I suspect the servers are so busy they can't verify the install (or whatever that is in proper geek speak).

Well, it seems to running okay so far on my 3GS.

It took about 30mins to install the new software. But it's taken the last hour or so to copy across my apps and tunes. :?

I just discovered that there is also an 800mb update to OSX. This includes, amongst other things, enabling iCloud on your Mac.

    Re: IOS5

I plugged into iTunes at about 6pm. The download took 19 minutes, and it took less than an hour in total. It's nice when stuff just works.

Now, I can get the camera from the lock screen, I can see they've done something with music and videos, and, er, otherwise it all looks pretty much the same.

    BTW, is a 3200 a bit like a BSOD?

Pretty much but it plays Whale Song and then makes you a decaff soy latte and says that you look great, all for a very reasonable $85 per error.

The best things that I've found with iOS5 so far?

Find my iPhone app now works on my 3GS (and my Mac, once the latest software update is installed).
And, you can now add your own custom alert tones (at long, fecking last!)

    Re: IOS5

Blimey initially a 7 hour download. Then 3 hours and now down to 84 mins. I only hope it fixes the fecking ‘Charging is not supported with this accessory’ bug from the last update with my 3GS. The last time none of my proper Apple cables or chargers worked yet I eventually found a cheap Lupo USB power wart I have worked. That bug really racks me off!

That's no "bug". Sounds like you have a physically damaged Apple connector. I've had no problems connecting anything to my 3GS.

Want to bet? You try searching for the fault on google and see. There is nothing wrong with my connector as I can literally leave the cable in and switch chargers and it will work. Sometimes a reset with the charger in fixes things. No jiggling or fiddling with the cable at all in these cases.

^ Some third-party cases can cause this behaviour. No idea how it senses a problem with a case but it does !

Anyone know how to use an inactive mobile me email address for icloud? I used to have mobile me a few years ago but when I'm asked to setup a new email, its saying it is already allocated (and the one I'd use would just be me)

    Re: IOS5

I tried installing the Apple TV update last night, it took 2 hours to download and failed to install. This morning it took 3 minutes :) I couldn't get Airplay to work with Real Racing 2 HD so I'll try that again tonight.

Same thing with OS X 10.7.2. I tried downloading it last night and it was incredibly slow. This morning I downloaded the combo update in ~10 minutes. It's installed now and I'm currently downloading updates for the Lion Recovery, iPhoto and Aperture.

Change your iTunes ID to that email address instead of a single word maybe?

I've got a mobileme account but my apple ID is a different address, probably like a lot of people who subscribed to apple long before mobileme.

Apple doesn't let you merge accounts. In the end, I've just decided to ditch the mobileme account and create a new me.com email address from my apple ID account. The extra mobileme features will be switched off soon, so I'd better get used to life without idisk anyway.

From what I've read in a few places I seem to have been pretty lucky last night.

Got it all downloaded and installed on my phone 4 first time, within 30 minutes around 7pm.

The ability to open new Safai windows in the background is making me happiest so far. SImple pleasures...

    Re: IOS5

iphone 3GS and ipad done. Two ipod touches and an iphone 4 to go.

So far my experience is that the update goes through but not quite fully automated. I find when it gets to the installing app part it will sit there forever. When I check the device it says the restore is complete. I then can go through on the device the icloud etc setup until it says ready to use. Once done I unplug and re plug in the device. The PC will flag up the restore failed in some way. I then get prompted to carry on the restore. This gets all the apps, music and videos back on. At that point it is back to normal though I have tended to do a final test un-plug and re-plug to make sure. Once past all that things work just like before.

Safari with tabs on the ipad is a big win for me.

When it gets to the "Installing apps" stage, just leave it to do its thing. It may take a while, but it will move on from there.

    Re: IOS5

I have both our iPads updated now - an iPad and an ipad2 (guess which one's mine :) ).

The upgrade was pretty smooth - took about an hour to download and maybe 20 minutes to install.

Having used it for a day, three things stand out for me:

    1. iCloud works very slickly. Sync from Mac-iPad-PC works well and easily. There is no sync (or workaround that I can see) to any Android device. I wonder why? :)

    2. The multitask gestures are my favourite part of the new interface. Which is great, because I have the iPad2 and they don't work on the iPad.

    3. The new notifications system bears a striking similarity to Android and works very well. Surely a patent infringement lawsuit is on the way from someone?

Like has been said it is still there. Though I found myself opening the bookmarks more.

Out of the 5 iOS devices we have only the ipod touch 4th gen ran through start to finish unaided. All the rest I had to manually plug and unplug to continue. All are fine now though

    Re: IOS5

    iOS 5 is boom!

I like the iMessage feature and the notification bar. Double tap camera is good. There must surely be lots of other features that we'll all discover (and android will copy!).

Not for me it isn't. It still works on my iPhone but not on my iPad.

Anyone being annoyed by Newstand and how it can't be removed or hidden in a folder then help is at hand.

    1. Place the newstand app next to 2 other app icons (for convenience in the next step).
    2. Drag one of the other icons onto the other to create a folder
    3. Quickly drag newstand onto the newly created folder.
    4. Pump fist :D :D

You've got to be really quick - http://www.intomobile.com/2011/10/14...-modification/

And if you are wondering what happens when you try to open Newstand (a glorified folder) inside a folder - iOS throws a wobbly and shuts down in a huff.

Will probably be [s:3uotm3l8]fixed[/s:3uotm3l8] broken in the next update.

I had a very similar notification system on my jailbroken iPhone before Android got there. I believe Apple recruited one of the developers of the jailbreak app.
