Have adverts ever caused you to avoid a product?

Pottering around the house today and put the TV on for a bit of background and sat through the rather sick inducing new Halifax "Just call my name and I'll be there" advert.

    Arrggghhhhh....

I haven't bought Gillette products for years either, couldn't stand the Americanised good looking gal jumps into a good looking guy's arms "Gillette, the best a man can get" bollox...

Re: Have adverts ever caused you to avoid a product?

Any product or service that uses squeaky voices, cartoon/animated characters, and soft toys to advertise, I give a wide berth.

I make a point of not buying the product, as all that nonsense annoys the hell out of me

Supposedly the consumer is completely dumb nowadays, at least that's how they must see us

I find the PP " .... save it for the next generation " rubbish advert to be so very annoying ... and it has put me off ever buying a new PP watch - if and when my Premium Bonds come up  . However, now I feel obliged to consider buying a used or a vintage model - just to prove that the next generation decided not to keep it.

That's where advertisers are clever though isn't it? You may never knowingly have bought anything because of an advert, but i'll bet a large amount that your subconscious has! Maybe not the larger, heart felt purchases, but on a day to day basis for sure.

For me, I don't watch adverts. Thats ciggy/Tea/Beer/wine getting time  .

Re: Have adverts ever caused you to avoid a product?

Pet hate is service companies that spend huge amounts of money advertising how they care about me as a customer and are with me every step of the way, etc, etc Then they go on to mess things up in some way and deliver pathetic after sales service.

Prime culprits in my opinion are:

BA: Stranding me at the wrong airport, cancelling flights, incapable of getting my luggage to me, telling me a different set of lies each time I phone them :x
BT: Losing a weeks worth of my work Emails  , connecting my broadband line to the wrong house but sending me the bill, delivering the worlds slowest broadband by not routing things through the nearest exchange
RBS: Transferring direct debits three days early causing me to go into overdraft, crap accounts, closed local branch, I could go on and on about them.... :x
Halifax / BoS: Crap accounts, awful staff at local branch :(
Energy companies: Overcharging bandits, dodgy direct debit tactics :x
Any financial advisor I've ever met: Total chancers every one :x :x :x

I especially hate it when companies phone me up later to go through some telephone customer satisfaction survey that asks a load of asinine questions designed not reveal any of the things I want to complain about :x .

Watch related I hate the Bremont advertising, just too far over the top for me and as for the Patek Phillipe smirking next generation I just want to slap them.

The Halifax ads where for some inexplicable reason, the staff seem to be running a pirate radio station in their lunch break. Truly risible and enough to put me off their stuff for life

Funnily enough we had to rate a bunch of tv ads as part of the marketing module of the MBA masterclasses I attended last year. The entire class scored the Halifax ads as zeros!

Go Compare & We Buy Any Car.com

I record everything and fast forward through the ads, so only get the short contact lens / aftershave / car ads sponsoring the show which is bad enough

They change often, but there was one of their adverts with a horn in it, which used to scare the poo out of me. It made me pay attention, but only because I thought someone was about to crash in to me.

If celebrity endorsement falls in this category, then almost any high end watch brand I can think of

I usually get thoroughly annoyed by a lot of adverts and swear not to buy anything from them but I often forget about it in a few days or weeks although I really try to hold a grudge

Lawyers4u or some other no win, no fee law firm with the actor who is best known as being a hard man on Eastenders with a number of murders to his credit.

Then in the ad he states 'we are lawyers for you' so either he has qualified since leaving Eastenders or this law firm is happy with mistruths. Not the first law firm I would choose.

I'll bet those ads are proving to be effective, they've been running a while and have yet to be pulled. What's more of a worry is if the latest crop of newly trained MBA marketing masters rating effective campaigns as zeros whilst not knowing the impact of the ads on the brand's target consumer.

The thing with the old 'Smash' adverts was that they were genuinely funny and that got the marketing message across. Foul product brilliantly marketed! :)

Hate the Churchill car insurance ads. Then, after a price comparison search, I ended up insuring with them. Told the bloke on the phone who said he'd heard the story many times.

Yeah - 'We buy anycar.....dot com!'.

Can't STAND that advert and would never use them. However, as an advert it does its job brilliantly as you certainly remember the product it's trying to sell! :)

The latest Guinness ad is crap

The Richard Hammond and Alan Hansen ads for Morrisons made me swear at the telly. Was that campaign aimed at trying to get more men in the store by thinking these two twats are cool  or women thinking they're cute ?

Any 'celebrity' endorsement for mundane stuff gets my goat. I feel embarrassed for them

Jenson Button with his dandruff problem ?   Jenson Button with his Tag on the podium 8) 8)

Having said that, almost any celebrity endorsement makes me want to puke - it's those fake smiles, it's having Iceland turkey drumsticks on the yacht in Monaco, it's the latest big thing being used up before they become a has been.

Loved it as well! The John Smith's Bitter advert (diving into the pool) was the one that had everyone in our house in stitches.

For some reason, this thread is making me feel really nostalgic - JR Hartley (Yellow pages), late Frank Muir (Fruit and Nut) and even the wee Tetley man and the Cadbury's Flake girl.

However, back on theme - you've been tango-ed! Arghhhhhh
