Arctic roll is still available - that was a firm favourite
I'm not sure why, but recently I've been thinking back to my school dinners with a sense of fondness. I'm of an age when they were probably much better quality than they are these days (and Public school probably helped too) ;)
However, my favourites on the menu were... jam and coconut sponge, with custard; chocolate sponge, with custard; treacle sponge, with custard; lemon meringue pie. :)
You've probably noticed a bit of a pattern here and yes, I was a bit of a porker as a child. :)
Anyone else have strange cravings for their school dinners of yesteryore??

If you'd been to my school you wouldn't be looking back with fondness.
It was boiled to death veg and gristly meat.
There's a reason why the food sucked and we never went back….
and warn our kids about potential food poisoning…
Nothing bar jam roly-poly beat chocolate concrete. Wonderful stuff.
If you're in or close to London you could always try here - School Dinners  (may be NSFW)
Warning - May not actually be representative of what school or the dinners was really like!
I really miss the rock hard jam flapjack and custard i used to get in my junior school.
I have never came across that kind of flapjack since.
Ah that green shade of liver! Apart from that I remember flicking tapioca on the ceiling - wonder if it's still there :D

As I noted above, chocolate concrete. Two posts about the same pudding but it's worth it. :)Originally Posted by bebop7
Strangely enough, in the 20-odd years since I last had a school dinner, I've not once felt compelled to knock myself up any spam fritters, followed by "yoghurt & biscuit"
Well, with a menu like that - I'm not surprised! :DOriginally Posted by Bloobird
The sad thing is, those were the most memorable of the dishes on offer. It was the pre-Jamie Oliver era, after all!Originally Posted by The Hack
You say school dinners, but you talk about puddings (or 'afters' as we called them at the time). Might I suggest: http://www.puddingclub.com/ ?
Thought it was all utter dogturd. I have never missed it.

does anyone remember turkey twizzlers? Pretty sure Jamie Oliver got them banned :(
Definitely :D
The only dish I remember is that Scottish classic "Stovies" , which is quite nice if done properly, unfortunately my school couldn't do it properly. To compound matters it was served up in portions of 12kg per plate and our PE teacher (who was drummed out of the SS for cruelty) made sure that we ate every last morsel.
Rosehip Syrup - I still have no real idea of its function in society nor have I encountered it since primary school.
I quite liked "frogspawn" (probably some industrial grade variation on a theme of semolina) but for some reason I remember puddings better than the main courses although mashed potato that was either dry or served as a form of thin soup (but never available at any stage in-between) and miraculously flavourless khaki peas featured as a recurring motif.
I have far happier memories of field rations in later life.
Ah how easy it would to eulogise about school dinners.
Or would have been if I was at a posh public school - the crappy school I went to, well,
the smell of sewerage coming from the stuff we were told was 'cabbage' still haunts me.And the mash; it consisted of lumps a almost grey porridgy stuff mixed with water. No cream, no butter, no seasoning.
I almost became bulemic by accident.
Thankyou Rugeley school for causing such harm to children- Bleeeuuuuch
You aren't Oliver Twist are you??! :DOriginally Posted by sestrel
Strangley- I did play Oliver at that school. Now i think about it was probably the same workhouse cook
"Fondly reminiscing about school dinners...is that weird??"

We used to get a slap for not using a pudding fork and a spoon at table.............Sigh
memories of people who could turn good food into s**t without eating it first.

That awful 'tapioca' sh*te. Like half cooked horse glue but without the appeal.
They used to give us water from aluminium jugs too- alzheimers all round then. I cannot describe quite the extent how I hated school!
My school dinnaz were equally vomitous. The food was from the second world war despite being 30-odd years after the event. Root vegetable boiled until they were clear, plates of meat so blubbery I'd swear it was from a whale, and puddings made of sodden newspaper - stodgy and grey. I well remember dry-retching at tepid, milky semolina pudding with a skin thick enough to line a submarine, and a smell that suggested the milk was on the turn, way back when.Originally Posted by sestrel
Some time ago I found my 2ndary school's website and they post the menu up each week (and email it to everyone's Internet). Aubergine fricassee, Goan curries, rump steak... of course, it might all be terribly cooked, but it reads like a menu at Peterhouse!
...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!
Worst memory of school dinners was boiled white fish (undetermined type), congealed parsley sauce (maybe parsley but could ahve just been green bits of paper), lumpy mashed potato and mushy peas. Vile stuff
Time has probably improved my memory of them but overall not too bad. I'd eat almost anything, even as a child, coupled with the fact, if you didn't eat what was put in front of you, you went hungry. You soon get stuck in.
Only two things i couldn't stomach was the ubiquitously awful semolina and, did anyone else have this, cold Yorkshire, with golden syrup ? It was tough as anything and I couldn't get my head around sweet and savoury together. Yeuch!!
Mine were consistantly disgusting. Still makes me feel ill when I think about them ! :pukeleft:
