    Pilot Watches

I am hankering after a big, basic faced pilot.

Business has not been kind to me this year, so the IWC is well out of range.

At the other end of the scale is the Parnis. Is it worth £50 or leave well alone?

    Fortis Flieger maybe?

    Big Pilot Parnis Grey :D

    Re: Pilot Watches

I am in a similar boat currently, can't afford an IWC, but I didn't really want to dip to Parnis level.

There are plenty of midrange choices, most under £500 IIRC, Stowa, Steinhart, Laco, Archimede or Glycine.

I made a thread about it last week, have an nose through:

Have a look at the Christopher Ward C8. The Vintage edition is fairly new but both versions are great imo. I love the design and slim profile. For £365, you can't go wrong. If you have the wrists, the C11 is worth a look too.

Be patient and a quality pilot watch will turn up on SC.

The Fortis mentioned above is just one example.

Tried on a Hamilton Khaki, nice watch, right size, just not what I was really looking for.

Found an Aristo B-Uhr XL, but the shop was closed, think I will wait until I get back to Bahrain and try for that one.

Happy with this one, an Archimede XLA.
Quite big at 45mm, but extremely legible.
No date on this one, which suits me as the dial looks even cleaner.
Can't fault the quality, and I should wear it more I suppose.

Since the OP mentioned the IWC perhaps the Speedbird III is worth a look? The bracelet is superb but it looks good on leather too.

    Re: Pilot Watches

I couldn't decide, so I built my own

    Some very HURRIED dirty shots.....................

Started with a beaten up ETA powered auto, that still kept great time. Ordered a case off ROUHELENA on the bay.
cases are great quality for the cost, but way too shiney  so fully brushed and just the finish I was after!

The bezel rotates, the HUGE onion crown is a screw lock, and the strap bars are screw in, the crystal is Saphire

The dial came from a batch procured from Noah Fuller (RIP) and had been kicking around long enough to get that
'USED' look :? hands also from Helena, and stripped to base metal, now ready for some aged lume, coming up!

I made a band from an old army canteen leather strap and a buckle from the spares box, et VIOLA!

I kinda like it, Ratty, Tatty, and it gets worn a lot, in fact the more I wear it the better it looks IMHO

Have a go, be different, and make your own design, this cost me around €150 all in!

I thought the Tourbys linked from RickChard's thread looked really good. Would be interested to hear if anyone has any experience with them.

Wear a skirt and after happy hour just wander into any hotel bar that airline crews frequent.

    Alternatively, buy a Torgoen T-10.

Not sure how you feel about Zenith, but put this on your 'Watch List' as it looks a cracker :)

Wow, OK i want to build my own watch now. :bounce:
Damn, it must be very satisfying to wear something you built. The fact that it keeps good time is just an added bonus really :D

On topic, Steinhart have good looking and well priced Flieger Uhren as the Germans say.

I would recommend Archimede. Good prices, good pieces and good customer service. They've actually got their own forum and they answer queries promptly.

    Here's mine:
    Pilot LE 50/90

and one I sold awhile back:
    Pilot PVD

    Re: Pilot Watches

To scratch the itch I spent £65 off the bay on a Parnis.

To be honest for £65 I am quite happy with it. It has the build quality of a French rather than German car, but hay ho.

I have done a crude time check over the last day and a half, two nights spend by the side of the laptop and a day on my wrist and either it has gained 20 seconds or the internet clock has slowed.

All in all a result and it has some wrist time.
