we didn't flip!

Re: go on - be honest!

In my life I've sold two watches. A Breitling Grand Premier (about six years ago I think) and a JLC Master Date (about eighteen months ago). I honestly find the 'flipping' lifestyle very hard to relate to. When I buy a watch, irrespective of its cost the assumption is that it's for keeps .. its lifetime or mine whichever is shorter :)

For some here though buying even very expensive watches seems to be a bit like borrowing a book from the library. Not knocking it at all, each to their own but it's a bit bewildering.

Having said that since I've been posting here and taking more of an active interest in my watches the conclusion that more is less has become irresistible and I do intend to reduce my collection.

Sorry none, have only started this obsession, I have about 4 coming soon and further 5/6 being concidered, more money than scence, I can unsterstand the desire to constantly change the herd as new or interesting stuff becomes available so I can see that happening in the future, but not on this day.

Interesting topic, TBH i don't have an accurate figure, but over the years....probably around 80 or so! It is a great way to try and enjoy lots of different watches though!

I can honestly say only about 20 watches. But then I have to continue with the honesty policy and confess that this modest total is due to financial constraints. With more money at my disposal I'm sure I would have purchased more watches!

Re: go on - be honest!

    Great question!
I was mooching through my photobucket the other day and seriously couldn't believe how many I'd sold or swapped!

Seiko World Time, Fortis Skylark (with a dodgy date wheel I admit...), Black Monster, Citizen ecozilla and countless vintage Omega's (I went off gold watches so listed about 4! IDIOT!)

Probably flipped 40 or so watches in the last couple of years. :(

Course, on the 'glass half full' side of things, I have owned some gorgeous watches!
I've never lost too much money on them as I've bought 90% second hand and sold on at close to break-even prices.
I might even have made a couple of quid on occasion!
Being a keen flipper means I can own hundreds of watches in my lifetime, and that can only be a good thing.
    Right? :?

113 in about 6.5 years. Yes, I keep a spreadsheet, I can even tell you who they were sold to and where. I also know I've lost about 11% on them compared to what I paid.

I've only sold 2 watches, a Tag F1 to a friend about 15 years ago and a Breitling Intruder to another friend about 10 years ago. Ever since then they have all been keepers.

I gave one to my Dad and another to my wife. I threw one away because I was sick to death of it. Something I regret now as if I'd been a member on here then I'd have offered it up as a freebie.

Over the 5 years I have been collecting I have probably flipped close to around 300. Most were not expensive, though!

Re: go on - be honest!

Must have flipped around 50 or so - looking back through the photo achives I can't believe I even bought some of them. Some are also really nice but were just not getting any wrist time.
In the early days I used to buy all kinds things on eBay just out of curiousity. Like to think I am a little more mature now :) and my tastes have also mellowed and changed.

Still got too many though - about another 5 or 6 to go.
Most of the great watches I now have are second hand, so thank goodness for the flippers.

    Cheers,
    Ian.

OMG an 11% loss on 113 watches - now that alone would have bought you a nice 11.3 watches ;) all part of the illness.

I've only really lost on a few new watches I have bought to try like Speedmasters and a few others. Most have luckily gone up in value but only because I have owned them for so long I guess.

Used to flip quite regularly after trying out different watches before I joined here and now I tend to hoard them all for myself - crazy I know.

I think I probably average a watch a month these days; add one, trade one or sell one - but I am not prolific like some on here - selling before delivery or within hours of receipt. Saying that I received a 2254 a couple of years ago and knew within minutes it was going to be sold - I thought it was a newer laser etched cash back and it wasn't :( should have kept it for decent price it cost! We live and learn.

Look who is talking ;) I think your a bad influence, almost making it ok to have keepers/grails for a week or two before flipping.

    Conervative estimate Victoria???? ;)

I've lost count. I've had a f300 cone, rescued it broken, from the USA at a great price, paid import and fees on it, drove to Parcelforce to pick it up.. sent it to Brighton for a spa ;), got it back.. flipped it.. then got it back.. and flipped it again.

And had an Orange monster.. flipped it.. bought a Red monster.. flipped that.. and still look for them time to time.

But my f300 is indeed by biggest flaw.

    On the other side.. keepers.

    Speedmaster Professional
    Sub no date
    Flightmaster 1969 birth year

Can't really say how many have come and gone.. some you know MAY NOT be keepers.. some are.

My biggest gutter was my best mate having a Proplof from back in the day. He bought it at a (gullible.. I didn't think these people were..) jewellers in York about 8 years ago for about £1200, on a manky old mildew strap. The kudos wasn't as high then!

I could have had it, about 2 years ago.. for a nice price.. but was broke.

I should really record what comes and go. But I don't. Thankfully!!

Re: go on - be honest!

    I'd say about 50 watches bought, flipped , re.flipped, traded...a.s.o.

    The high /low -lights:

    - the Speedy: 105.012, bought from a lady in Florida, found pieces in Australia, the hands from Mr Richon personally and a 1450 to fit it.....1 year to get all the pieces together and sold to a buddy of mine :o( who than resold it to a guy in the USA (...but I got my 1450 back!!)

    - the IWC Ingenieur: I wanted it so badly, I turned heaven and earth to get the funds and finally when I got it, it didn't speak to me....flipped it 3 weeks later for a Pany that is long gone too

    - the Seamaster 2254, bought new, traded, re-traded, sold, bought back and resold......lol

    - the IWC Aquatimer 2000 GST in Ti, man I liked that watch, had 2 separate ones and should not have let go of them.....

    - the SD 16600: had 3 of them and there again, should have kept at least one...

    Aiaiaiai...

around 150 - the collection currently stands at 105

and like Dave I keep a spreadsheet

  33. #33

Re: go on - be honest!

Haven't sold any, tend to buy and keep, but then only have a handful of watches, mostly cheapies. Probably going to end up being a very expensive habit if I dont flip any.

Did you take inlflation into account there? :D

As for me, over 100, hopefully under 200 but more likely bit over that too.. :O Most of the pieces I've owned only few weeks, some few months and only couple of pieces have been with me more then a year, and those seem to be keepers. Since I haven't sold any pieces I've owned more then a year since early 90s and I regret that so much that it hurts (it was Ploprof).

I don't know how much I've spent on straps, or on postage on sales, to be honest. It's a fairly rough measure, but it does help keep me honest with myself about what I'm spending. As I set it up pretty soon after I got into watches, it's pretty easy to maintain now. I'd have no chance trying to do it retroactively!

Oh, and I should add I currently have 11 watches in addition to the flipped multitudes.

I've just had to count the photos of the different watches I've owned and I counted about 84. I have had quite a few that I didn't get round to taking a picture of so I'll say at least 100

For the last year I've settled with my Speedmaster and a G-shock for work but in the last few weeks the bug has returned and I've brought about 5 watches :|

I'll probably only keep one of them though and the rest will end up in the sales corner, here we go again

    :)
