Sorry to hear that, good luck with the OP.For pain relief try alcohol.
Kidney stones – those of you that have had them will empathise, those of you that haven’t had them don’t know how lucky you are.
This weekend has all but been written off due to the pesky blighter moving around. One minute I’m fine, the next minute a gibbering wreck unable to do anything but moan in the largest font size I can find and writhe on the floor / bed / settee in absolute agony; fortunately prescription painkillers have stopped me throwing myself out of my bungalow’s bedroom window thus far but I wish the bloody thing would find somewhere comfortable to rest and stop wriggling about.
A month ago I took my wife to Amsterdam for a city break when it first decided to make an appearance. I crawled off the aircraft and into Schiphol’s medical centre where the staff were brilliant. Morphine, diclofenac, three hours and £50 later we started our holiday but on return to the UK the stone still decided to grumble. Oh how lucky I am that the company I work for has private medical insurance but how can I put up with this until I’m operated on next Friday?
Somebody out there must have been through the same, what did you do to keep the pain levels down?
Sorry to hear that, good luck with the OP.For pain relief try alcohol.
Mine took a couple of weeks to come out by itself, helped on it's way by gallons of water. I still remember the sheer relief when the little bandit came out.
My previous benchmarks for pain were a dental root infection and torn knee liganments but a kindney stone was by far the most painful thing I've experienced.
Hope the op resolves things for you
all the best#

I've been poleaxed by the little soandsos a couple of times.
If I was offered the option to be free from the fear of them forever in exchange for a vasecotmy without anasthetic - I'd jump at the vasectomy. I really would.

I have suffered with these blighters for the past 25 years.
I have had Lithotripsy on several occasions to shatter the buggers. The 1st time I had them the doc told
me the pain is as near as a fella will get to the pain of childbirth  all I know is they are excruciating.
If I get a twinge I drink a mixture of good olive oil and freshly squeezed lemon juice at a ratio of 2-1, it tastes
terrible but I find it does help in passing the smaller ones.
The last one I expelled looked like an 8mm dia. hedgehog.
For those of you that have never suffered, I wish you continued good health, for those that have, you have my
deepest sympathy.
As for painkillers.......... the only thing that has ever worked for me is MORPHINE  shame you can't get it over the counter !!!
Brian.
If you are having colic due to stone in the ureter do NOT do what the poster above says and drink lots of water. This will not hasten the passage of the stone but will greatly increase the pain. The normal resting pressure in the kidney is 3cm water but during an acute attack of colic it can rise to 70cm water, why increase the pressure by trying to pass even more fluid through a tube the diameter of which has been effectively reduced by partial obstruction by a stone. Drinking lots to aid passage of a stone is advice which is even given by some doctors but it is wrong. As well as painkillers have you been prescribed an alpha blocker such as Tamsulosin? If not get your gp to give you some as it will help pain and stone passage.
Because of those little buggers, yesterdays scheduled Klitschko fight I was looking forward to was cancelled...
Had a biggie 5 years ago which occurred on holiday, that was a bit of a bugger. The second was a few months ago, half the size and was only a couple hours of pain, spent the next few days waiting for the little minx to GTF out of the bladder. I've not had a real screamer yet, my dad did once and said he'd happily have died at the time LOL.
Absolute joy aren't they
Morphine and lots of it!
I drink at Least a litre of water everyday now.
Never had one, and reading this thread my right kidney is starting to hurt  Though I assume that they are located in the bladder if I understand the thread correctly.
Does it have to be water or will plenty of any drink do?Originally Posted by duffy78
I've had the pleasure two times so far. The first ended with me passing them in the hospital - the pain was almost all-consuming.
Ditto the advice on drinking water - I tried that to help and all it ended up doing was adding to the overall experience.
My thoughts, sympathy and hopes for a speedy recovery are with you.
Kidney stones are proof that the devil exists in my eyes!
Ouch! Had them a few years back and had to endure a drive back from Bristol to London in agony. Lots of pain killers later from the GP and lots of water and it passed.
I drink more water now, dont want that to happen again.
The spiky little f**kers form in the kidneys and you don't feel them, the big pain is when they travel down a pipe to the bladder - that's the OMG I'm going to die bit - can take a couple hours or a few days. Once they drop into the bladder it's not so bad: just a dull pain, a desire to piss all the time and a nice red urine. After a while they kindly come up the old fella and next thing you know there's a wee rock lying in the bottom of the WC. And relax for a year or two LOL.Originally Posted by clockwatcher

They sound awful. Where exactly is the pain? Stomach or groin area?
what causes them?
Lower-back/side for me, general area of the kidneys. The tube they go from kidney to bladder isn't that long, but it's long enough, going down that motherfunky is the problem!Originally Posted by scarto
No.4 here: Ureter
Excess minerals in the waterworks, often diet related. Drinking a couple litres of H2O a day helps flush the crap out (and is a good thing in general), but takes a bit of discipline :twisted:Originally Posted by Middo
Kidney Stones
The pain will initially be in the loin area ie mid back to one side of the spine at about the level of the lower ribs or just a bit lower. As the stone passes along the ureter which is the tube that connects the kidney to the bladder the pain will move around to lower abdomen and groin. It may radiates into testes and willy. The desire to pee frequently and bleeding is when the stone is in the last bit of the ureter as it passes obliquely through the wall of the bladder. Once the stone is in the bladder it will pass quite freely out as the urethra from bladder to outside is much larger calibre than ureter from kidney to bladder.
just spent a weekend in hospital with these the pain is excruciating. and into the bargain i've got 3 one i've passed, one in transit and one at the kidney wall. spent the whole weekend being injected with morphine and anti sickness drugs. worst weekend of my life so far

Good luck with them either way.
"A man of little significance"
Had one a few years back. The pain was unbelievable. I ended up having a camera/grabber up my pet hedgehogs nose 3 times. First time I think the surgeon must of used an old BBC camera to have a look. I was butchered and trying to go for a piddle was unbearable. Best part was they didn't get it. 2nd time I was not in as much pain but they missed it again. 3rd time I went to a specialist in Brum and he finally got it. Had to have a stent in for a year while all this went on which rubbed my insides all the time.
Had a burst appendix about a year ago. That was bad also but I think the kidney stone pipped it in terms of pain.
Ive heard Some women who have had them say it's worse than giving birth!
Hmmmm. Having read this thread I’m starting to think the dull ache in my left side / back area might not be a gym-induced muscle strain, but might be a kidney stone.
Because of this forum I have a few too many watches, far too many brogues, and have now convinced myself I have the forum ailment. Marvellous.
I remember being told (or my dad was told ..i was listening) that barley water would be the best thing to drink for kidney stones , is it a build up of lime in the waterworks which causes them ?
This all sounds horrific. How do I not get one?

Drink water (and I reckon hoppy beer, but not that horrible American Citra stuff), keep urine nice and clear and avoid the following unfortunately long list.
beetroot
asparagus
rhubarb
chocolate
berries
leeks
parsley
celery
almonds, peanuts and cashew nuts
soy products
grains, such as oatmeal, wheat germ and wholewheat
I’ve had two and follow the advice for about six months after and then lapse. Keep up the advice as the pain is hell, sink to the knees, uncontrollable vomiting, crying out for morphine.
