Yep, forget the sauce, just good mature cheese,
Well, got home tonight and the misses had made a nice looking chicken stew, too bloomin hot to eat something like that though, anything at all in fact, god it's hot. Relented at 10pm with a bit of cheese on toast, save the stew for tomorrow. What a fantastic little snack, it's the king of simple, quick and easy meals, i say quick and easy, but for me it can be quite a mission, ritual in fact. Toast a couple of thick cut slices of grainy brown bread, add butter and marmite, then thick slices of good mature chedder, then on top of the cheese a thin coating of english mustard, under the grill and half way through melting a few drops of worcestershire, then when cheese is really melty and bubbling, take it out, squirt on some tommy ketchup and down the hatch, hunger and taste buds satisfied. Am i over complicating things?

Yep, forget the sauce, just good mature cheese,
Lightly toast a couple of slices of white bread and butter while hot with lashings of fresh butter and then copious amounts of Marmite. Then spreadable dairily and then toast until just off burnt :) Yummy !

Do Perrins still make the Worcestershire sauce/tomato ketchup combo sauce? That stuff was superb
"A man of little significance"
I'm going to be a heretic and say I've never had a cheese toastie in my life! Like WTF is a grill apart from a load of work, c'mon!
Give me the bints number mate and I'll get her sorted :)Originally Posted by GraniteQuarry

Lazy buggers. That's all I have to say.
Its good with a splash of Hendersons relish. aka Hendos.
Cheese on toast, simple and tasty
Don't be spoiling a classic snack with Marmshite
When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you.........
Two slices, in place of stew? Nah. Four required.
I like mine with a drizzle of HP sauce - Yum
it is the food of the gods...
i put a few thinly sliced mushrooms undermine on occasion and then do the whole lot under the grill
but for a quickie...bread in toaster...strong cheddar in microwave, ready at same time, spread butter on toast, spread cheese on top of that and bobs your proverbial
can't go wrong
I've not used marmite on mine before - just the standard cheese, no butter and a good spray of worcestershire. Nice :)
I have had 3 new cookers and the first meal on each was cheese on toast :D
As for the debate between Hendersons and Worcestershire sauces. I have tried both and prefer Hendersons. Used to only be available around Sheffield but I think now available a bit wider afield. It also has the advantage of being totally vegetarian. The other one has anchovies in the recipe so not veggie friendly.
One variation I like is with tabasco sauce.
Another is to take pitted olives, half them and place on bread under the cheese. Nice but perhaps not to everyone's taste.
Alex :)
you should try putting a dairylee* triangle on top of the cheese......awesome!!!!! put it on the same time as the normal cheese.....
*other types of spreadable cheeses are available from tesco's*
*other supermarkets* also sell spreadable cheese
*although not as cheap :D
Here here. Hendos is the king of sauces. Pretty much whatever you add it to becomes better. I have even got the Greek girlfriend's family using Hendos with their homemade olive oil as a salad dressing.Originally Posted by chaplad

+1. Much better than that worcestershire filth :wink:Originally Posted by chaplad
Didn't Thoreau say "Simplify, simplify"? Or was it Mystic Meg? Either way I go bread/good cheese/hendos. Deliciously simple. Simpliciously so.
The trick is to toast only one side of the bread under the grill, lightly butter the untoasted side then pop the cheese on that side too and grill it. Lotsa L&P sauce, and black pepper!
My variation is put some on thinly sliced tomato before the cheese, L&P it, add the cheese then grill and add the L&P again just as it's a-bubblin'!!

Cheese on toast + pickled beetroot is the dogs danglies
Now I have to go and track down some Henderson's Relish.
I just have white bread, toasted on one side, thick cheddar on the other, grill, eat with branston.
If I want a full meal a few skippers under the cheese and some toms over.
Should this go in the tattoo fail thread?
has to be grated cheese though to ensure an even melt
Right well I moved on from plain ole' Cheese on toast and this is THE recipe: Take a dessert bowl and fill one third with Tortilla chips shred a loads of sharp cheese then another thick layer of Tortilla chips and again the grated cheese. Then my preference is a handful of black olives and into the microwave on full power for a minute and a half. Remove and distribute a good splash of Tabasco in all directions SORTED :D
MORE CHEESE GROMMIT :bom:

Damn, now gotta go to waitrose on way home for bag of tortillas!
Yep, Lynn loves it in her Bloody Mary's. :)Originally Posted by joepotts7

Oh, and cheese on toast is much better made with a good French cheese like Camembert or Brie. :D

I'd hate to be with you when you're on your own.
I think the OP had it almost perfect - until he spoiled it all with tomato ketchup. Daddies sauce, yes.... ketchup no.
All sound delish guy's but one essential for me is thinly sliced onions, under the cheese  L&P on top
