    Pam hommages - what's your preference ?

With the debate raging here and elsewhere regarding Pam's SE's.

I like the Pam style, but I could never afford one and given the negative vibes of late it has somewhat tarnished the brand for me.

Where or what do you guys think is a better alternative ?

I'd be very glad to have your thoughts and pics if possible.

I'd also be grateful if we could leave the fighting on the other thread

I like the ones made by the Richemont group, but they are very pricey. They are putting cool in-house movements in the more expensive ones.

This one is pretty good and with a spec to match as well.

If you want a Radiomir style (ie. without the crown guard) Eddie's PRS20 cannot be bettered. If you're after a Luminor style (with the crown guard) , Getat have a good reputation and good communication.

Radiomir style definitely and in reality one of Eddies PRS20's as that is quality and affordable.

The quality of the PRS-20 is hard to beat for the money.

Panerai's 'boutique' copies of its own watches are, sadly, poor. Well, internally anyway. :D

I've been impressed by the Getats I've handled. Once upgraded with sapphire and superlume dial, and with a decent strap fitted, they are very nice watches.

Re: Pam hommages - what's your preference ?

    See my custom made Getat

Very good quality for the price. Even the strap is amazing.

If you want a Radiomir, PRS20 is an excellent watch. My only gripe with Radiomirs is that the lug screws keep coming off.

    Vollmer U5

Is not bad. California dial and Swiss ETA 2824 I think.

Not as pretty as the PRS20 a bit more utilitarian.

Mine has a nice new customs trap from Scott!

    No pics yet

There do other homage watches too. Not sure what their affiliation to Getat is but choice is greater here.
FYI - there is loads of them, cheaper, on the bay.

I have yet to find anything that feels as right as a True Panerai, what is really strange is the Panerai bashers that buy homages!

Re: Pam hommages - what's your preference ?

Despite the latest panerai debacle, it's true that nothing feels as a real pam does. I allways thought that they were overpriced - and from an objective point of view they are - but as soon as you pick one up, strap it on and take a good look, you know it's a whole different league than all the hommages. At least that is my impression and made me decide to take the plunge and buy a gen 111 F-series.

I have had a great bunch of hommages and they all left me unsatisfied at the end, besides the ones that a bought from Davidsen. All his watches, with chinese and swiss movements, are of very good quality, and I have enjoyed wearing them (still thinking of buying one soon from him again). It's a bit difficult to deal with him as his English is limited (he is from Hong Kong) so you must be very specific with your questions, and you can only pay with moneyorder or moneygram. On the other hand he ships very fast and his service is great. Oh, and he doesn't have a website, only photobucket.

I've never have tried the prs-20, but it looks great and from my experience with other watches from Eddie I expect it to be a wonderful watch.

I personally wouldn't go with Getat and all the other chinese sellers. I've had them, in loads, and I've never liked them that much. If you want a really nice alternative to a Panerai go with the prs-20 or check out Davidsen.

Or don't. Known to make watches which infringe Panerai's copyright. Counterfeiter, in my book.

Re: Pam hommages - what's your preference ?

I've had a PRS20 and a Getat, the PRS20 was better in every way (as you would expect, given the price differential) apart from the wire lugs which were angled on the Getat and made the watch more comfortable to wear.

I wish they did come up for sale, as I'd like one but haven't seen one for ages!

I can find two so far this year- does that count as "occasionally"? :D admittedly, one of them was mine.

Another alternative is Magrette. Had a pvd one for a while, nice watches. A bit shaped like the vintage luminors, but they wear smaller.

Now that is very cool, never seen one of those before. Looks like I am going to scanning sc for a while.

Re: Pam hommages - what's your preference ?

I have this very nice JOA homage. The workmanship looks fine and to most people it is "as good as" my Panerai (looking at this week's Panerai-bashing threads, it may be better than my Panerai). I thought it would scratch the itch and save me some cash. I wanted the best quality homage I could get and paid significantly more than most of the homages I could see around. In the end of course, I did what most people do and eventually got the Panerai I wanted a copy of (the lovely PAM55), so it was a rather expensive exercise! This JOA may appear on SC some time soon as I always grab the PAM at the weekend...but at least you can see what's inside it...
