Without discussion on the warranty issues or impact on resale, etc, etc..........
Is there available or has anyone ever fitted a display back to a Rolex?

When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you.........
Interesting........
Chris has sorted out the availability bit
Now......
Has anyone on here ever fitted one?
Steve748 has one on his GMT.....Originally Posted by GIB984

For me Rolex and display-backs don't go together.

Got a new watch, divers watch it is, had to drown the bastard to get it!

The movements are just not finished for display purposes imo - while I always like the look of a mechanical movement I'd prefer a few others brands finishing on the rotors etc.
It's just a matter of time...
I've made this post a few years back.
This week I got a email from Antti Ronkko, a watchmaker from Finland
who have made a few display backs to Rolex. He ask me if I want one
as a gift and try out at my Explorer II. What can I say when I got
this very kind offer, of course yes. Today I got the display back
in my mail and here is how it looks.
So it´s just to pull all stuff together and put it at the case.
Ok, time for some surgery.
Side by side and the display back is a little thicker.
Display and orginal back case.
And the final results and it fits just so good as the orginal
back case, and it looks nice in my opinion. What do you think?
Looks really good, how much will they retail at?
He lists them on eBay, I've seen them sell for around EUR50 plus post :wink:Originally Posted by Chris_in_the_UK
That, to me, is a vast improvement! I know that their movements aren't the most elaborate or visually appealing but they are a darn site more interesting than their case backs.
How much are they Jocke, I wouldn't mind one on my Explorer II
I just selotape a bit of glad=wrap to the back of mine - instant low cost solution! :D
Never heard that one before, "gladwrap" :lol:Originally Posted by Josh B

You are absolutely right - they do look a lot more interesting and as rated to 300m it would seem capable of being used just as well as the steel backs - and I did like the back on the GMT 2535 and Aqua-Terras.
It's just a matter of time...
Rolex case backs predominantly are completely bland, with a bit of ingenuity used in the Deepsea, so to use crystal rears to show the movement can only be an aesthetic plus.
Yet for the purist it will be frowned upon as it is a non factory modification to the watch.
Also all the 'office watch experts' would have a hayday as the could then tell you your watch was fake as no Standard Rolex comes with an exhibition case rear. The fact they could not tell a correct Rolex movement from a Chinese quarts is besides the point.
A guy on another site I frequent is making some observation case rears, from full ports to part ‘open heart’ type rears, he is starting inexpensive to gauge interest by using Seiko auto models.
Some case rears are a work of art as standard, with intricate engravings and show off text, and I would never swap them for crystal. Also Omega gives another issue with the enamel red/blue anti tamper dot, swap them for crystal and you loose the dot.

Good point, the 2 of them look good.I know that their movements aren't the most elaborate or visually appealing but they are a darn site more interesting than their case backs.
I really dislike viewbacks especially on tool watches and the inclusion of such has stopped me buying some models in the past.
As for voluntarily putting one on a Rolex
Not the done thing old boy.
Cheers,
Neil.
prefer it with the clear case back on it, I know its a tool watch but how many people actually go diving with their rolex? so the WR rating could not really be an issue.
I wore mine when I went swimming in the Caribbean, not quite diving to a 100' but I could check to see if any water got in, which it didn't. :P
I bet a lot of subs have never seen water let alone been the sea........
Not a dig at WR, more the fact that a display back looks incongruous on a tool watch IMO whether it sees the sea or not.
Cheers,
Neil.
I just love some of these guys work!! Tell me you don't want one of these????

I like the idea on some watches but a divers watch is a tool - SO NO NOT WANTED.
Think it would suit a dress watch more.

How about water resistance protection. Is it somehow affected?

No overly spending for visual effect only.
It is a quality piece of engineering that in mý opinion does very well on display.
The caseback looks the part; no unsightly fat seal, not like a peakthrough porthole but a proper window and the price is right too.
Apart from taste or a purist ´not done´ there is little to ´fault´ and indeed a good show of authenticity for those who like that.
Thanks for sharing Jocke :!:
Yes; like for like, it's lower with a crystal back.Originally Posted by MKuni

...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!
I bet none have seen water ever, or ever will. As they are watches they don't have peepers ;)Originally Posted by Steve748

This soul cán now see the sea
Personally I like them as they make authentication soo much easier. How many people have purchased a moody Rolex's and later found out that they have been fitted with a bog standard ETA movement.
As for putting them on "tool watches", Panerai fitted display backs to the 6152-1 (Angelus) back in the 1950's so its hardly new.
Deep down I wish Rolex would offer it as an "optional extra".
Excellent pictures again Jocke.

That ´tool´ is a moot thing anyway. As is anything more than WR1.Originally Posted by Andyg

It looks amazing and I am tempted to get one but it just doesnt feel quite right..
That looks really good, does he have displaybacks also for other watches?
