    Pet Insurance - Cautionary Tale

Last August I had picked up a Pet Insurance pamplet whilst visiting a branch of Argos and took it home to read. I had let the insurance on my two dachshunds lapse 18 months before as I thought the payments were a rip off and I would rather fund it myself should anything happen.

I read through the pamplet and the premiums were very reasonable so I mused for about 30 mins over whether to take out the cover and which level of cover. I ended up choosing Gold cover for both dogs meaning a cost of £17.43 per month in total. THANK GOODNESS I DID

A fortnight ago, Foxy my 4.5 year old bitch hurt her back. I don't know how she had done this but she was very quiet, but I didn't worry too much as she could walk about and advice gleaned on the internet said rest would cure it. I kept her rested hoping she would recover but by Friday morning her back legs weren't working properly so I took her to the vets.

Minster Vets in york were brilliant, after examining her they recommended I took her straight away to a specialist Vets 'Torrington Othropaedics' in Brighouse, West Yorkshire. They rang ahead, made an emergency appointment and lent me a travel cage for the 45 mile journey. When I arrived at Torrington Othropaedics they were superb. Very caring yet professional. The Vet Surgeon examined Foxy straight away and recommended a Myleogram, possibly surgery and a lengthy stay in their kennels. At this point I was in shock thinking they would say 'Just rest her' An estimate was handed to me which I didn't really look at and I instructed them to do what ever was necessary. It broke my heart to leave Foxy but I am a softie when it comes to the dogs. I filled in the paperwork and the estimate was for £3500!!! At this point I had no Idea of my cover level so I was a little concerned until I got home and got the Pet Insurance paperwork out.

Foxy had an Extruding disc and needed immediate surgery to stop her being paralysed permanently. She is making a great recovery and is walking normally, pooing, eating normally. My Argos Gold insurance covers upto £4000 so I am feeling very happy that I decided to take out the pet insurance last year. If I hadn't got the insurance I would have found the money somehow but there is enough upset and worry during an incident like this without money troubles as well. The bill from Torrington Othropaedics came to £3123 as she made such a good recovery a lengthy stay in kennels wasn't needed.

So my advice to any dog owners is to take out the insurance unless you can find £3k easily

    Pictures of Foxy post op:-

Jack :- poor little bugger was lost without his playmate - while I was in Brighouse he got in the window and took his frustration of being on his own all day, out on my window blinds

AAhhhh the poor wee thing. My Yorkie had a stroke at the start of the year, thankfully time and antibiotics were all that were required but tests which I could have chosen to be carried out were expensive.

My sympathies to you and your furball. Glad to hear she's making a sound recovery, hope she's back to playing asap.

For Londoners seeking professional & caring vets, please consider Kynance Vets off Gloucester Rd. I have no affiliation other than them other than them saving one of my dogs with immediate & tender care. Far better than the 5 other vets (Village Vet, etc.) that we used.

Also HSBC Pet insurance was great for us, however they're no longer offering new policies.
