    Shaving recommendation

Before I go any further, this post will be of no use at all to the DE fraternity who abide here with their love of sado-masochism, hot towels and badger massacre.

For we quattro users I introduce the stuff at the link below - I'm using the shaving cream and it is absolutely fantastic - highly recommended!!

As a fellow Quatro pansy I can thoroughly recommend Proraso Cutting Edge Shaving Gel With Aloe Vera

TBH I just use hot water. I find that Gel just clogs the razor up too much. Like you though I'm not into the lethal sport that some of the others on here indulge in.

Bic and smart price foam, it has a multitude of uses, it can unblock drains, stun dogs, and fill in the drafts between windows and Walls,

Had a look at the 4 razor things looked to fucking dangerous for me.

I don't do the DE shaving, a regular safety blade does me just fine BUT I do insist upon using a proper brush to put the gel/foam onto my face. Much better than rubbing it on with your hands.

+1 I tried and failed with DE recently (after a break of about 40 years), but the one thing I retained was a good lather applied with a good brush - much better IMO than any of the Gilette Gels.

Shaving oil I find to be best (King of Shaves seems to work really well).

That said, you'll never get a closer shave than one done on Fleet Street!...

I like KoS Shaving Oil but did find it to be a right pain as it clogged up the blades so quickly, whereas the Proraso Gel just never does.

Use a Gillette Fusion, with either Trumpers or DR Harris shaving soap/cream, applied with a Kent badger brush.

I'm always amused by how most of the forums I frequent have shaving threads!

I recently converted to a cheapo safety razor coupled with a decent brush and soap and won't be going back to the multi-blade jobbies!

    Re: Shaving recommendation

If you want an oil to "prime" the skin before using a foam lather I've found that King of Shaves Kinexium Shave Oil is excellent and significantly better than their other offerings. I'm using a DE razor so anything to help prevent nicks is a good idea in my opinion!

I survived my first DE shave this Saturday without bloodshed using a Muhle R89.

Took it very slow and quite enjoyed the whole ritual. Will give it another go later tonight.

    Re: Shaving recommendation

Gillette Fusion cartridges - £3.50 each.

Number of shaves per cartridge - 4

    Cost per shave = 87.5p

Cost per month, including canned gloop = approx. £27

Feather DE blades (the sharpest available, and one of the more expensive) = 21p each.

Number of shaves per blade = 3

    Cost per shave = 7p

Proper shaving cream or soap £15 (estimate, based on Truefitt & Hill cream). Lasts 3 months, minimum.

Cost per month of DE shaving = £7.10

Feeling of smug satisfaction = Priceless.

And I can justify buying surely one of the most exquisitely crafted DE razors ever made, the Feather All-Stainless:

And a nice badger brush. And still come out in front over the course of a year.

How can you tell if the Badger was from Kent, would an East Sussex immigrant not pass muster ?

+1 on George Trumpers Extract of LImes shaving soap.

Everyone knows that East Sussex badgers are inferior to those found in Kent!

    S**t - That's a £160 razor

  37. #37

    Re: Shaving recommendation

Around £130 - £140, but it's an exquisite piece of engineering and design. And paid for with less than 6 months of not buying Gillette Fusion blades (other overpriced and over-hyped multi blades are available).

It's an absolute pleasure to use. there's a proper review here:

    http://www.theshavingroom.co.uk/forum/s ... p?tid=5094

Unfortunately, the photos, which included some lovely macro shots of the blade location lugs, have been deleted. I actually paid £100 for mine, secondhand but virtually unused. I had a couple of other razors, one of which was a Merkur Futur, but I sold those as they didn't compare to the Feather.

    Regards

    Ian

Love the look of that feather and the fact that it's Stainless but I couldn't really justify paying that sort of money for trying out my first DE. Thanks for the review link, very detailed.

I'm going to have to be strong willed and not buy a load of shaving stuff and just keep practicing with what I've got  As the theory is meant to be saving money in the long run after the initial outlay for all the kit.

Unfortunately this strong will of not buying loads of stuff has not transferred to watch buying
