Here, here!
I have two Miyotas and am looking at Frankening a Swiss one after Christmas. They're really a great little watch, and who can fault the prices :D
Judging by the prices of these vintage Explorers. Sheesh!
Even if a genuine Rolex was in my budget, which it's not, I would be torn. I'd probably want to spend the money on a Sea-Dweller. I dislike the markers and flat crystals on the new Explorers and much prefer the 1016 look, which the Zeno thankfully provides.
I have a Swiss Zeno on order from Eddie (already shipped I see!) on behalf of my wife or some other family Christmas grabbag giver, and can hardly wait, since I won't see it until then. I hope that once I put it on that I don't get the urge to go climb a mountain or anything like that. ;-)

All this talking about the Explorer made me wear the Zegarek Zubrow (ex-Zeno Explorer) tonight ... :D

I sold mine on! Perhaps I should have kept it?

Merry Christmas Tom !
Very nice looking Watch. I have been thinking about getting one myself, but have been somewhat concerned about the small size since I now have mainly 40mm plus Watches. Does the Watch wear bigger than it really is ? Is it easy to read ?

David
Merry Christmas to you too!Originally Posted by Kaiser

I think the dial is easy to read but I'm not one to have problems reading the time from any watch as long as I wear my glasses.
I always liked the Explorer style but the size worred me too. The large 20mm lugs help because that too makes the watch wear bigger than it is. It's a thick cased watch as well.
We WIS have so many watches anyway. If any of us feels like going large or small it's merely a trip to the watch box, so no concerns for me. ;-)
Tom,
That's a nice wrist shot, a little hairy, but it shows the bezel crown and domed crystal very well.

Merry Xmas Tom. A nice day for a new watch.

Thanks Tom. I forgot to ask, is that the Miyota, or ETA version that you have ?

David
ETA. Nothing against Miyota but I prefer Swiss.Originally Posted by Kaiser

I thought about this.....
now this...
I think that I have a touch of the watchaholic A.D.D. ....
Is that strap in the bottom pic off of a Hamilton? Perhaps orginally from a Khaki Navy Gmt? I saw one of those straps in person and photos never do them justice.
Tom, is the strap in the bottom picture wider than 20 mm? I think it is too wide for the watch ... the 20mm lugs are generous for the ZEX case size, and anything wider is in danger of being reminiscent of a cuff bracelet. :(

Martin ("Crusader")
I thought that *I* was picky. It's a Poljot 20mm leather flieger strap. It's meant for 20mm lug watches but yes it flares out a tad just under the lugs. Doesn't bother me but I'm sad that you don't like it.Originally Posted by Crusader
You know me though. I can't keep these things static for long and will likely change it to something else in short order.
Poljot, and it's a REALLY nice strap. It has these creases which are somehow pressed into the leather. I have another just like it. I put a deployment on this one and have another which still sports the Poljot buckle.Originally Posted by Grath
I first felt one on a Poljot Navigator manual wind alarm which I used to own, and loved the strap so much that I ordered 2 of these straps from Frank at russiansouvenirs.com after I sold off that watch.
Nothing beats the 22mm Italian leather strap which is on the 45mm Poljot Aviator. THAT strap is the Master.
Too bad the screw down crown on that Poljot is messed up....
Okay, now it's on an IWI ridged silicon rubber strap, similar in style to the leather one but without the outward flare after the lugs.
I'll probably end up back on bracelet before the day is out. :?

That's it! I'm done! I had it on the NATO and put it on the leather and the other strap because the wife said the nylon made the watch look "cheap". To hell with her. She doesn't know squat. Why oh why would I take my wife's opinion on that? I prefer it on either the bracelet or some sort of nylon. It's how this type of watch was meant to be worn.
So, for now it's on a zulu, and I can change it to a NATO or a Rhino just as easily. The other straps made it look too dressy and that's NOT why I bought this watch. I fell for it's utilitarian appeal and the bracelet or nylon suits that purpose, look, & feel.
Whew. I feel better now.
Must be an American thuing ... Olongapos are the same. No European would be seen dead, wearing stuff like that. :twisted:Originally Posted by Crusader

But seriously, the strap which I had on there falls way short of any cuff bracelet I ever saw. Besides, it's a Russian strap. ;-)
Nylon is an excellent choice for the ZEX, and indeed for most any (tool) watch. :D
Mine lives on a 20mm Waterborne, or, for dressing up, on a 20mm US Beefy strap. I thought the Rhino was a tad too thick for the watch, but I'll try again later today. Sadly, the orange Rhino did not go well with the colors of the Marathon dial and hands ... should try a gray or black one.

I like ZEX as shorthand for the watch, consider that adopted!Originally Posted by Crusader
I have 2, one of which lives on the bracelet, the other switches between straps. It works well on NATOs, and OK on a Zulu, and on a variety of leather straps (put it on a brown Bund last night and am quite happy with the look). Very versatile watch, IMHO, the ZEX.

I like the new short term too ... the long version made it sound like a badly made Polish tank. :roll:Originally Posted by Dave E

The Explorer is a lovely watch, mine is the Miyota and at £80 from Eddie is a real deal. It has a class well beyond its price (I guess that's likely given what it's styled on!) especially when kept on the bracelet. I have tried it on Rally, Carbon, Rhino, Nato Bond but still think the bracelet does it better.
Half Brothers:
My ETE powered arrived from Eddie this morning (eventually to become a project watch), but I thought I'd take a pic of the two together. The bracelet's coming off the Miyota powered now to be replaced with a rubber strap.

Worlock,
Nice pics of the new Zeno Explorer. I've been considering one, but wondered what the bracelet's clasp looks like.
Do you happen to have any pictures of the OTHER side of the bracelet?
This has got me curious. When you add that little extra touch by winding and setting a watch before you ship it, do you set it to your timezone, or the time zone of the recepient?Originally Posted by swanbourne

If I can remember the timezone without having to check, I'll set it to the timezone of the country although with a mechanical watch, it's probably wound down by the time it arrives.Originally Posted by rfrazier

That's precisely the view I've been wondering about!
Very nice photo, and shows that the ZEX has a very appropriate-looking bracelet (to my eye, at least).
